Seemed a bit messy to me. The biggest problem with soutgate that ive noticed, is that hes more scared of losing then he is desperate to win. The team england have, they should be going out trying to outscore everyone, but southgate gets a goal and then shits himself ajd drops back every time. He doesnt even play defensively very well, pulling your players back and doing nothing else isnt a good defensive tactic. Also if thay is what he wants to do then why play kane and foden, 2 players who dont do well counter attacking. They suit a more high possession style where your getting 10+ shots a game. If we wanna sit back and counter then play watkins or tony upfront and gordon or bowen on the wing. Its like hes trying to do both without actually really doing either

I'm 54 years old. The first tournament i saw England play in was the 1980 European Championship held in Italy. The constant tropes i've heard trotted out for forty four years are: 1) They do it week in week out in the First Division/Premier League... 2) None of 'X's' players would get in our squad... 3) 'We take the lead and start dropping back onto the edge of our own box...' Our media keep telling us how good our players are. Meanwhile the players from these other countries don't rate us at all. Its just not the professional thing to say so to the media. Eidur Gudjohnsen was asked after Iceland beat England 2-1 'What was the team talk before the game'. He said 'our manager said "you guys are coming up against one of the most overrated teams in World football. They've got nothing. You'll beat them.'

What are you lads talking about! Trent’s played the most balls in behind, created the most chances against Denmark even though he got took off at 54mins. Yet cause he’s a natural rb. It’s lazy to pinpoint that and say that’s the problem. He came off and Gallagher came on and we actually looked more open cause he was running everywhere. No discipline. If you’re going to play Trent in midfield you need width and runners. Foden & kane both come deep, short and central. They want ball to feet. You take him off and then put Watkins on that is constantly looking to get in behind 🤦🏻‍♂️ At Liverpool our wingers offer width & constantly running in behind. Offering Trent to switch play or play it in behind. Similarly to what he did for the saka chance when he headed it into the side netting

Under Southgate, Trent could play in a 5-3-2 but not a 4-2-3-1 in competitive fixtures, because Southgate’s ultra-cautious approach and poverty of ambition creates a turgid, uninspiring performance. Trent isn't the issue, just an easy excuse. The stats show that in both games he created the most chances and delivered the most passes through the lines. The issue is no movement. Kane needs to go and Watkins in wit Trent so he has someone to pass up the field to. Don't understand why there is a focus on changing the team to accommodate Foden because it appears he can only play in one position. He played there in the warm up games and didn't deliver
@rogerwhite4073

so much commentary has centred on Trent's inclusion, despite the fact he's been subbed off in both games, with no notable improvement after the substitution. If Trent was the issue, then the 40 odd minutes in the second half against Denmark would have been plenty of time to rectify the situation. Why talk about one player when clearly the problems are all over the pitch. it's baffling that so many quality players seem to lose their composure on the international stage. Is Southgate to blame? I don't know, I just know that focussing on Trent is a red herring.
@_SIRenity_
@_SIRenity_ 6 дней назад
Clueless. This is why the eye test is important and not to just plainly look at stats. He is one of many problems but him in particular had a knock on effect. 3 'chances' weren't clear cut chances on goal either, you cant just read off the stat sheet and announce this like it justifies his selection there, its not a good reflection at all. It is disingenous of the quality of said 'chances'. It's not Trents fault lets be clear. It's SG playing him there in the first place and he is so uncomfortable there, he doesn't know where to be and how to effectively play there on both sides of the ball, it showed, and it has a knock on effect. To try get a player in just because he can knock a good long ball here and there, is so absurd af the cost of a balnce in the middle, lack of defensive protection as a pairing from CM, and giving up the ability to control the middle of the park going forward. All things that dont show up on the stat sheet and all things that was obvious in watching. Again' those 3 'chances' didn't create decent goal scoring opportunities, but they go down as a tick in the box of what qualifies as one in that category. Anyone leading with this stat as a defense of his selection there isn't looking at the game and how bad of a decision it was him being there. The best time for him to be effective in that role SG wanted was when the front 3 were changed and had better willing runners in behind, but he was taken off! Still, it isnt worth sacrificing everything else that came with him playing there. And just to reiterate, thats not Trents fault, its dire management on Southgates part

@@_SIRenity_ fine, but why no change after he's subbed off then?
@_SIRenity_
@_SIRenity_ 6 дней назад
@rogerwhite4073 I did say he's one of many problems in the side. The majority lays at SGs door, whether it be mental, tactical, and selection. Having an experiment when in a tournament is mental, and unfair to put that pressure on Trent. And you cant bring on a Gallagher for added energy in the middle, hes not bringing any more control in there which is part of what we needed, but was less of a liabiliy and didnt need babysitting by those around him, which were more isolated beforehand and made them nervous. Not the first and only problem we have by far like I said, but I'd like to say Rice is great reading defensivley and getting a foot in - THAT IS IT. He lacks everything else to be a 6. Sure, looks great at a West Ham when the team sits back, but not in a ball dominating side. Even Arteta realised that and has him in a more progressed role with Jorghino next to him as insurance - but the latter can dictate play and os good on the ball. And with Rice as an 8, if we were to play him there as has now been suggested, particularly at international level, there's plenty better than him, especially on other talented teams in the middle of the park. He isn't quick enough mentally, isnt quick enough on the ball, isn't cute enough on the ball, and isn't technically gifted. He's slowly being found out and quite overrated. Oh and Saka has another level he needs to get to - 1 assists for England in the actual tournaments is effing dire (not counting qualifiers we near always breeze through). Can he do A job there? Yes o course, but it won't be World beating, that's for sure. He's outclassed in every department as a 6 when comparing other top talented teams 6's. Even some who are coming off their bench. In short, that central pairing stunk the place out and caused a complete disconnect from back to front. Adding Trent to that mix is an effing joke

Whether you think the Danes are ordinary players or not, they look much better drilled (like every other team at the tournament so far). Any time Foden cut inside, the entire left channel was completely open. Trippier didn't fill in the gap, and Bellingham hasn't been coached to drift out there to support. If you're gonna play the CIty/Liverpool/Arsenal way, you need to have full backs and midfielders that understand to plug the gaps.

Walker, Stones and Foden are used to attacking and smashing teams at City. Rice and Saka the same for Arsenal. Kane the same with Bayern. Bellingham the same for Dortmund and Real. i think it’s Pickford himself that maybe doesn’t like playing it out from the back in that way, he’s not as good with his feet as Ederson or Raya, and i could be wrong but maybe Everton don’t play that way as much and play more long balls from goal kicks and such, so maybe it was him that got more nervous with it and that spread to the defenders which then lead to the opposition feeling that and pressing harder. cuz as a defender, if you’ve got your goalie in your ear yelling at you and he’s a bit nervous and on edge it just puts you more on edge and also puts in the back of your mind that you have one less option to pass to, and that you all aren’t in it as a team,, that if you or another defender mess up with a pass that your keeper isn’t gonna back you cuz that’s the style your team and living and dying by, but instead is gonna get mad and yell and blame you,,, could be wrong, but stones is great playing out from the back, not sure about how comfortable pickford is with both himself doing it and the defenders in front of him doing it

i definitely think it’s Southgate’s coaching that makes the players sit back deeper and defends after scoring a goal,, but it honestly could also be the players,, i could definitely see them getting a goal up, and then thinking about how bad the media would be if they now lost, and it get in their heads a bit, and they either consciously or subconsciously sit deeper as a result. yeah these guys are champions and incredibly cool under pressure for their clubs,,, but that england media and fans and PRESSURE is too much for seemingly any human being for the last bunch of decades! its the culture that has to change! Another option would be to move to 433 with a holding midfielder and two 8s. Wharton could do the holding and playmaker part if you want rice and bellingham to play as the 8s (obviously giving bellingham more licence to go forward). Would mean not playing a 10 I.e. drop foden. But you'd have a much more balanced team

The problem of England is that they always wanted to get the ball forward, they wanted to do it fast and efficiently. They don’t go sideways or backwards first in order to create the perfect situation to go forward. They think that doing more is inefficient, so they wanted to get forward as quick as possible. As a result, they never get the ball forward in a perfect situation. Because they never create such situations. If the opponent’s defence is being dragged wide open, then making a pass would become easy, even a half decent pass would turn into a great chance. If the opponent defence is still in good shape, it’s difficult to make a pass, and even if you make a great pass, it won’t turn into a half decent chance. England always get the ball forward against a defence that is still in good shape. They never think of going sideways and backwards to breakdown the defence first. If they can’t score goals, they would think the problem is because they lack urgency. So they rush the attack even more. They can’t be more incorrect. The build up of the 09-12 Barcelona and 17-20 ManCity were very slow and methodical.

That said, it was mainly an energy sapping game because on the day both sides were quite evenly matched. Denmark had the better strategy. Whatever you say about England's quality they were tested as a team and found lacking. The stand out player for me was Kyle Walker. The England squad gives great logical options. The defence is the best that can be mustered. Trent could replace Kyle against low block less pacey teams. Luke Shaw would play if fit. The midfield would jump a level with left footed. 100% passing accuracy on debut. Adam Wharton at 6 with Jude & Declan as the two 8's. Up front the fastest most pressing trio at the training camp. After all 5 substitutes means a whole attack can be changed at any time.

Too many clueless pundits, average level presenters and failed coaches have largely ignored the most blatant of points regarding the total lack of balance in the team (the entire left side!) and inappropriate assignment of formation, roles to totally unsuitable candidates and yes, Trippier will never be a left back, Rice isn't a number 6 (really, hasn't been for three years) and Foden isn't an inverted winger!
