Newburg has always had a rough rep. Okolona used to be a nice middle class suburb but it’s gotten a bit rougher within the past decade.

I grew up in Okolona, my great grandparents had a home built in the 50's and lived there until their deaths in the early 2000's, use to run all over that neighborhood with friends and went to Southern High School. Moved away in 2012 for good, my dad still lives there but it's sad to see what that area has become compared to how it was 20 or 25 years ago.

I did as well. I grew up in the Silver Heights suburb near Blue Lick elementary and T.T. Knight middle (attended both, but went to Fairdale for high school) from 1975 to 1993. I have sooo many memories from that area, it was such a great place to live in those years. I don't think I saw a police car in my neighborhood the entire time I was growing up. Jefferson Mall was bustling back then and had awesome water decorations with fountains and falls running throughout the main corridor. I've gotten home sick before and driven through my old neighborhood and it just doesn't have the same vibe anymore. Very sad indeed to see Okolona become a shell of it's former self.

I am from Louisville, KY and I lived in the Fern Creek area. People didn't leave Edgewood because of crime. People were forced out because of the constant Airport expansion. I grew up around the airport and my mom was forced to sell her home in 1989 when they expanded the airport then. I am still peeved that they renamed my former high school to Male. It was DURRETT when I went there in the 70s. That furniture store you are referring to at Jefferson Mall may have been the old Sears.

Grew up in Okolona from the early 90's until 2009 going to St. Rita's then Southern High School and living on Miles Lane. Back then Okolona was sort of split in to two different classes of neighborhoods with Outer Loop being the boundary. North of Outer Loop was like your describing but the Southside of Okolona was mostly full of blue-collar middle-cass people with the majority of them working at Ford, GE, Waste Management, or UPS. And most took care of their properties and respected others because it was bought with hard earned money. It was a great place to grow up and it's so disappointing to see it this way now. It's just another example of the middle-class slowly dying in this country

Drug addiction and homelessness are definitely on the rise in the westand the south end which includes newburg and tokalona but at the same time low interest rates on mortgages have property values at an all time high city wide. Also retail businesses are booming and almost all of them are hiring. Almost anyone can easily get a job at GE, UPS, Ford, MSD, and hundreds more, especially logistics companies offering CDL positions like XPO Logistics, DHL, R&L, Estes, and Thornton's are all hiring aggressively. I would love to see the city come up with some sort of drug rehab and job placement program as well as step up theory game when it comes to rehoming all of the stray pitbull type breed dogs in the shelters. Both are really sad situations that seem to go ignored by those that can do something about it. I rep PRP and my neighborhood is full of both. Also plenty of honest hard working folks so let's stick together and turn it around yall!!

Okolona a few years back was considered a nice blue-collar middle-class area of town. In recent years it has become an area where immigrants mainly Hispanics have settled. It has gained the nickname "Little Mexico" which is well deserved if you visit the area you will see there are many businesses that cater soley to them.

I grew up in Edgewood. Seeing it emptied out like this breaks my heart. My old home is still there, it's the first block after the ditch where they cut off the buy out. But a huge chunk of my first childhood neighborhood is gone. It's so sad. But there's lots of ppl who think those that lives there suffered all sorts of ailments bc of the airplanes constantly flying overhead so maybe it's for the best. Idk. 🤷🏽‍♀️🥺 After that I moved to okolona, which was a move up back in the 90's... Okolona is in bad shape now compared to what it was when I grew up there. From age 7 til I was grown I lived off of Blue Lick. It was a decent area over there and Treasure Island was too. Some areas still are, but a lot of them have gone way downhill. They have put wayyyyy too many shopping centers and built housing in every grassy knoll they could find so now it's much MUCH more densely populated and has much more traffic and isn't the quietish suburbs with fields and wooded areas dotted around like it used to be. Now there's not an unclaimed space anywhere 🤣

I ran around the Treasure Island/Silver Heights neighborhoods from 1975-1993. Couldn't have asked for a better place to grow up.

When you were at Bashford Manor Ln and Bardstown Rd, you should have crossed the street instead of turned. The house in front when the road splits is a historic landmark. Bashford Manor Inn was built in 1874 and was the location of a famous(at the time) horse farm. 4 horses from that farm won the Kentucky derby. The stores and strip mall you passed on Bashford Manor Ln were part of the farm land.

The fire at Appliance Park 6 was visible in the Fern Creek neighborhood - I saw photos from The Park at Hurstbourne apartments (near the intersection of Hurstbourne and Bardstown) where the flames from Appliance Park could be seen.

Edgewood is going to become a ups employee parking lot. They have plans to extend the runway into the current parking lot. They have a small parking lot there now and shuttle employees over to the facility.

I lived in Lousiville in the early to Mid 70s. Very different now than back then. I had a girlfriend in Fern Creek. I lived in the Jeffersontown are then in the Westportares until my dad's company moved him to Miami, Florida.

I was robbed by gunpoint by two people right on the sidewalk in front of the Bridal store at 32:35 early morning going to work prob around 2018. But mostly grew up around Newburgh and had more chill times out there than Outer Loop as crazy as that sounds.

Sears used to be an anchor in Jefferson Mall. Part of the space is now Round 1 Bowling.

A friend of mine who trains horses remted a condo in Newburg for 25 yrs - last yr he decided to stay in Arkansas - why? Brcause the area has gone to hell and its not going to get better - and hes not alone- Its sad that good people are leaving because of the bullshit

I use to live in Edgewood in the 80s and the 90s that place was Cursed With a lot of crime and Suicides. A lot of people that live there was criminal minded And the kids follow the footsteps. The guy that played the clown on Hayloft hoedown and he Appeared on hee haw lived there . I think he suicide himself and killed his family... The big yellow mansion lighthouse that used to sit behind the old church People said that was a Old plantation kept slaves there .. Several local race car drivers lived in that neighborhood Most people knew each other there.. I remember back when I was a kid There was a police chase Right there at the corner of lotus And Darieng At that curb The police officer lost control of his car And flipped There was car pc everywhere And I think he broke his neck. There was a biker group That live back there I don't know what DLC there was in. There's a lot of history Just in that neighborhood just gotta do a lot of research.

People have to work but u went through a industrial park where they make a large amount of appliances for USA and the average pay was what ? Don’t think Alabama can match that low pay only plus maybe their kids can finish school and go on to better things that said all these companies are getting tax breaks so helping schools is probably a no and Detroit bulldozed and starting new nothing comes then maybe farming where going to need to feed the below minimum wage workers

On the corner of orchard and daring house where kk members lived they use to have flags hanging off of the house and I member when these two guys I know burn a cross in front of this black family home just cuz they moved in a all white Neighborhood They got agitated over that so they did that. Then on Norton ave there was a big march blacks on one side of the road and white ppl on the other. Lot of crazy stuff happen there when I was a kid too much to type lol
