This is my very first video and motorcycle review, so thank you for any support - advice, subscribe, likes and comments. Also - let me know which model is your favourite and why.
I reviewed the new Triumph Street Scrambler and compared it to beloved previous air-cooled model of Triumph Scrambler which was just an amazing motorcycle. I did 37 000 km on the old model within 2 years so there is something to compare
*** Thanks ***
I appreciate my friend Ondrej Vymetalik who rents motorcycles here in Gran Canaria www.canaryride.com and helps me to do my video tests. Thank you!
Also, let me thank you official Triumph dealership GUBRA here at Las Palmas. They are awesome!

The video was shot at Gran Canaria in the beggining of January 2018. I used Sony A7, GoPro Hero4 and iPhone SE. Microphones RODE Smartlav+ and RODE VideoMicro. Software Final Cut Pro 10.4.

Excellent video. For me, the older Scrambler looked way cooler sitting next to the newer version......but that's simply down to the paint colour, seat and exhaust.

Is the new Triumph Street Scrambler better than the previous model? Yes, in every category possible. Weight and seat height (I’m a 5ft7in 120lbs girl), engine (a lot more torque, basically the same power), sound (a lot more bass in it), comfort (water-cooled, doesn’t overheat), quality of components (both metal and plastic), suspension (a lot more progressive, and with the possibility of fitting the amazing Fox shocks from factory), customizability... It’s a home run. Oh, I had a 2011 model and I now own this one so, yes, I know what I’m talking about.

Boy does that remind me of my 1982 Triumph Tiger Trail with a custom built set of up swept pipes just like those on that red bike. Tickle single Amal carb, kick over, started 1st start every time. Also fitted a breadbox tank to eliminate range anxiety.

I have the 2009 triumph scrambler and I love it. One sad thing though its not made in Hinkley, I think all the Bonneville's are made in Thailand which is a shame as I thought I was buying a British built bike and didn't find that out myself until after I brought it. Still love it though and I won't ever part with it.

They are making a 1200cc now. That should be a bike to get, if you want to go faster. They also make sport bikes if you want a bike for speed, and racing. But i prefer a bike that is made a little better for going off road as well going street riding. These bikes was made to look so much like the old school bikes. Beautiful.

I respect everything you say in this review but you keep mentioning lack of power and it’s exactly the opposite. Everyone else seems to agree that it feels more powerful than the old one, much of it due to higher torque. It’s funny because 4hp less it’s nothing compared to 20% more torque. I’m not trying to dismiss you or anything but much of it has to do maybe to the bike being new (after 3-4000km the bike changes drastically in terms of letting that power out) and you not being totally comfortable riding it hard. I agree on the “ground clearance” part and wish they put longer forks, but these are mods we can do afterwards if really necessary. As it is right now, I have enjoyed 15000km on mine and it’s a blast of a bike. I rode it hard enough to know its limitations and after testing the T120 and Bobber, I can honestly say I don’t miss a 1200cc engine on my Street Scrambler, nor the extra weight, nor the extra fuel consumption.

If you have ever ridden a 750 Moto Guzzi, you will know what he means. They are both acceptable in the first 3 gears. After you get in higher gears at higher rpm, you get the feeling that there is a feeling of lethargy, like you are at a high altitude and the bike is starving for air and not getting any power.

Great video and points, TEC Bike parts make a cam for the bike which increases horsepower by 20-30 or so, they have a youtube video on it and the cam they put from factory restrict the bike a lot.

I think George from Tec is on the right track with this. Triumph spent a ton of money developing an all new engine architecture, and essentially only have two different displacements available to them. They have to differentiate somehow between cost tiers, and the Scrambler is supposed to be below the T120 and Thruxton and be "off-road capable" which means they get the small camshaft. I think from any other manufacturer it'd be a 700-800cc bike or something. So it'd be nice if they upped the power from the previous generation. We both know they could have. But they were trying to distinguish all the models from each other using only two engines.
@biker1581
@biker1581 6 лет назад
That could be the case though I am not sure if it's a smart business move, 650-900 cc is a fastest growing segment across all types be it street, sports, adventure, urban, they shouldn't hold back power potential of this 900 parallel twin, this is why many prefer ducati scrambler that makes about 70-72 horses. I'd still go with triumph's but will have to spend some money on exhaust and air intake to up the power by 10%.

The air/oil cooler is easier to mod in oeder to get more HP out of it. There is no place in the head of the liquid cooler for bigger valves. With a different cam grind, a 904/995/1200 kit installed you can achieve 105-115 rwhp out of the 865. There is no way you could do that with the new 900.
@JFMotorcycles
@JFMotorcycles 6 лет назад

I'm 1.86 so very close to you and am very comfortable on my Thruxton R. Of course it does feel like a small bike to people like us but to me that just reinforces the feeling of it being a very nimble bike. I have also lowered the bars which somehow feels more natural to me and makes me feel like I'm riding on the back of a flying wasp. I've owned a 2001 Bonneville and a 2014 Thruxton before and the R just is a completely different category altogether, I just can't praise it enough. Plus I can't think of a sexier bike to look at but that's obviously very suggestive. Cheers!

Both bikes to which you refer are street bikes that have a small capability in dirt. 20% dirt / 80% street. Most 700cc motorcycles are faster, quicker, stop more quickly, and are less expensive. Those other motorcycles however, are not as good for everyday riding in urban areas. The sound and the quality of your video was very good. 👍

TEC Bike Parts is producing a new cam for $ 500 that will produce 72 HP and does not reduce the torque. Should be coming out in the next couple of months. The HP and Torque increase through the power band all the way to the rev limiter. Not as the stock flattens out at 4000 rpm.
@bill_4359
@bill_4359 6 лет назад
On the 900 cc engine you will also have to decat the engine and add an X-Pipe and a High Flow air intake filter to get the most out of that engine. I own a 2017 Triumph Street Cup with the 900 engine. I will be modifing my bike with all of the above mentioned parts. I also have a 2008 H-D Dyna Low Rider which I have installed a Stage 1 kit , Vance & Hines Air Intake, and Vance & Hines Straight Shot exhausts (Decat ) with quiet baffles. I lose some top end speed but pick up some low revs torque with that setup ( The Baffles ). Haha, 100 mph on my Harley is fast enough for me !
@martinhesketh4916
@martinhesketh4916 6 лет назад
Yep, and with the Vance & Hines exhaust, V & H fuel map and H pipe in place of the cat the bike should fly!
@chrisredfield3240
@chrisredfield3240 6 лет назад
It may make more peak torque but the torque will be reduced in the lower rev range. Also hp will be reduced in the lower rpm range. It's more re tuned than de tuned.
@justinwaller7339

So, it seems to me, if I wanted to get an improvement over my 2006 Triumph Scrambler and I still wanted it to be a Triumph modern classic, maybe it would be best to buy a 1200 cc Bonneville, put better, longer suspension on the back, high pipes, a skid plate, off-road pegs, and maybe a headlight grill or something. I sat on a new Street-Scrambler and wasn't too happy with the dimensions of the new bike. Overall, it just feels too small. I already thought the old air-cooled model was small enough and wouldn't want its replacement to be any smaller. Also, the new Street-Scrambler just looks too much like what it is, a factory built model made specifically for its purpose. I prefer to take something and then modify it for what I use it for. Something about the previous model seems to make it better for customization. At least to me. So, I won't be buying the Street-Scrambler. If and when it finally dies, maybe I'll buy a 1200 cc Bonneville and Scrambler-ize it. If I wanted an air-cooled bike to Scrambler-ize, and wanted that classic British style, maybe one of the new 650 Royal Enfields.

You spent some time complaining about the Street Scrambler's apparent lack of top end power, when really revved, and that it wasn't much good at “racing”...err, it's not a racer! So, that's pretty much missing the point of this bike completely, isn't it?! If someone wants to go racing, or rev a bike highly, to get the maximum power out of it, they wouldn't buy this style of bike in the first place...they'd buy a bike which is actually designed to go fast, or to race. Racing/high revving is not what this bike is about, so I don't understand why you seem disappointed that it doesn't do that very well. Saying that a bike like the Street Scrambler isn't much good at racing, is like saying that a Ducati Panigale isn't much good at touring! A bike should only be tested in the areas and style of riding it was designed to be capable of. And from every one of the many reviews I've seen of this bike, it seems as though it's excellent at what it was meant to do! Unless, of course, all the dozens of other reviewers were wrong, and you're right....
