The Peugeot 205 GTI is arguably just as iconic as Volkswagen's Golf GTI. This pocket rocket offered attainable performance to the masses, and was so good that it's still referred to as a benchmark today. Class leaders such as the Ford Fiesta ST and Mini Cooper could learn something from this hot hatchback.
This example features the Mi16 1.9-litre engine from a Peugeot 405, meaning that it produces 160bhp. There have also been light modifications to the suspension and a quick-shifter fitted. This car sold for around £25,000 a few years ago, but is it worth the cash?

It probably is, it did everything right, yes they were tin cans, the paint was thicker than the metal used, but as a hot hatch it is an all time great. I did prefer its bigger brother (or ugly sister) the 309 GTi more as it was a better balanced car, shame there are so few of those left now :(

2nd Gen American PT Cruiser GT with the factory custom Mahle pistons and Getrag gearbox. If you added a cheap cold airbox it got to 60mph in well under 6 seconds, and was a blast to drive.

205GTI for sure, drove a Mitsubishi Evo it was boring as feck compared to the GTI, you couldn't help but smile driving this pug !.

Back in 1990 i bought a 6 month old Black Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI (G600SVL) kept it for over 3 years, the longest iv`e ever kept a car! BRILLIANT is the only way to describe how this totally standard car drove, Fast as f** with loads of torque, and other than routine servicing, plus the odd rattles! totally reliable .... The only modern car iv`e driven that closely matches it`s raw charm is the Abarth 595 which fortunately also has safety features built in...

Yeah of course I remember this legend my brother use to own one but he crash it due to over-speeding and it was hard to take, a lovely white GTI. I think it worth it because it still look better than most recent hatchbacks

Had a 1.6 in the early nineties. I still haven't driven anything that felt so special and so different from the standard car, which I previously owned. It's still my favourite car I've owned and wish I hadn't sold it in 1996.

Daily drove one for years. Great car. Mine had taller gearing than standard though (100mph @ 4,000rpm) which made it a lot more live-able on the motorway

I would love to have one in the states, it looks incredible. I wish we could still have cars designed like this today, I'm not feeling the look of the current hatchbacks in the market

The question doesn’t work. Is a 205GTI worth £35k? In answer, I’ll test a car that isn’t a 205GTI and discuss how a 405 engine feels, and a none standard short shifter.... strange

No, it’s a great car, my second ever car was a 205 GTi, even with the nostalgia there’s no way it’s worth £35k. Great video BTW.

A quick autotrader search brings up £18995 as the most expensive 205 GTI. Not sure I’d even fork out that much for one tbh.

The £35k price tag is super low mileage examples, very original, and usually sold at auction or by specialists.

Let’s be honest, 8k will get you a very decent 205 GTi with lower mileage mint ones 10k and above

Shame you did not drive original car rather than modified car...certainly a car with different engine, bonnet, rather odd looking interior does not look like 1.9 GTI trim other than seats is not worth £10k but something for example at 4star classics that’s absolutely original with low miles full history maybe a different story ...

I don't think this is the car you should be testing as it isn't the car that started the legend, I own a 205 and I remember driving GTI's when new. They are lovely cars but £35K is too much. It's too enhanced for a realistic comparison, that said it is still a lovely thing.

Hi there, 1.9 GTI owner here. 🙋🏼‍♂️ Question asked: Is the Peugeot 205 GTI worth £35k? The answer? Absolutely fucking not. This is an amazing car no doubt and is so fun on the country lanes, but it’s £6k worth of fun, not £35k. The prices these days are just getting RIDICULOUS, and to think the prices are entering sports & luxury car territory is, quite frankly, insulting to those superior cars. The Classic Hot Hatch genre as a whole is getting far too big for it’s boots nowadays, prices are just STUPID for what they are. Emperor’s new clothes.

But that’s not really a 205 GTI is it? It’s too heavily modified. So hard to draw any conclusions from that particular example.

I personally think the mi16 engine was wasted on the 205. A 405 had a far better chassis and was only 1080kg

Asking price and selling for arent the same thing.....if you can hold out for an idiot like the dude who bought the E30 M3 evo for 250k then sweet but id say 15k as of now imo
