Is the Past Real or Just a Concept?

A man wants to know is the past real or just a concept? He says he can clearly see that the future is only an idea, but what about the past? To what extent is the past real?
Rupert says we can only find out by exploring our experience. We actually have to go there, touch the past, hold it in our hands and investigate it. Can you actually go there?
I'm not suggesting there isn't some reality to time or the past or memory. There is something real about our experience of time, and that is the eternal now. But our mind imposes its own limitations on that reality and makes it appear in a way that is consistent with that.
So, we cannot think about this satisfactorily. You just cannot see white snow through orange tinted glasses. We just cannot perceive the nature of reality through the limitations of a finite mind.

This is quite profound. All Memories are imperfect. So those concepts are unreliable. We don't really know what happened, which is why forgiving all is so important. Whatever resentment we hold is irremediably marred by imperfect or incomplete memories. Forgiveness is an act of love for self as much as others.

The past is very real. It is memory, memory stored in the brain. It is the memory that we use to greet life everyday. It is the thought that causes so much conflict in the world. Tath is real so therefore so to is the past.

"As long as you are looking through orange colored glasses you cannot fully conceive or understand..." intellectual discussions at some point become problematic to our understanding as it requires trying to understand with the orange glasses on (intellect). Ramana Maharshi's advise did not involve an intellectual discussion, rather he said "abide as awareness (SELF)" drop the mind. Ramana was simply saying take the glasses off as he understood that sooner or later or spontaneously the understanding which we seek will come as it can only come from the SELF (awareness)...so take the direct path, instead of letting the illusory mind explain it. Rupert does a good job of navigating with people's illusory mind and helping them see more clearly. I suspect most people after 2 days will get lost again in their minds (Ego) and start chattering intellectually and the intellect will say "oh I get it." In my experience, when I stopped seeking the orange colored glasses disappeared. The beauty of the direct path is that one does not have to be an intellectual, simply aware of being aware.

So clear. Thank you again, Rupert. Thank you, also, George, for your participation in this wonderful conversation. 🙏🏻 I hope you won't mind if I offer that our chief misunderstanding is that we believe we 'exist' as a relatively long-lasting thing called a "person."

Not sure how familiar you're with Rupert's model of Reality. Not sure how closely you have examined this model of Reality and the way it's presented. This may sound harsh to some, but, nonetheless, allow me say few things here. Rupert's understandings of Reality are based on Self deception. It's another copy, a spinoff of the old religious ideology under a different label. I'm assuming your sincere aim is to further understand Reality or Existence as IT IS in ITSELF. Rupert has repeatedly claimed time after time, that, ALL activities are activities of none other than Consciousness and Consciousness alone. But, when it comes to sufferings, he completely denies by claiming that Consciousness is not the one causing any suffering. So he creates something called " finite mind, separate self, beliefs in separate self...etc, that get all the blames. This is not only dishonesty, but it's a form of Self deception. This comes from the old religious ideology of God and the Devil story. By defining God as All good and All loving, and as a result of this ,all the bad and the ugly had to go to something else other than God, thus the creation and belief in the illusory entity called the Devil. It's a form of Self deception. Consciousness deceiving Itself by splitting its own Psyche. What this old religious ideology has really done in its Self deceiving blind ignorance was denying God as being the totality of all experience. Rupert defining Consciousness as All peace and All happiness meets the same fate. He also claimed that Consciousness is not the one causing sufferings in life, but, rather, it's the finite mind, separate self, or the belief in separate self to which all blames go to. Blame the costume but not the man. Blame the automobile, but, not the manufacturer. It's Consciousness deceiving Itself. These are all forms of Self deception to create, maintain and perpetuate illusory existence rather than understanding what Existence Is in Itself. No model of Reality is perfect, but, once a model of Reality gets rooted in dishonesty and Self deception, everything that follows is bound to leave a trail of confusion and dishonesty, becoming its own trap. I just heard many have died a horrible death from an earthquake. All performed and carried out by none other than Consciousness and Consciousness alone, Not the Devil, Not the finite mind, Not the ego, not the belief in separate self. All praises and All blames can only belong to Consciousness and Consciousness alone. None Other. Countless life forms are being eaten alive at this moment, some barely days old, screaming in pain from the top of their lungs to no avail, All performed and directed by none other than Consciousness and Consciousness alone. Creating, maintaining and perpetuating form of Self deception cannot and will not do any genuine service in the Psyche of Consciousness but only add more insults to the sufferings. We can never be too careful when it concerns the Absolute True Nature of ourselves ,not just for our own sakes, but, also for the sakes of all life forms and beyond .

So does it mean that you have to go to the Sun and hold it in your hands to know it is real ? It is only because you cannot go to the past, that it is called the past. We do not need to subject everything to the scrutiny of experience to know that it is real. Experience (pratyaksha) is one of the several different means of proof. There are several other means of proof, inference being one of them. I need not hold the hand of my long dead grandfather and experience his touch today to know that he once existed in the past. The fact that I am here is good enought to prove that my grandfather existed and that I cannot experience the touch of his hand today is proof that he existed in the past only. The past is as real as is the present and we should not have any problems in accepting that.

Interestingly, what is conceived to be a continuum of time is, in actual experience, absolute non-duration. This is evident in the fact that the instant any experiential configuration shows up it is already gone, it simply never holds still or sticks around. Noticing this to be the case is the discovery that time never existed, it was only ever a misinterpretation.

I think one important question is how does the past affect or determine our present experience. I think it does in a way. Yesterday does determine today in many ways.
@jameschesterton
@jameschesterton Год назад
The past doesn't determine the present, the past trails out of the present like the wake of a ship. In other words, the present creates the past. The cause and effect of history on the present moment is largely interpretation eg. what was the cause of the 911 attacks? the birth of Osama Bin Laden, the invention of the aeroplane, the dawn of man etc...But it is all conceptual, the past cannot influence the future because all that exists is the present moment. Memory and imagination are the tools the brain uses to create a sense of time.

No one has ever seen or experienced the past...it is just a mental concept. In fact, we often don't remember things the way they actually happened...and so people have disagreements about what happened and why. All we have are a bunch of mental concepts and memories (more mental concepts). A map to represent what actually happened...but the map is not reality. A map is but a conceptualized version of what was.

I fully agree with Rupert this time, I wouldn't call it a limitation though: I believe the mechanics of time are true, but they don't work in the way we suppose in a Newtonian way of a timeline. I have D.I.D from extreme ongoing trauma, and when new parts/alters show up, it's like they were flash frozen in the time they were experiencing the trauma. Time did not move on for them. They still believe they are "back there", still living it. The memories they hold need to be relived and received with all the feelings to the whole D.I.D system, only then do they get caught up to the present day and understand that it is really OVER. I, as one of the main front parts of the system, have literally gone back in time, merged with another part that held the experience in our inner world and during a "relive' through nightmares, daymares and flashbacks, relived it as if is was happening now. The smells, tastes, sensations, appear as they were then, even ligature marks will appear on the body. It's like overlapping timelines and it is quite bizarre and has taken some getting used to. Of course, all of this is NOW.

This is the fallacy of presentism, couched in spiritualistic poetry. Past always has an overbearing influence on our present, and only this recognition (either spontaneous or gradual) of ourselves in the past can enable us to realize the possibility of something radically new in the present. And it is necessary to understand how experientiality and knowledge are distinct, in order to get a sense of the reality of time. Rupert here foregrounds experientiality as the core of human being, and leaves our propensity to extract facts from this experience, to the background. The facticity of time and its complex order is the ground from which our experience of the "eternal-now" is derived. Also, finitude of the mind does not impose restrictions on how we have come to understand real and enduring structures in the universe. So in principle, we should be able to say something about time beyond merely our experience and measurability of it.

I work with traumatised people who regularly experience the present as if they were in their past trauma and they feel and behave accordingly. I can understand that their experience happens in the present, like any experience does. But they are sure they experience the past because what they perceive brings them thoughts and images from the past and their body reacts like it did in the past, with the same emotions and sensations. This makes the past so real to them. No way they can understand that it's just a concept

That's because the past was real for them and they're having real memories in the present of a past that really existed. A memory isn't a concept; it's a recording or representation of something that really happened, hence the past was real and has shaped the present. This is absolutely true by all conscious experience and is A Properly Basic Belief. No one experiences times as not being a real continuum of change and cause and effect. To believe that is blind faith.

Right, let's unpack this. No one can go to the past because it's the past but that doesn't mean that there was no past. The past means that it's the past. If you could experience the past in the present then it wouldn't be the past. Yes the past, being the past, is impossible to experience in the present. How does not being able to experience being in the past while you're in the present prove there is no past? That he says that if someone can't go to the past proves there's not a past is ridiculous. There is no way to show there isn't a past. I switched off, so God knows what he's going to say about the future. Although I ought to know. The question was maybe "clear" but nevertheless quite "tricky". Firstly, the "past" cannot be any more or less "real" or "unreal" than the "now" is. Will we say tomorrow that what we experienced today (ie. the day before) was not real, but only a "concept" because we cannot physically "access it"? The "eternal now" is not starting every second by dismissing the second which has just passed as "unreal". It would not be "eternal". And if time is an illusion, then the separation of past and present must be too. Only then "eternal now" makes sense. Secondly, if all is a dream, and not even our dream, then what can be "real"? If we want to be consistent, reality in the strict sense does not seem to belong to the holographic realm of our shadowy existence. So the question, even though well intentioned, fails the tests of both the "eternal now" and the "nondualistic reality".

That we are always ever perceiving in the ever present, I understand. What I'm having trouble with is the past in this way: Let say there is a detective who is piecing together the sequence of a crime. As he discovers evidence, which, forensically, he can determine with great accuracy-- the time at which a given action transpired. So- yes, he can only decipher any point of attention in the present. But what is this past he is looking at? How do I hold this idea of a past? Could it be argued in court that a "proven" murder, for example, never happened? I think not. So, then what is this past? Did anything happen? And if not, what happened to the person who got murdered? Someone familiar with these ideas R. Spira speaks about please comment. On and on it goes. You walk upon the beach and come to a wrecked boat. Was there ever "that" boat when new? What if there are pictures of the boat makers and documents showing its construction, yet there it is-- broken upon the rocks. I don't know how to solve this riddle.

Does it make sense to say, “that happened”? Or “it did happen”. I think it’s okay to say that because that’s the way our language is, but does that actually match reality?

In the past I made a cup of tea. I remember doing it and which cup I used. The tea is currently on the table where I remember placing it. My investigation concluded that no, I didn't go there but yes, past me made a cup of tea. Of course you can't physically or literally travel into the past, but there is ample evidence that can support or refute your subjective memory/past experience. Ultimately, I'm not sure it matters.

Hi Holly, I agree that it doesn't really matter, but just for fun we can talk about this it's as good a reason as any other :-) So the way I see it, you are using the cup of tea as proof of a past. This seems to be irrefutable evidence. So now just see it as what it is without the names and knowing what it is. Images, sensations, perceptions etc. Take away the story and there is no evidence at all of a past. But a very convincing experience of one.

We are also animals and we live in a state of now. And animals have the same emotion as we have fear, hate, love, sadness, depression. It is no difference being a human or an animal regarding the feelings , they have too, a past and a future, but less future because of us.They have anxiety about the future but they do not have the power to do anything about that . I think the concept of future is extremely important for survival and it applies to all living creatures. I don't think anxiety and depression are something unique to human beings either, although Idk how much scientific experiments agree with this. A cat or a dog who has been taken to the vet before and has had some bad experiences in the past will remember it on some level. And being subjected to the same pattern of events (like being taken in a car to a place with distinct smells and so on) will trigger anxiety in them, because their body automatically generates a sense of impending doom. Why do birds migrate when they get a sense of forthcoming natural disasters or calamitous events? Past and future are absolutely essential sensibilities for life, and nature has somehow ingrained that information within us because it wants itself (in its living manifestation in the biosphere) to survive and endure the conditions that are constantly threatening its existence

The future isn't a concept. You can test this. Simply allow time to pass by and observe that what you're experiencing now is completely a new experience to a previous moment. This can be tested and repeated. We all experience it. It seem like the universe is created for there to be a future. Now this doesn't mean everything is predetermined, but rather there is a pre set future where things will inevitably happen. The specific thing that will happen depends on the choices we are making now. Look at the future like a blank piece of paper. The paper is there, but what you write on it is created as you go along; there is no predetermined picture, but the paper is predetermined. This process of change is a reality. The universe has been created to be a continual process of cause and effect. By nature it's created to move forward in a logical and ordered fashion. Claiming there is no time in any sense is just drivel.

That is still being immersed in the illusion that time flows. It doesn't in reality. Our actual, direct experience of "the future" is still always right now... yes it changes moment to moment because that is the "monkey mind" chattering away and various "objects of awareness" coming into our awareness... including concepts, thoughts, feelings, imaginings about "the future". But the "just awareness" doesn't change through time.

The only thing that doesn't change about the universe is that it's always changing. If you respond to my comment that creates a change where you have added dialog in this conversation and where I will have an opportunity to respond. This is just undeniable. Only belief and strange philosophy could cause one to think otherwise.

I mean at least I can say with confidence that the universe is undergoing a process of change and cause and effect, and I'm going to call that time. It is without a doubt A Properly Basic Belief, and unless you can prove otherwise I have absolutely no reason to doubt it. Thinking about the past doesn't require you to leave the present; it only requires you to think about the past in the present. I can know I'm in the present at the same time as thinking about the past. When thinking about the past I know I'm thinking about it in the present. This is basic common sense. There's nothing spiritual or profound about what Rupert is saying here. The reason you cannot go to the past is because it's passed; it's in the name. It still exists as an effect on the present though, because the present has been shaped and molded by what came before. If I brake my arm and wake up the next day with a plaster on that's because the past was real and lead to the present reality.

I've just only recently got a deeper understanding of time. I think what would have been really helpful here is to point out that all possible reality exists (now). If there is anything that will exist that doesn't exist now that means that God is less than all there is. Future God would be more than earlier God. Given the truth that all possible reality exists now we begin to get an understanding of how the past and future are just a perspective. It seems to be the future. It seems to be the past. What really took me to a greater understanding and what I think gets people stuck is the idea of continuity. "I broke my arm yesterday and now I have a cast today. Clearly the past exists." This false thinking can be clearly seen through when we realize that each slice of reality, each moment in time is a whole, complete universe in itself. Each slice of reality already exists because God is all that is or ever could be. It is our minds that create the illusion of continuity. We project/manifest a specific reality moment to moment. It is our mind that is changing our perception creating the sense of time. Reality itself is never changing. When we follow a thread of reality is the thread that our mind chose to follow. This is how and why we have what is perceived as free will. We can see a different set of slices of reality if we set our perception on those different slices of reality. (This is also why not invalidating any reality is important when trying to manifest a preferred reality. What we resist persists and you're not actually creating a new reality. You are just perceiving a new set of slices of reality.)

Yes, the past was real at some point and it was present. Right now the past is just memory, if you erase your memory there is no past . Why is there no past or future? Because then we could leave the present and live in the past or the future. it is not possible because the two do not exist . We can predict the future but not experience it. You will say nonsense, of course I can experience the future. An example: you hear on the radio that it will rain tomorrow. and you say tomorrow i will experience rain . And so will you, but when you experience the rain it is no longer the future but the present

We are the programmer living inside a program. Our 5 sense reality acts as filtering system to interpret reality. There is no time and space consequently there is only the NOW. Next time a bad memory pops up in the mind, be the observer watching the thought like a movie goer watching a movie, do not engage as an actor or a participant in the movie. You are a programmer, raise the awareness that you are watching the program unfold and not let the program run you! That’s the key to liberation from suffering.

Yes your experience is reality going through the 5 senses and being filtered into the brain into conscious experience, but there's know reason to believe it's not interpreting a real process of change and cause and effect. If one believes everything is only in the mind then one has to argue that no one and nothing objective is real and that they're just having a conscious dream. They could even reason they're the only reality and only consciousness, and therefore they are the absolute reality, LOL!
