I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Alex Bard at the US Soccer Foundation to talk about the Safe Spaces to Play Initiative where they are building 1,000 mini-pitches all over the US to encourage free-play and access to the game for American kids everywhere.
Check out what they're doing: ussoccerfoundation.org/progra...

Thank you! I make a yearly donation mainly because of the commitment to mini pitches. This makes me want to make it biannual donations.

Absolutely love this, it will make future generations more like Brazil with the skill and will help grow the game it’s hard to get a full 11vs 11 game unless it’s planed so the mini pitch will help it be more like basketball where u can just go by ur self or like just a couple people, also once the hood gets into soccer it’s done imagine tyreek hill playing soccer

@@graffbussiere4831- too tall. Ideal is a 6’5” wing defender with a 7’ wing-span.

11v11 isn’t where you develop ball control in tight spaces due to each player rarely touching the ball and there being so few instances of tight spaces. 4 v 4, 5 v 5, 6 v 6… depending on the pitch size. That’s where major development happens.
@graffbussiere4831
@graffbussiere4831 2 года назад
@@chancemiller9340 I didn’t really mean to relate 11v11 to getting better at developing ball control I do like that from the small court what I meant was that it’s a lot easier to get like 4/6 guys together for basketball but if u want to use a Field for soccer u need at least like 14 people so the small court\field helps make it easier to get together people for a game or even just play by ur self at practice skills which is hard to do on a large field

@@graffbussiere4831- I understood what you meant, but took it in a development direction. I was on an email list of 20+ guys in Argentina that got sent out each Sunday and then the first 12 to sign up got to play 6v6 on Monday night on a converted tennis court (not just the playing court, but the space on all sides) using 7’ h x 16’w goals. We’d rent the cancha for one hour, one night a week, and my skill level shot up compared to anytime in my life. (And I was an older dog learning new tricks). Having even smaller courts that can handle 4v4 (+/-1) in parks here and there all over the country would be an amazing petri dish plan for developing talent, ball control without parental interference or over-regimented activities by coaches. Just like basketball courts. 👍

I looked at the requirements for a mini-pitch and thought of a couple places in my current area. Looking into who I need to get into contact to start the conversation about converting one of them to a mini-pitch in the coming weeks!

This is a great idea to build the connection with the game among young children in our country, I still would like Filipo's FUTSAL idea implemented at some point soon, but this is a step in the right direction.

As a kid growing up in east Baltimore , we use to take the net down from the tennis court in Patterson Park play box soccer. (They had 14 courts and we put it back up when we were done.) Soccer was big in the area I grew up in.

Would like you and Flippo to go into depth on a video about Charles Barkley's comments on the mens team "sucking" last night. Seems to be a stigma that's sticking with the USMNT. Even though we're a top 15 in the world now. I mean, GGG sucks. But the team as a whole (sans some roster spots) doesn't suck.

Just checked the map and there are 0 in San Antonio and 3 in Austin. My poor city is the red-headed step child of soccer. MLS screwed us and now USSF is ignoring us as well. San Antonio is the 7th largest city in the US with a huge latino population. You’d think we would be a prime target. In stead all I see on the west side and south side is old tennis courts being converted into one-wall courts. A sport that guys learn at the local jail….

I sound crotchety… Pete, thanks for platforming this issue. With 2026 around the corner I feel this is a crucial turning point for the game in the US. I really hope that soccer can become as accessible as basketball by then.

very promising but it still sounds like there are too many barriers. dusk curfews, only way to play after school is to join a program (requiring a parent’s signed consent), etc. I really want to see what I had with basketball growing up. Open courts with lights that are just there and open till 10pm and organically grown pickup games. No coaches or paperwork whatsoever.
@chippievan

to be fair to the foundation, it seems they want the same thing. I just really want that free and organic experience that basketball has

This is exactly it, Chad. Still too many barriers, not enough of an open experience for young players. More pitches is always good but it doesn't do much if there's too many barriers to entry. Seems more like a good photo op and PR for the owners but that's about it.

I coach U8 and was wondering if you have some resources that speak to the "over coaching" issue that you mention in the video that would help me and others understand where the "line" of over coaching ends and starts or in some form speak to how coaching should look like in regards to this philosophy.

If these pitches don't come w/conditions, I fear much of the purpose is potentially lost due to "landowner" restrictions.

Yeah that was my big concern for the interview. Just a bunch of schools and park districts taking advantage of this program to get more infrastructure but that infrastructure not trickling down to the kids who need it.
@dark5niper1

@Alex Bard Fresno CA has no pitches. You play in the street or at a school. Soccer is very popular in the area. The city sucks. Passed messure P. many millions in taxes for our parks should be available. Maybe a place for your program to look into.
