For months a plume of mud has been pouring out of the earth, consuming everything in its path. Is this phenomenon a natural disaster or is it a man-made error? It has resulted in many losing their homes and their land.
Although the volcano has been considered an act of nature, experts believe it has been caused by Indonesian energy giants Lapindo Brantas. The company are quick to fight this claim, "It's not the truth - that's only again, their assumption". The real concern though, should lie with the people whose lives have been turned upside down, "Ever since the mud, we can't sleep, we worry what will happen to our kids, their fate".

I was in Indonesia about a week after this happened. I took a taxi from Surabaya to Malang, and went on that road right past the site. The highway was covered in mud, and hundreds of people were milling about, watching the mud flow. The site was like a moving mountain, which was like an undulating wave, that every few seconds threw mud into the sky. Never seen anything like it, before or since. Such a shame. So many people devastated.

this is a true sad injustice story inside the country, when government say it was a natural disaster it just a big lies to cover and make bargain from a mistake and greed of one of the political party figure in the country which also one big business man. and to some post here say bad word about one religion just remember that this accident is got nothing to do with religion or etc is just plain stupidity and greed of a man and corrupt government act that harm multi ethnic an religion belief in the area.

Psychological studies show that Corporations have a Psychopath's mental profile. Curiously enough, people working as CEOs and Directors of corporations also suffer from some type of psychopathy and this seems to be better for business as no empathy or compassion get in the way of making money.

They won't realize their own mistake, and it's also a complex issue, government, company, political are undoubtedly having the responsibility of this behavior, it isn't natural disaster but it's human error disaster

Reminds me of when i lived in the Philippines(under Marcos)if you had $$ you were ALWAYS cleared of anything that DIDN'T "go right"....building falls down during earthquake because of crappy building material used during construction and your a "donor" to President, not a problem...it was the people that lived there...they didn't take care of the place... they are the reason the walls fell down and the floors collapsed!

Drilling caused this disaster not an earthquake hundreds of miles away....

That mud is perfect for building roads, dams, bridges, island extension to create airstrips, also creating jobs to the locals but the government need to act quickly, but the question remains..how safe is that area, its a gas land & its on a fault line, for some small countries, they would love that thing coz it creates more land for them..

Natural gas, methane is odorless, the smell is added to the natural gas so as to detect leaks.

This video uploaded 3 years ago... What happened to the people from that area?. No one can put 100% blame to PT Lapindo. However, someone from the geological and geotech must have known something as significant as high pressure mudzones. Unless it came later due to some earthquake in the area. Is there any near surface and areal heat mapping and pressure analysis being done on continuous basis just to see something developing underneath.

i live 10 minutes from the site(not the erupting site) lemme tell u, when it rained oh goddamn it smells like a sulfurs, my friend live a minute away from the site and she got a well for water for washing clothes and dishes, and it is soo salty. my uncle and aunt lost their newly purchased house here too and i lost mygrandpa's younger brother from lung cancer in 2008 bcs of this. my aunt and uncle were finally compensated in 2016. edit: they also built a new gas mine in my village, just 2 minutes away from my house and i can actually see the mining site from my back porch across the rice fields. they also tried to do a gas mine explorations in my neighboring village and they did it anyway, it has caused the ground in that village to subside and sinking deeper bcs of it and now it's always flooded all the time when it rained and it stayed flooded for weeks and they would have to renovate their house every year to rise their house higher, but it's gonna be always sinking more and more.

This was caused by the gas bore hole. But until the earthquake there was nothing wrong , No mistakes were made by the drilling co. everything was normal. Who could have predicted this would happen ? If people want to asses blame , they must first prove negligence.

What will happen to the area that that mud use to be in. Are there now caves/caverns underground that could collapse since it would be unstable from so much water and gas pushing out the mud

Fun facts : 1. There was an earthquake hundreds kilometers away from the drilling site, several days before the mud erruption. 2. That's why government official decides it's a natural disasters. Wether the two event scientifically correlated or not. 3. When the government decide to pay compensation aid for the victim, some assholes came out of nowhere and took advantage from the situation. Acting as a mudflow victim, receive the aid and leave. If you have another fact about the incident, please write down below. If you want to correct my fact, don't be hesitated. I live at Sidoarjo. The regency where this mudflow happen. But far enough to be unaffected yet from the day one till now.

Are you still doing ok? The earthquake. Old have loosened the gas from the area it was in and then compounded with the drilling causing this mess.

Why should anyone be punished? Who could foresee this? Before punishing someone it must be established that people either did things maliciously or negligently. I see none of that.
