Is the Pint’s Range Enough for Group Rides?

Is the Onewheel Pint Good Enough for Group Rides? Do you need a Onewheel XR instead? Is range anxiety an issue? Do you need to go with a VNR or extended battery? Can you keep up with the faster Onewheel XR on the Pint?
The DMV Onewheel Riders love a good group ride, and most of the people in the local crew ride a Onewheel+ XR. But can you also enjoy the ride if you own a Onewheel Pint? Will you have enough range? Will you get left behind? Will the group have to wait for you to charge? Can you even keep up?
I interviewed two of the DMV crew's best Pint riders and asked them to defend their decision to buy a Onewheel Pint instead of an XR. If you ask them Pint or XR, they are clearly in favor of buying the Onewheel Pint. But why? And do you need an external battery or a VNR (vamp and ride) set up?
Khalil sports a Sonny Wheels VNR solution on his Pint, Frankenstein. Pearl Sun uses a VNR that connects to a battery in her backpack. I prefer to cruise in with a stock XR.
At the end of the day, whatever you choose, I'd heavily consider buying a fast charger like the Future Motion HyperCharger for the XR or the UltraCharger for the Pint. Better to spend your time riding than to spend it charging!
The footage in this video spans DC, Maryland, and Virginia. We did the Trifecta Group Ride and the Celebratory Group Ride for Javier Starks, aka OneWheelWing, who exceeded the 23,000 mile milestone on his Onewheel XR. He is still the undisputed mileage champion!

My VnR Pint peeps know what's up. I'm 230 and get 22 on my 5ah VnR. That, footpad, fender, sliders, and other stuff were well under the cost of an XR. Top speed of 25.4 mph to boot. Both great boards, but I'm all about that Pint life.

I believe it depends on the group ride. I've met guys that have a minimum requirement of an XR and range extender for the kind of trails that they like to hit. Again, awesome content Don. 👍

I agree that it definitely depends on the ride, but I'd hope a stock XR is enough for the majority of rides. I guess you could always leave early too 🤷🏾‍♂️

Very well done. You're a great creator. 🙏 By the way, it's worth noting that Future Motion will likely deny any service on a board they find has a battery modification done to it. They deem them unsafe and often will blacklist the serial number. So it's worth being aware that any extended range modification will eliminate the option of sending the board in to FM for service. Also, while there are repair shops that fix boards, the range of repair prices varies widely, and increasingly it's the case that independent repair of certain boards ends up costing more than it would if FM fixed it. This is sometimes due to scarcity of parts, since parts have to be salvaged from other boards, as well as just general market demand that shops and sellers know they can (and do exploit). It's gotten a bit...unfortunate, that the community has in large part turned repair into something even worse than what FM has created. And most of it revolves around the desire for battery modifications. I'll never put an extended battery into my boards. Now that I've built a board, and DIY parts are coming out this year, I'll continue to leave my boards as is and instead rebuild another one with a larger battery and more power. Anyway, cheers Don. Great video.

Thank you so much, Mario! I like to turn to those who are more knowledgable, like you, when it comes to these topics. I have two stock boards and haven't had to live with the consequences of making modifications (outside of the tire). But both of my boards are out of warranty based on the mileage they have alone. I look forward to your future videos about the board you built. The community is lucky to have someone as dedicated and knowledgable as you to turn to for advice and your experience. Cheers!

@@followdon I appreciate that, it means a lot. Frankly, I've just had the time and lack of care that leads to me breaking a lot of stuff and attempting to figure out how to fix them. Mostly, in an effort to not be embarrassed in having to tell someone I need help fixing it. 😬 But it's important to have a real variety in content styles and approaches, and that's why I very much appreciate your stuff. It's not the common kind of video that I find just by scrolling recent Onewheel uploads. Keep up the artistry, sir. Maybe we'll ride one day. 👍

Stock Pint newbie here. Planning to do the VNR mod later on when I am closer to the end of my warranty and I am feeling confident my board is solid. I got the Pint because I figured the XR is old tech and will get upgraded/replaced first. If the new XR is AMAZING and I LOVE one wheeling I can get it and my GF can ride the Pint. Otherwise I'll just keep rocking the Pint with its carvy tire and punchy torque for $950 + VNR costs. One thing I like about the VNR is I can leave the external battery at home when I don't need the extra range. I ride solo so no need to keep up with anyone else on group rides. I just want to explore a bit farther than stock Pint range. I'll grab a fast charger soon. I figure that keeps my warranty in tact for now, while I wait to do the VNR and I can drink a coffee while I charge my Pint if I want to get out further afield. Great video. Keep 'em coming. :)
@followdon
@followdon 3 года назад
Thanks so much! My Pint is still stock and the Ultracharger is super helpful. Most of my solo rides are shorter and so the Pint's range is fine. 95% of the time, I'm riding solo, but the group rides have been super fun. Although the XR is old tech, now that I have both boards, it's hard for me to choose the Pint when I'm going out on rides. I appreciate the faster cruising speed of the XR. I got a great deal for the XR used, paid $1300. Although I brought the warranty up, I can't imagine paying to ship my board to California for a warranty replacement. The other part of meeting your local community of riders is that you're likely to find a local vendor or rider who can help you with repairs, mods, and tire changes. Thanks so much for watching! More to come very soon!

Isaac is faced with this decision right now. He knows he wants more range for the group rides, though at 85lbs he's basically getting XR range anyway. I think his biggest anxiety is the speed deficit. A few mph cruising speed makes a noticable difference in keeping up with the group. He's not comfortable leaning into the pushback and falls toward the back of the group often

Really cool and clean video! I loved it and look forward to more. I personally moved on from a VnR’d Pint to an XR and have since installed a CBXR mini. I think the XR is much more comfortable to ride overall- the pushback doesn’t kick in way too early, unlike the Pint, although I think it’s a valid argument that the XR is more dangerous because of this fact. For longer rides, I’ll definitely recommend a stock XR. I host weekly group rides across the Atlanta area and I’ve found that although the Pint is capable of keeping up with XRs, most Pint riders aren’t comfortable constantly riding through pushback just to do so. I prefer to, instead, make my group rides Pint friendly. I limit runs to six miles and stop off for a charge & a beer, and then continue. My main recommendation is a Hyper charger for both the XR and the Pint. Especially for the Pint. It definitely bums the group out to hang around for a Pint to charge up to full for two hours just to get six miles, so I’ve had to send the group off and hang behind for the Pint before. My second general group ride tip is to BE COMFORTABLE riding your board! Don’t show up to a group ride the day after you’ve bought your board! And most definitely, don’t be a hazard to other riders or pedestrians! If you haven’t gotten your Onewheel legs, don’t put others in danger. Wait until you’re safe before going out in public! If money is your main concern, go for the Pint with an aftermarket Hyper charger. You may not go as far on a charge, but it’s still worth it and you can still get back out there in 50 minutes! First, thank you for subscribing and commenting, Nolan! All the tips you shared related to the Atlanta group rides I am screaming yes at, to my computer screen. You are so right! (Bigger guy, Size 14 shoe, just means to ride comfortable it’s got to be the XR) I’m just having FOMO anxiety. I feel like Future Motion has to be making something new for this year. Updated XR with shocks, longer battery, better battery tech (like increase battery efficiency through the app), bigger lights, etc. I feel like if they have something coming out it will be announced in April. With the Fed Package coming soon people will have a bit of money to spend.

Congratulations! Learn to the front sensors and how to dismount first. Don’t try to push the top speed. You’ll feel the board noticeably resist speeds above 17 mph. As your confidence builds, you may want to check your app to see your speed in real time. Relax your body to feel more stable. If you bought the pint for a quick last leg, or just want to ride for a short period and not looking to group ride or do anything but vanilla riding, then your not the people I'm talking about next. You bought it for what it was made for. Can't fault you for that. But for most of the owners your this guy. I saw a pint in the wild yesterday, we did the pleasantries. Then he asked what I was riding, then he goes into a monologue without me asking, why he bought the Pint over the XR Clearly he's had the question asked a lot and from the position that his choice was wrong. He said because he wasn't sure if he was going to like it and it was cheaper. Now I'm paraphrasing here but it's true "he regrets not finding his balls and committing by doing his homework yet spending a grand and finding out after was easier???" The way he described the problem it's like I imagine all the pint owners out there feel embarrassed and stupid for not just buying the XR in the first place. I could tell he has had that conversation over and over in his head and with other owners. And it's more apparent by the fact that he busted out in this monologue without me even asking and like MOST all other pint owners do regret having to spend 2x more on top of the $1,000 already spent. Again if your cheap or not rich, then why would you not buy the OW that can do everything in one buy vs ride a cheaper one that if you did any amount of homework before you spent a grand on a pint you could of had all your questions and fears answered by the community and watching videos. You would know it has less than half the range, it's slower, it can't go off road in uneven terrain. The battery drains ridiculously and you get battery (sag at only 3-4mi!) And when going off-road especially in grass. Less clearance so you CANT go everywhere, also if you didnt like OWXR they are crazy easy to resale. You can even make more selling the parts if it's very new. Less moding is available "do you see a lot of aftermarket frames for pints or half of the other cool shit XR's can take. Any pine owners don't give me any squawking, Pint owners riding in groups versus XR owners it's clear the proof is in the pudding. You can say all day that it doesn't have the above weaknesses but floating in the real world all those weaknesses come out glaringly obvious on group rides. Point is if your low income why would you buy the cheap version when you find out you like it but now have to spend 2x more totaling $3,000. When you could of just messaged someone that owns a one-wheel and go ride there's to see if it's worth getting instead of spending $1,000 on a half-ass version only to find out you made a mistake?🤨 So class, what is more expensive spending $3,000 for the lazy/I didn't do my homework way/ I could have figured out what I wanted by just meeting a Community member and riding there's like I did or could of Reddit the shit out of the one wheel group. Or just saving $800 more and getting the one that you can go group riding without having to be the dick that makes everyone wait on or asking people to not go off road areas. Or buying ridiculous heavy external mobile chargers to take with you. That cost enough to make just buying a XR in the first place worth it. It's like saying to your friends I bought the tricycle because I didn't want to spend my money on the BMX because I didn't know if I would like it. While all your other friends on a BMX bike are having the time of their lives. 🤨😒 Ok mom enjoy your trike... I mean seriously you're buying a one-wheel death machine but not sure if you will like it? Then your the type that should be buying the cheap Chinese knockoffs.

@@followdon Ya don't and can't fault the owners that use it for what it was intended. But something about them not asking simple questions like do I want to charge after 20min-30min of riding? Can I get to the places I want to go and ride at the place I want to ride at on 9 miles along with getting back home? Will that place have a charge spot? If not do you want to have to bring my car with me and drive to the location I want to ride most of the time? More important if you don't even own a car! Can cars get to the location I want to ride? Do I want to be the dick that can't keep up? Do I want to have to ask other people to stop so you can charge because you though riding a scooter to a sportbike ride was a good idea? When I ask most pint owners on Reddit if they could get a do over before they spent the money on the pint, would they still get a pint over a XR? Did they say Y or N? What did most say? Is the pint as easy to repair as the XR? These are the deep questions one should ask yourself before you just go blow a $1,000. Especially when there's a more attractive choice just not the price to choose from and there the used market to consider. Seriously that's the kind of shit I asked myself before buying the onewheel+ or XR as the Pint wasnt out at the time when I bought mine. So the decision was even harder for me because both One Wheels where exactly the same just the battery was different. But seriously do people really not ask questions before they do stuff that will effect there life for year's? It's scary when you find out Common Sense isn't that common on this planet. I mean is it really that much of a stretch to ask questions before you do something?

@@anarex0929 I bought the Pint first. It was an approachable price point that allowed me to take a risk on a product that looked fun, but I had no real experience with. I was the guy on RU-vid watching eveery Pint vs. XR video, and often the author's of those videos framed the conversation as if the numbers were close. Doing the math on paper, the Pint would get me where I needed to go. I could charge in those places, and get home okay. I bought the Ultracharger with the Pint to make the charging time bearable. I loved my Pint for just about a year before I started to get XR envy. And when a good deal popped up on a used XR, I bought one. I do think each of our journeys are different. And we have many respectable Pint riders in the DMV community that don't ask us to wait up and manage to keep up with the crew. But most are using some type of extended battery solution…
@anarex0929
@anarex0929 3 года назад
@@followdon ya I noticed a lot use those, but I see it as a failure of imagination when I see so many pint honors riding with those mobile chargers. It's severely restricts how you ride. And there is no chance of balls to the wall riding in your tethered like that even if it's on your rim. You hit one of those battery packs at 20 miles an hour while it has a full charge and you have a small explosion on your hand or fire. Not to mention damaging your boards circuitry and Battery just to keep up. See that's the thing did you read in that article I gave you if the dendrites make it through the third layer you have a short which will cause the battery to superheat that's why you see those cell phone lithium-ion batteries blowing up like a balloon or catching fire and in those batteries the dendrites got through the third layer! Not good. And the dendrites they only grow when you're charging they don't grow when you're extracting the energy well technically they do but they don't grow anywhere remotely as fast as the ones that come from the charging side. So those people riding those pints with the extended battery pack or just basically and definitely keeping it in that charging state the state that causes the dendrites to grow the fastest. Still, that would be an interesting topic to bring up on Reddit and ask how many people's extended batteries have gotten hot or ballooned or caught fire or exploded, and has anyone seen one detonate from a crash? Or how many miles do you get on your internal pints battery without the extension after using it for a year? The community could profit from that information and it would make a larger portion of the population more informed There's a good battery inside of them so they'll take a while to get to that point but when it happens is going to rapidly happen. And most likely while they're riding it statistically. Also charging at the lowest current possible well not running is the slowest way of growing the dendrites making the battery last more cycles. The videos and literature are out there you just have to digest them. They're not trying to brag on them at this moment but if you're using one of those external battery packs you made a bad purchasing decision. It would be better to eat the hard-earned experience and loss in value and sell the board and buy a board that fits their riding habits it's a lot safer for them. Or like I said spend $2,000 more and keep it. It's about the Boards health and their safety. FYI I intentionally put it in that order on purpose too. 😏 If they sold the board how many people do you think would be honest about charging while riding or using a battery extension? Or would they only say it if asked? I wonder how many damaged battery pints are being sold used?

Unless you weigh less than 160, don’t buy a pint. You won’t be able to cruise at XR speeds without tons of pushback and risk of nosedive every 2 seconds. Basically GT over everything now.

The Pint X is worth saving the extra money for if you don’t want to drop $2200 or $2250 on a GT. The Pint price was increased to $1050 ($100 more than its original price). That means the Pint X is $449 more (instead of $549 more). It’s well worth saving for the Pint X if anyone was still considering a Pint today.

3:50 doesn't get that you can do the same with the XR. Or be even smarter and not go cheap when you know your going to ride far and get a XR with a battery upgrade made for the OW that goes 38miles on one charge. Not to mention it won't destroy your battery over time like his does. Frankly who wants to destroy their battery while riding in all the safe places in a city ONLY. It's like hearing a guy talk made shit about his lambo being perfect but never took it out of his neighborhood. Never drove in a creek bed, or in a forest, or ride in a desert. Never had wild animal chase him or have to dodge security and pick up your OW and toss it in a ditch so you don't get caught at a golf course. Want to try that with a big ass battery hanging on the top of your one-wheel? An yes I have done all these things. Therefore he's never experienced any of the things that the other floaters have been doing on there's that his wouldn't be able to do since his can't. Basically a city slicker. 2nd do you really want to be doing tricks or rolling your OW or crashing with a heavy battery mounted to it and along with a weaker frame and clearance and the fail point be your plug? An quick disconnect won't always save you. What about water damage causing a short ever hear of rain, puddles, mud, random chance. How about going faster? How about going off road where your going to run into those problems more often? Do you really want to fuck up your charging port, the CPU, BMU, battery. Not to mention charging while riding destroys your internal battery SO much faster by increasing the amount of dendrites that grow from the excessive charging. So in the end your back where you started because you internal battery can't keep a charge. So that's a another $300-$400 to ship your OW back to FM for a new battery. But hey as long as it doesn't cost you more than a XR up front right. Oh right your not doing all those things because your on a pint. Nevermind I get it now. 🤭 He has problems coming SOON he just doesn't think he will be THAT guy. I've had people try to steal my one wheel, I've been hit by multiple cars on my one wheel. I've fallen off 2 foot cliffs at night because a sidewalk just stopped and started again 15ft away for no reason! With a bed of big Axe shaped rocks as the soft bead I was to fall into. I cracked a rip on that one, it later broke when I sneezed while adding some pepper while cooking for my family. I also kept riding that night an went to the tavern charged, eat and road home. No LYFT for me when I fall bad. I ride in, I dame well, will ride out under my own power. Crazy shit can happen at any moment it doesn't matter if you're a good person or a bad person riding in the city, riding out in the rural areas. Ah to be so horribly inexperienced and naive. This guy has no RL experience outside riding easy safe paths. You won't find this guy on the thrilling trails or rides. An you can tell by the way he leaves all that out. It shows he hasn't experienced it yet. It's not the mileage you travel in your safe space. It's how broad the experience you gain from going into the unknown. I mean fuck what about that epic black guy that has the crazy high mileage on his OW talking about all the water damage he's had to his board from hard riding and what's this? He got water damage from making modifications to his foot pad. I think water took his board out 2x! But this guy here talking about it's PERFECT but only in all the safe spaces of his inexperience. Props for ingenuity but he gets a failing grade for not thinking about tomorrow's consequences and added cost over what the XR would of cost. Seriously this guy needs to look up how batteries operate and how they die and/or catch fire and destroy your circuitry. BEFORE you mount a external battery not after you screw shit up. Also using a power source not tailored to your electronics causes micro problems within the circuitry over time and puts greater strain on your internal battery too. This is exactly why you upgrade your battery internally not externally. Not to mention asking yourself simple questions before you spend a lot of money on a device like "am I going to be riding far." That simple but smart question could of saved him. www.azom.com/article.aspx?ArticleID=14293 Seriously most of the mistakes and problems I've hear about one wheel riders comes down to not doing your homework before you leap. Though props for wearing a full face helmet.

Trigger warning for people that like to cancel others for disagreeing or having their own opinions also saying mean things. The LEFT has turn Society into kindergarteners I fucking swear. Unless you already own a XR, then pints are the dumb option, less resilient to damage less options to repair yourself it's also designed to be less repairable. It can't go everywhere a XR can go due to it's build choices. You also can't keep up with the other riders. You're always going to be the guy that everyone wants to smile to your face but inside, in there head at the group rides they're thinking why didn't you spend a few hundred dollars more and get the f****** XR if you're going to follow us on a group ride? And I tried to ride with pints but stopping two times during the ride just for them to charge for over 2hr sitting. Is like going surfing with other people but you're asking to borrow all their equipment because you couldn't be bothered to commit and buy your own hardware so instead you bought defective/ physically Limited equipment because you didn't do your homework. It feels like a super dick move to come to a ride and expect everyone else to wait on you being a cheap date IE "hey guys we need to stop so I can charge again". It's like bringing a bicycle to a sportbike meeting and asking everyone to ride slower and don't go off road oh and I need to stop for gas again. Even though you know the group is going further than your board can take you. Not to mention I always see pints avoiding the grass because they don't want to eat up their battery. Or they can't make it through the pot holes in the grass. If how the board is made and designed makes you not want to go places that your OWXR can go, then that was a poor buying decision and it's clear you didn't do your homework or put much thought into it. If I was still riding my sport bikes, Pint owners would be classified as the half ass cheap weekend warriors. An I'm low income, but still could see all the smart choice is to save longer and get the XR or buy a used one cheaper.
