Is The Suzuki DRZ400 Freeway Capable? An Only *Slightly* Terrifying Dual Sport Freeway Test

Can you ride a Suzuki DRZ400 dual sport on the freeway? Like most dual sports, the Suzuki DRZ400S isn't really designed to travel at freeway speeds. Dual sports are also known for their "go anywhere, do anything" versatility, so the fact that the Suzuki DRZ400 wasn't really designed to do something has never stopped it from actually doing that thing. Ride along on my Suzuki DRZ400 freeway test as we venture onto the local freeway to test the DRZ400 highway riding capabilities. The DRZ does surprisingly well, even at freeway speeds. The bike has power to accelerate out of trouble and has no trouble keeping up even at 75-80 miles per hour. The DRZ 400 top speed is plenty high for freeway riding, and I think you could get it to 90 MPH fairly easily.
Dual sport motorcycles on highway isn't always the most comfortable thing in the world, but it's not impossible by any means. These versatile bikes truly can handle anything, even freeway speeds.

It's really underrated on the highway, because folks compare it to heavier and larger cc bikes. I was pleasantly surprised with the highway capability of my DRZ400S with stock gearing. It feels fine at 75mph with acceleration left. Feels like it will do that all day long. To me the DRZ400S is the ONLY true 50/50 dual sport bike still in production today. Great vid Dork!

Hey there, I just bought my first drz400s . I am new to the dual sport world. Curious during the break in period is it ok to cruse at 65 ish? There is no rpm gage and couldn’t hear it really. Felt fine but did not know if that’s stressing it to soon? I hope not lol I had to rise it 60 miles to get home :0

@@seanee573 I've always heard that when breaking in anything, the key is to ride at varying speeds, not one speed. I would ride about 50-55 starting out for about 20-30 miles, then bump it up to 65 for about 10-15 miles. then back to 55 for about 10-15 , then 65-70 for about 20-30 miles. So you get the idea start slow and then mix it up until the break in period is achieved.

Has plenty of power for hwy use. I rode mine fully loaded with gear from Salt Lake City Utah to north of Seattle, wa. And i kept up with all traffic....thats 80mph speed limits. With about 80lbs of gear on. Running 15/41 gears. Will cruise super smooth at 75mph with those gears. Currently dropped down to 15/42 sprockets. Did the entire Idaho BDR and back. So yes. DRZ is way easily capable of hyw speeds anywhere in the country. Perfect for small adv bike. I have about 40,000 miles of running like this on my drz400s. Its my unicorn and does it very very well.

The thing I never understood is why the predecessor the dr350 has 6 gears while the drz only has 5. Suzuki really F'd that up. Also the relatively low seat height (34") on the dr350 with still high ground clearance is a large advantage. Man I'm going to have to find another dr350s. What a great bike.
@T.S.-eo7my
@T.S.-eo7my 6 месяцев назад
Because the motor has such a wide torque/RPM spread. It’s over-square, which is actually atypical for off-road use. Watch enough videos of the DRZ400S, and you’ll see that too many people are inclined to loaf along, well below what RPM the motor is capable of…and they are the most likely to be the ones complaining about a lack of 6 speeds (to keep RPM’s low). Meanwhile, those who aren’t afraid to go down a tooth or two on the rear sprocket, use the correct sized speed rated tires, and pin the throttle discover that 5 gears works out perfectly.
@imrelentless9577
@imrelentless9577 5 месяцев назад
@T.S.-eo7my what does pin the throttle mean just twist? I wonder if the drz400sm can handle the highway like 4 hrs of riding. Just straight up cruzing all day what would I need to do?
@T.S.-eo7my
@T.S.-eo7my 5 месяцев назад
@@imrelentless9577 For the DRZ400SM, drop the rear sprocket size down to a 39 tooth. And yes, it’s just a matter of getting comfortable with carrying more rpm (twisting the throttle). The fact is it’s a 400, which is still on the smaller side CC-wise for extended highway use. Super Moto bikes (of any brand) by virtue of their design are not intended to be highway cruisers, nor do they have the seating position to afford the rider any semblance of “comfort” at sustained speeds above 50 mph even though several popular YT influencers try to demonstrate otherwise. SM’s are purpose built for attacking tight, gnarly, pavement race courses (like the old school BMX tracks). 4 hours at highway speed in/on ANY vehicle would be a complete bore to almost anyone, much less the typical motorcycle rider.
@wanderingwonder111
@wanderingwonder111 17 дней назад
@imrelentless9577 Holding the throttle all the way open. I rode about 5 hours taking my DRZ (s model) home from the seller (mixed state roads and freeways). It'll hold 70mph no problem, and I've gotten it up to 90 in several seconds. It's very uncomfortable tho, my hands were numb and my legs and core were cramped from fighting the wind. I think it's a question of where you want to make concessions. If ur looking for a comfortable highway cruiser I'd probably look at another bike. If you're willing to sacrifice highway comfort for a fun bike in the twisties then it might be right for you

I honestly thought it'd be scary without a 6th gear, but with the engine being torquey i don't even need to kick down, not like I could anyway. I also have a Ninja 300, so I'd naturally take that if i'm doing long freeway stints, but two things I didn't expect from the DRZ on the freeway were the huge difference in vibrations and just the skinny tire. ayyy yea. I just got a DRZ400S as well. this bike NEEDS to be modded. I jetted mine, put on full exhaust Yoshimura, installed IMS Fuel tank cause its stock tank is way too tiny. it needs a new seat LOL. I got seat concept low soft seat. SO much better. of course if ur doing highway a lot then change ur tires to street. but I use mine for quick trips and commuting. I LOVE this bike after the mods. Its not built for super speed, and its not built for long adventure ride cruising at high speeds. i go about 75 on the highway and its all good. the issue is that because its light, strong gusts of wind will make u wobble and thats maddd sketchy. and if you plan on cross country with this thing. i guess change sprockets? you can still do it but i think going cross country on a higher horsepower bike with a nice laidddd back feel would be much more comfy. but bikes have different uses. this bike is AMAZING if ur not looking to throw down a ton of money for a cruiser or a speedster. i love it

My gen 1 klr felt ok at 65 max. But my drz (3x3, jetted, fmf) cruises 85 all day comfortably. Watch out going east. When you get over the pass and the hot desert air is fighting the cold mountain air the turbulent wind on the east side of the cascades blows the light drz all over at anything over 55mph, at least up here in WA, probably the same down there.

How do you think it would do loaded down with gear on? My issue is that the 2 of the 3 ways I would normally go have large hills to traverse. Just not really sure how it would do. I did have a DR-350 that handled the freeways just fine but it was a 6 speed and I never loaded it down with anything on it and no major hills on the freeway.
@DorkintheRoad
@DorkintheRoad 3 года назад
Lots of gear gives you a double whammy of disadvantages: both extra weight and wind resistance. I think the bike will do anything, but you're going to be wound out trying to go up big hills...I bet it will do it but it won't be great for the bike. I'd probably do it for short distances, but I wouldn't want to do a multi-day trip that way, I don't think.

Depends on gearing. With 15/41 I can do over 100mph, buuuuuuttt and thats a big butt, in the dirt you have to clutch a lot and use mostly 1st gear, and it's better to use a 50/50 tire so that it doesn't hook up too much and kill the motor. I went to Idaho from Utah and back with full camping gear I can do 88mph uphill.
@machupikachu1085

Hi Chris. I was thinking about using Tusk Dsport tires with the 15/41 gearing. I do about 50/50 street/dirt riding. Will that be hard on the motor?
@chriswumperone2759
@chriswumperone2759 2 года назад
@@machupikachu1085 no it's easy on the motor if you keep it under 70mph, but what I was referring to is that the tall gears required more use of slipping the clutch in off road hard climbing and that the lack of traction on a 50/50 tire helps relieve some clutch use, but the down side is that you don't make it up loose steep grades that you might with off road gears. I went back to 15/44 and a slighly more aggresive tire because I was doing less highway and more off road

Compared to what? Make sure you’re comparing wet-weight to wet-weight, same engine displacement (yes, it matters), and all the amenities of a typical dual sport (bigger brakes, heavier gas tank, steel handle bars, DOT lighting, mirrors, weighted bar ends, bigger flywheel and stators, pillion pegs, heavier subframe, etc. etc.)

For a dirt bike, no. I can't think of a street bike less than around 350 pounds however, and this was a highway test, where the extra weight helps a great deal.
