Worked for Ford of Europe back then and had plenty of Escort RS Turbos as pool cars, company cars etc... But I went out and bought the Renault 5GT Turbo after I left Ford and felt it was a quicker point and squirt car, particularly down a tight B-road. Handling felt a lot better and even though the engine itself was more agricultural, it just felt more torquier than the CVH. Great vid though... brings back lovely memories of great times back then.
Loved this video. Sorry Jamie, but if I had to choose and I wish I had the opportunity, it would have to be the renault 5 GT turbo. Everything about that car is awesome 👌 😊
No way. I had both back in the early 2000s, a series 1 exactly like in the video, and a red Renault 5 turbo. The RS was a far better car imo, and was far cooler. Wish I'd kept both now, I sold them for pennies 😅🙄🙄
@@mrb3673 Everyone has there own opinions and I can respect that. I had a red 205 GTI 1.6 that had a super chip fitted taking it to 130bhp. Wish I still had it! I passed my test in Jan 95 and I wanted to buy my mechanic friends R5GT, he'd had it bare shell sprayed in Electric blue. But my dad said he'd kick me out if I bought it😔.My dad had the original XR3 with the rubber wing 🤣
Loved it! Takes me back to when both of my friends had these cracking cars!! Racing in the country roads of Hertfordshire just puts the best smile on your face! UNFORGETABLE MEMORIES AND GOOD TIMES!!
Ahh the age-old R5 GT Turbo V Escort rs Turbo debate. 30 years ago i chose the R5 Gt Turbo. Today, if i could afford one ... id choose the R5 GT Turbo all day long.
Owned a 1990 GT Turbo for 9 years between 96 and 05. One off engine custom built by GT Tuning in Dorset. 300+ bhp with the right fuel and octane booster. Absolutely terrifying on full boost. Sold it for 5 grand. Recently saw it on eBay for 18k. Wish i had that money spare these days.
That 5 GT Turbo was a stock colour, the same as the one I had. But the car you tested was actually a mk1 dressed up as a mk2, with a mk2 interior and later colour coded bumpers. I saw mine running around London a few years after I had sold it and someone had done the same to it. Blew 3 turbos and the drivers seat broke. But I loved it, did 50k miles in 3 years, mostly driving for fun. Nice video
problem there was the oil used, mine i used semi synthetic then the new released Model 1, Renault recommend that multigrade oil and it clogged after excess heat and it didn't help people taking there R5 in for a kwit fit £10 oil change when they were highly modified
I bought my gt turbo in 1986 REG was C738ULW BOUGHT IT FROM GARY KEMP FROM SPANDAU BALLET ,THE MOST FUN CAR AND THE BEST LOOKING ONE PEARL WHITE WITH BLACK AND RED GRAPHICS MXV MICHELIN TYRES ON SICK ALLOYS ELECTRIC ROOF WHAT A BLAST I HAD IN THAT CAR ITS A B ROAD TOWN WHIPPER ,NOT GOOD FOR LONG TRIPS OR MOTORWAYS THE TURBO BOOMING ON AND OFF ,LOVED IT SWAPPED FOR A D REG GOLF GOT 16V GREAT VID !GATE13SW6CREW cfc
Having driven both back in the day, the r5 was quite torquey and lively. The escort was not torquey then had a lift in power above 4k . Also had heavy steering. Now a tuned version is completely different.
No way the Renault had a weight of 850kg. I had one, and the weight was 970kg. I know, because i put it on the scale. Maybe earlier Renault 5 had less weight. But it blew the escort easily.
The R5 GT Turbo is a cool car and a little pocket rocket but man the S1 RS Turbo is still such a beautiful looking car. Pretty much every bit of the styling was perfect.
Had a R5 GTt back in my early 20s. Owned it for 7 years. Back then my choice was absolutely the Renault over the Ford. Now though I'd take both!! Would have to be the S1 RS Turbo though. On the streets back in the 90s these two cars were the frequent night time drag race from the traffic lights. Good times
Out of all the cars I've had if i could have 1 back it would be my modified R5 GTT closest thing to a road going gokart ive had ,but at the time i was glad to have sold it for £800 considering the reliability and the fact i was paying £2200 third party back in1997
im a ford rs guy through and through, but owned a 230bhp r5gtt for 5 years and it was easily the better drivers car and put the power to the ground with no probs
7:02 you think the radio would be ok like that but when you try a eject a cd it struggles to push the cd up. I’ve had the same cd stuck in mine for 10 years 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The last week of July 1987 I had off work as changing jobs so did the only sensible thing and booked a load of test drives - Renault 5 GT Turbo, Pug 205 GTI (1.6 and 1.9), Fiat Uno Turbo, Toyota MR2, Escort RS Turbo. 5GT T definitely quickest, most fun, best handling. Uno second on performance but agreed with reviews at the time that it span inner front wheel too easily as tall narrow body. Pug's probably best built though they did have stalling issues (and handling issues going by a friends family that wrote off three of them). Toyota was a massive yawn and Escort well, in today's lingo would best be described as "Meh". I nearly bought the 5GT T but parents split and I had to rent so that was that.
That particular GT Turbo is a bit of a hybrid ... Being a D REg 87 car, its a phase 1 but it has phase 2 smoothed ( trim delete) body-coloured bumpers and grill, rear spoiler and front and rear seats. Rear arches with fake grill air intakes are standard phase one. Phase 2 cars also got the GT Turbo side decals. Blue paintwork was available on phase 1 cars but its possibly the rarest colpur now!? this car looks to be painted in phase 2 electric blue.
great video i owned a series 1 rs turbo . then i drove a ren 5 turbo / it was a lot faster in every way/ i eneded up buying astra gte 16 valve / that was fasterthan both escort and ren . brill video
I always had the fords. MK1 xr3i, MK2 rs turbo, then a 1990 sapphire cosworth and a focus rs after that. Then I went to German cars. The fords always had the nicest interiors in my opinion, they just looked classier 👍👍
The Renault is a great little pocket rocket. Only downsides were the anti-Perc fan than used to sieze up and cause a loom fire and replacing the starter motor was a real swine of a job!
@@-doggy-6670 yes... and with the VW Golf MK2 engine aswell and this version with the renault engine was exported from brazil to some europena countries like denmark and sweden Escort with the Renault engine ru-vid.com1oZ1JO8g6RI escort with the VW Golf engine ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cJARbECEK3g.html&ab_channel=GustavoBrasilAntigos
Hit the sweet spot with me, and judging by your smile, very much with you, too! 😁 You defo would have both had a thumbs up from me, had I seen you both. Proving popular in the comments, but R5 GT Turbo for me, too. Had an XR2 back in '89 until I was relieved if it (😠), but always hankered after the Renault.
It all boils down to personal preference i purchased a series 1 Escort Turbo 1985 brand new..i loved it the performence was awesome the looks unsappasable..it was stolen after 3 weeks...😢
This video made me so sad 😢I had a 5GT turbo raider in 1992 mint bought off one owner and I regret it every day that I sold it . But in 1995 wasn’t as old and wise oh well
I had both back in the day, that exhaust on the Renault is definitely not a standard, you could hear the turbo whistle more. The Renault was better around estates and town because it weighed nothing, the escort is better down country twisting roads and b roads
R5 GT Turbo had better brakes and suspension and was faster in std form, the RST was the more tunable car though as when the R5 GT Turbo went past 200bhp they were pretty unreliable, both great cars in their own right though.
Renault 9 GT turbo is more comparable to an escort. Arguably even more balanced than the 5 too. Good luck finding one these days though. 21 turbo is a belting car too.
Had both in the 90's a GT Tuning r5 turbo which was sooo much fun and a Power engineering fettled with RS Turbo both were great but i just perfer the looks of the escort , sadly mine got stolen and stripped and the guy that bought my R5T turned the boost up to max and blew the engine >.< , happy days
I had a series 2 90 spec rs turbo with a power engineering build at 204 bhp back in the 90s and a 184 bhp 5 turbo and the 5 was definitely a lot faster.
Renault 5 GT Copa Turbo és el mejor, 200 km/ hora sin coger temperatura aceleraración impresionante, para carreteras de 1km de recta y curvas no hay coche que te siga. 🎉🎉🎉🎉
The big night & day difference for me is Turbo fuel injection from the Series 1 RS & Turbo carburettor for the GT5. Typical French, they always hate change.
Loving your video until the horrible and too loud music comes in, there’s just no need for music. Chat or engine noise is so much better. Let’s face it, probably 0.01 percent of the viewers will like the music you do. If music made videos then top gear or harry garage would do it. Only my opinion
Owned both these cars in the 90’s, Renault was a crisp low mileage example, I remember perk fan, overheating and actually ran and revved at one point with the key out! The couple of occasions it ran it was great but in the 30+ years I’ve been driving I’ll say that R5 was the worst car I ever owned and some! 😮 Rs turbo was a fantastic car, not on the same page at all as the Renault by far 👍
@@terryterry_yiannimize1717 gapping family Audi A4s and BMW 318s is nothing special, these are basic cars. RS turbo and GT5 etc. were kids cars with body kits to make them look 'cool'. Being fast is relative to your experience, as a kid they were fast, compared to a RS500 or a modern day Golf GTI they are slow asf.
