My plan is to put an N/A 20B into an FC whenever i find a good chassis. N/A is pure engine sound!! Not saying turbo sound isn't good, they both have their own very different appeal.
OMG! That car has so much personality! A 1:20 off the bat??? You guys built the Mullet for a year and couldn't get close to 1:20! Dave, do you miss your Rx-8 yet? Awesome video you guys. Love the rotaries!
I miss the RX8 a ton, actually. Such a great chassis. This engine in my RX8 would have been magic. And emissions illegal in the most extreme way possible LOL
and weighs almost a thousand pounds more than this car. Plus we really needed to go to a wider tire to get the most out of the Mullet. It has a 1:20 flat in it with a bit more setup work, if we wanted to chase that time.
it really sounds like a gp 2 strokes motorbike!!!!what kind of cost for this engine upgrade ( without labout cost ) roughly, because i may sell my toyota mrs for a 1991 mazda rx7 fc 13b
slusbe that thing would be a blast to drive on the streets with 275 whp even if it weighed as much as 2700-2800 lbs. I'd really like to know what kind of torque it's putting down though. I imagine it's not all that much with the turbos to help out.
2009-2011 RX-8's came with a 4.77LSD (tochigi fuji style, I think) rear diff. It SHOULD be a direct bolt in, but, don't quote me on that. That's probably the easiest thing to acquire for his setup that will make the changes you/he want to make.
Nice video, cool dude and cool car! :D Would love to see you Guys do a rotary project car, especially something other than the very expensive FD, maybe an FC or RX8. I see a lot of people wanting to build RX7s but doubting their abilities or the cost. I recently purchased my first RX7 and I'm half way through a turbo drive train swap. So far the rotary engine and swap have been much easier to work on that I thought, and a lot of fun! Maybe Speed Academy could help the newbie rotary Guys out and educate some of the uninformed haters.
You don't have the time to be fucken frugal with racing cars this isn't an investment at all. Don't talk to me like I don't know rotaries boy it's expensive to someone who doesn't know or work on a car period.
literally the cost per run is for a race car is high and is not the same as talking about a regular daily driver.... building a 13b with run of the mill materials you don't have 5k ? I can easily put up a cosmo swap here in FL.
And it won't be a C block, wont be rebuilt which it will definitely need but it will have the 3 rotor parts hunting headaches that a built 13b doesn't have. 3 rotor is the dream, but it's by no means a cheap bolt in. There's a reason race prepped N/A C blocks go for 12-14k
RX7 transmission is a bit of a problem for even turbo guys I think. If sticking with a 300crank or so, I know some RX8 guys swapped in the S2000 transmission for reliability reasons actually. I don't know the gear differences, just remembered it being a thing for RX8s.
Cool build but if we’re talking “best for track” I would prefer a k20 swapped mr2. Primarily because the k20 is far less “finicky” as he put it. You can easily achieve 300whp out of a k20 and whole setup would weigh roughly the same as this car. Cool car nonetheless.
Needs more rear gear because it makes NO torque. Fd's come with 4.10's I believe...and fairly tight gear ratios, and that was when the car made 275 ft lbs of turbo torque.
Never really been a huge rotary fan, mainly because some diehard fans act like complete Muppets when they see a V8 swap RX but this one sounds amazing!
there s nothing worst to hear a ricer unsuccsesful youtuber talk shit of your car like he was a pro driver.... only succesfull racing drivers are F1 drivers.
run the headers as dual primaries to the diff. run a resonator just before and a 3 inch over/under diff normal to miss 3rd, its a notorious problem in rotors 5:11 diff gears
lmao, this video felt soooooo good. I need to build another one. While watching I was talking out loud to myself at how long the gearing was and it must have a 4.33 in it still, a 4.44, or better yet a 4.88/5.12 would be amazing with all those revs. It also looked super stable on turn in. This is making me think horrible/great things again.
Ya might even have a 4.10 in it. We are hunting for a 5.12, but it's a unicorn piece. Also considering OS Giken or Quaife close ratio gear sets. We'll definitely shoot another update once Gabe's made some updates. It's a super fun car to rip.
