Is the timing of the junior doctors' strike 'indefensible'? LBC debate

Ben Kentish and GP Dr Bob Gill debate the junior doctor's strikes as Ben brands them 'indefensible'.
Members of the British Medical Association are in the middle of a three-day strike which began on Wednesday, with more days planned in January as they demand a 35 percent pay rise.
Hospital bosses have claimed the strikes over the Christmas period have “fractured” their relationship with consultants and increased the risk of patients dying during action.
New analysis shows the walkout could see the NHS waiting list, which currently sits at 7.7 million, rise above eight million for the first time in history.
Of the 25 days of strike action already taken by junior doctors this year, analysis revealed that an average of 35,500 appointments were cancelled on each day.

I thought you had to be clever to be on LBC. How hard is it to understand that if there are grievous issues within a company or industry the standard course of action is striking. AND the normal and logical way to plan strikes is to demonstrate the biggest impact. All workers in all industries have the right to do that. The government is well aware of this and so knows that any strike action planned by doctors may be planned in a way that compromises the safety and health of patients. They know this and yet refuse to act. It is not the doctors who have invented this approach to striking it is the natural way to make an impact. Ben here would like doctors to be hamstrung when making demands for better conditions. That’s what got us into this mess in the first place. The blame for this lies 100% on the government and this presenter should be ashamed of himself for being such a narrow minded arselicker

@@taffyterrier I think he's getting his point across in a less than optimilhm way and had some unfortunate ly phrased answers to pointed comments by the host But it doesn't change the fact that every day of the week the staffing crisis is happenning and if the news media covered the problem in line with how big it is having the host hearing about it and having some talk radio hours filled with chat about it would be laughably sparse coverage in comparrison. When the nurses and paramedics went of strike I k. Ow for a fact that in two regions at least their level of promised cover was actually greater than the normally staffed previous two weeks. How darkly humorous and insane is that? A normal shift can have staffing stretched so thin that managers jobs are doubled up and call centres are taking in requests for diminishing resources at painful levels... But when the staff want to strike to make their voices heard they are held to promises of staffing levels that see members on picket ready to return to work so they don't breach the safe agreed level Only for that staff member to return to a job that is seeong coverage that they would hope to see as the regular minimum... The government has a monopoly on training contracts and the ability to manipulate pay for this group knowing JDs cannot leave without losing training numbers. @@Alex-cw3rz Doctors have received a real terms pay rise ever year since 2004.

@@Alex-cw3rz Doctors received huge inflation busting pay rises from New Labour between 2004 and 2008 which the Commons Public Accounts Committee later denounced as ‘hopelessly unrealistic’ and when compounded more than compensate for any perceived “real terms pay cuts” between 2008 and 2022. Furthermore the alleged 30% real terms pay cut cited in your post is based on the discredited Retail Price Index measure of inflation and is therefore inaccurate and misleading. When the correct Consumer Prices Index is invoked the 30% figure reduces significantly.

@@Alex-cw3rz except they’re not counting shift allowance, on call, unsocial hours all built into their salary. They’re counting on people being thick enough not to be realise that.

Doctors should not be allowed to strike. Our young friend suddenly took ill yesterday, went to the hospital, told he has a brain tumour. Has to wait until next Friday - 6 days for the next stage due to the doctors strike! 🤬

6 days the junior doctors strike is 9 days it seems your story is actually caused by the defunding and privatisation of the NHS by the tories and not these strikes. Now please be honest with me, you made this up didn't you? I understand admitting it will be hard because it was disg usting thing to make up, but be honest and get it out there you will feel better for it.

I understand your frustrations. However emergency and urgent services are still available. Waiting lists for cancer management and chronic disease management have lengthened for a very long time, since before any strikes. I wouldn't be surprised if this 6 day wait would have been par for the course regardless - I can say that when I've done referrals for patients they've had to wait weeks to be seen due to the chronic underresourcing in the NHS. Again, I'm sorry for your friend and the impact this will have on you. Please try to enjoy the festive period, and if at any time your friend feels worse, advise them to go to A&E.

I'm so confused. To actively deny life saving care (emergency) is against the Equality Act 2010 and the hippocratic oath. If the BMA and doctors actively choose to close an AnE then they would be legally liable for any deaths caused, as would the government. It's both of their responsibilities (BMA and government) to keep safe staffing levels for emergency care during strikes. Locum (agency) doctors are brought in. Staff from nearly hospitals are moved around. The idea that all three would sit back and allow an AnE to completely shut is both criminal and medical negligence. The lawyers would be thanking Santa for the early xmas gift. Something doesn't add up here. Legally this doesn't make sense.

The government doesn’t run the nhs they just fund it, the nhs decides working conditions, hours and wages.
