this is a very different video than usual and i apologize if i come off a little nitpicky or mean! i went in and shared my pros and cons on his products (NOT HIM) and u can decide what u think urself :)
I agree that the first episode was quite boring but when I saw the last episode I understood why they put it in (I’m tried to say that by giving the least amount of spoilers as possible)
I loved them because he was literally just a guy. The average joe just talking about random crap from his childhood or something. Kinda lost the magic now that hes basically a celebrity but the videos are still enjoyable
What I really like about this review is that it’s not just going, ‘wow this RU-vidr has come a long way since they began’ you were actually honest with your thoughts on these products plus the series. I love odd1sout and all but again, it’s great to see you’re being more honest. Keep up the great work man!
im proud with how far he came but his content now feels really disassociated from his normal content. it’s almost guaranteed that someone who got famous from being relatable will become dissociated from their audience
I think that James probably had a bit of a more mature idea for his show but because of studio marketability netflix dumbed it down a lot. The video James made about making his show kind of implies something like that might have happened.
Yeah, but what about things like Dead End and stuff, Netflix is usually pretty good at adapting ideas into tv forms I just think the target demo is probably in the much younger age group and not for me
The show isn't for my target demographic but I can't deny the fact that the animation is way more advanced than his normal videos..seeing James with Lip sync was incredible.
I think the problem with James is that after a few years he started to notice that young kids were starting to watch his videos and so essentially changed his entire channel moving forward at that point in time to be more targeted towards kids instead of the teenagers and young adults that originally made up his fan base, which I think is definitely obvious through Oddballs. Great that he managed to get a show,it's an awesome opportunity but it just feels at this point like James has lost that relatability and laid back vibe he used to have in favour of selling out to become more family friendly and change his entire target demographic
I honestly dont think so, ive grown up with the channel for the past 5 years, and while I have noticed a noticeable change, its more good than bad. I personally like the higher animation quality.
hard to talk about things when you have non left. If he had a good story, he would share it. Most likely he ran out. He's still pretty young too. Dont expext him to have 2000 stories memorized without lying.
I feel that jaden and james expanded after their storytime animations, they do em’ occasionally but Jaiden expanded to the sides with gaming/colabs (mostly with alpharad) and James expanded upwards with the books, series and other stuff
Honestly, I really liked your points in this video. My main problem with James rn is the fact that it does feel a little corporate. I was a pretty big fan of him from like the early stuff, to his mid-career (2017, 2018 etc.). I used to love those animation storytellers or whatever, and back then they were pretty great. As soon as the books came out though, I knew it would all go downhill. And not to say it's bad exactly that he gets these opportunities, I just feel like it's a massive blow to the original fans. The old vids felt like genuine stories with James' iconic character, energetic commentary, and overall goofy but well-done atmosphere. Now the videos feel so corporate, and even forced. The videos are done by like fifty different animators, and the lines seem really cringe. It could be that I've gotten older, but there's plenty of other animators targeted to a younger audience that still hold up great today, like Jaiden Animations. It's really upsetting tbh. The show seems like it was for like Disney XD or Cartoon Network, and doesn't seem even that original. I rarely watch him anymore, and if I do it's just re-watching the older stuff I liked before he was as big as he is now. It just all feels like a business (which I guess is the whole point of a RU-vid channel) with the whole merch stuff shoved down my throat. The older videos don't have that, those have a nice, fun charm. These new ones feel like an advertisement. I'm open to all takes tho. If you enjoy the new stuff that's wonderful. Truly, don't let me stop you! This is just my view. Great video dude!
I think the main problem is us setting our expectations too high. We never know if something can turn out as we expected, like a RU-vidr making an actual good series for more mature audiences rather than younger ones, and the same can be said for things like the Mario movie as well. Maybe you'll end up with a good thing or a terrible thing, it all depends on expecting too much
Expectations too high? My expectations for the show were pretty low so if anything it exceeded my expectations And I don’t even think the show was that good
Well Smiling Friends was a creator show and it was amazing, so maybe these creators should cater to adult audiences with their shows more, or maybe just have a better sense of humor and write better
i set my expectations way to low and thought that the jokes and writing were for people younger than me despite me not being old at all,but there were still some funny scenes and enjoyed anyway
I think oddballs has very predictable plots for the episodes but the jokes really hit And I can’t help but laugh sometimes So I’m giving this show 7/10
This show is so fucking weird in my opinion but I still enjoy anyways even it’s looks a little bad cus the art style of the serie and the characters bruh 💀
Definitely agree with that rating. The best part had to do with what the plot was. Every single episode had him creating the conflict except the salesperson, the fly, and artificial grandma. Creates the toaster in 1, harms a bunch of people around him with his apps in 2, is extremely petty in 5 and 7 and in 7 instead of doing something simple especially when she gives him chances to talk, fakes crying to cheat in 6, starts doing something which while he isn’t completely responsible for the pillow fighting getting out of hand he still started it and did it in the first place in 8, number 10 again while it isn’t that terrible still dishonest to donate blood to get out of doing gym in 10, and finally 12 and by extension 4 he is the one who created the Dino nuggets and if you haven’t seen it spoilers: he is actually the guy who ruined food in the future by creating toasty causing echo to go back in time for processed food causing the conflict in 4. Honestly it’s an interesting premise and I think they can probably make a self victim role work pretty well at least assuming they fix it.
i'll be honest i'm giving it a 6/10, most of the jokes seem straight out of a crappy comic i would make in 2nd grade and some of the dialogue seems out of place or just flat out doesn't make much sense
I remember I once bought the second odd1sout book. And it was MISSING FIVE PAGES. It was in the section about conspiracy theories and pages 142-146 were completely missing?? I have no idea why or how, but I was blown away with how low quality that was. But otherwise, I’ve found that his other products are pretty alright. I have one of the plushes, and it’s actually surprisingly soft and huggable.
i actually bought the second odd1sout book too, and saw the missing pages. i was annoyed too but found out it was intentional because it was the in the conspiracy chapter. i 100% agree his merch is really a hit or miss, the shirts i bought a couple of years ago were a way bigger fit than i intended and the fabric felt super cheap, but the plushies feel like a squishmallow.
My biggest problem with Oddballs is that James *did not need to be in high school* 🙈 the only episode that needed it was “Emo like the Wolfstank” and even then you can easily change it. A lot of the scenarios would be inherently funny if James is in his early 20s - think SpongeBob or Regular Show, but school is just a very common setting for animated content so I know *why* they chose it 😔 I really enjoyed this review 💖 it’s pretty balanced in regards to the pros and cons of James’ brand/ merch, and none of it came off cynical- it just feels honest 👌
I feel like James has lost almost all relatability since becoming one of the biggest animation youtubers on the site, which is what drew me to his videos in the first place. True, he has definitely gone far in his career, but at a cost.
6:43 I'm surprised you were confused on how random the show was after just talking about how an ICarly/Drake and Josh writer made this. This is the same guy who approved spaghetti tacos and baby Spencer. I wouldn't expect nothing less.... 😂
Idk, the general idea for the show always rubbed me the wrong way and comes off as uncreative or even self-absorbed in some cases, but a lot of this is deflected in the way he can hide his actual self behind an avatar. Avatar or not, James essentially plays himself which is automatically (preemptively) a red flag for me personally since that’s how a lot of bad shows take form. Imagine there was a show called “Little Markiplier” where Mark plays himself going on whacky adventures. Idk, maybe I’m the crazy one, but I just feel a bit conflicted in the way James has pretty much turned a branch of his personality into a brand.
Storytime about James' second board game, cafe chaos. It was, as you could expect, total chaos (from a kickstarter point of view) First, the kickstarter happened during covid. I get that the delivery can get delayed a lot and I was willing to wait! I swear I did! Gotta say tho, it was from far the WORST kickstarter experience I ever had. I paid for the project in August. I got it at end of March. There was very few updates about what was going on and why it was getting delayed. I also got constant emails about buying more packs and merch. Way more than for every project I've seen. Now, THE WORST PART. In the ad, James says he developed the game himself. Sadly, this isn't the case. A month after getting the game, I noticed it was a RESKIN of another kickstarter game called "What The Food". Every card is the same. Some are copied almost word for word. Only the illustrations were changed. This broke me. I still can't believe I bought that :( The odd1sout is not a person. It's a brand.
I feel like the plushies are the best merchandise to come out of the whole Odd1sOut brand. the first book is pretty good, haven’t bought or read the second yet. the board game was kind of a mess. and Oddballs actually turned out A LOT better than i was expecting it to be. it wasn’t perfect, but not terrible either. I mean, I wasn’t expecting a dark and gritty mature series for adults that was also inexplicably exactly like the RU-vid videos, but something more in-line with what we got. if anything, I don’t think people should be mad at oddballs because, well, It’s rated TV-Y. It’s aimed at an even younger demographic than his actual videos are now. But overall: Book 1: 7/10 Plushies: 10/10 Board Game: 5/10 Oddballs: 8/10 (maybe a 9 tbh)
I've seen oddballs and actually enjoyed it,my expectations were low before it came out tho because it's target demographic is probably for people younger than me despite me not being that old at all,but Max definetly gives this show some sorts of humour and some scenes were just really funny so I give it a 7\10 I hope it improves in future episodes
@@MaximizedAnimation yeah but they know what they're doing, they made something that they love, not something forced by a company, even adult swim was on their side While oddballs is made by netflix,so uhh yeah,we all know netflix don't we
If you saw James's video on how he made a show you can see that he did want an overarching story, but he said that the network wanted to make changes :/
6:12 yk what i actually agree. Season one of cuphead was the worst season possible. The Seinfeld ending was great but season 2 and 3 had way more potential and they where actually entertaining. Season one was, and I quote “the weakest season ever (Bro this has nothing to do with the video)
I agree! I think it is amazing that the odd ones out series and mercy was rlly good! But it also feels lazy many times- I will still watch it bc it is only at its 12 episodes-
Good honest review May! my favorite episodes were Grandma's Boy (because of how wholesome James and GRANDMA were), Dead or Fly (that episode was intense!), and Behind Frenemy Lines (I like it when nice characters suppress their anger/be passive aggressive when someone is bothering them and James's angry facial expressions were gold in my opinion, also Max's Dad was pretty funny, my only con is Echo)
I literally agree with everything you said. I feel like the grandma episode is gonna be that one episode everyone hates, but I love it! It's just so wholesome, and I love plots involving artificial intelligence!
@@rosykindbunny1313 Agree, I too feel like Behind Frenemy Lines is also the episode people are not a fan of as well due to James contradicting himself with having no problem speaking his mind yet this episode he can't tell Echo that she's messing up the tree house, but I think the reason he is afraid to say anything is because since she's a guest, he probably feels the need to be polite and feels bad for telling Echo to clean up their tree house or like James said "Why should I tell someone who I am almost positive knows their wrong, that their in the wrong"
I feel like James built this like a Nickelodeon show or, take it in a different direction, Adventure Time. In Adventure Time, all you know in the beginning is that Jake's a dog and Finn's a human. It's not until later in the show that we learn how they met and the deeper details of the show like why Finn's the only human around, why the Ice King is the way he is, why Bonnie and Finn are better off as friends, etc. I feel like it's appropriate to link these two shows together because they have a similar idea in a few different ways. James actually mentions in a video talking about his process of making and pitching the show about how, in his show Bible, he already has the backstory in mind for the character James as well as other characters like Max. James explains how his character, outside of this town, is considered a weird kid. However, his parents move him to this town where they live with their experiments and the children of those experiments like Max. In this town, James is no longer weird like he was living outside of it. In this town, being like he is is normal. Like Adventure Time, it might take a whole lot of time for them to get to the point of these episodes, for it to build up in story and world building and filler for them to finally have a main point.
In my opinion odd balls is great, the characters, the animation ,and the stories were fun, the last episode left us with a huge cliffhanger, how james (SPOILER ALERT) created a toaster which will destroy the future
Won’t even lie, my dad bought the Moth board game and I took it on a family trip recently to try it out and by some miracle I got us all to play a board game again in years and we all had fun with it. So imo, that one was a win.
I can definitely tell that I’m not the target demographic for the show, but I still had some fun watching it. I really like the world of the show, kinda reminds me of Regular Show in how it’s basically just our world, but there’s just a bunch of other species living in it.
I find myself really agreeing with this review, nice job may! One thing i loved about this show though was that Mr. Sellers, (the salesman) was voiced by Ryan George. The host of Screen Rant's "Pitch Meeting".
This is the first video of you I watched. I liked it and you seem like you put effort in your videos. I subscribed. Also your avatar kinda reminds me of LS Mark's avatar
Only thing I hate is Echo, she needs to be punished. She lies to Max that he owes her money in the future, she tortures James, claiming that they don't do passive aggressive in the future, despite knowing what it is + that it was used in the past. And then destroys James Stuff after learning he was being passive aggressive. Not to mention her appearance episode, where she cuts in line because her machine brought her there. Atleast James gets consequences occasionally. He cheats and gets disqualified as an example
2:30 agreed, my dad bought it for me 2 or 3 years ago, it has been rotting in my desk ever since. i took the harry figuring and placed it on a shelf, cuz it looks "cool"
This video just reminded me that I still have the unopened “Can’t Catch Harry” board game sitting in the top shelf of my closet that I got for Christmas. 😳
Ngl the show is the same equivalent to a wedding, everyone looks so happy and proud but secretly everyone is either: 1. silently worried or feels pity for the couple because they know how bad it will end Or 2. Jealous and always try to bring up their marriage if ever talking to the couple after the wedding
Once he talked about the part about can catch Harry just being forgotten I realized oh crap The game's still in my closet because I never figured out how to play it
Glad this is not just another "ThIS is A YoUtubeR so it HAS tO Be GooD" You were actually honest with your thoughts and opnions instead of dodging the question and turning it into Odd1sout has came a long way video.
Wow, thank you for being honest, and your not rude. You also give them compliments and you also tell us good things! I really love James and his team, ( the odd1sout ) Thank you so much! You earned yourself a new subscriber ( also the toaster episode starts us for the MAYBE next season, since dumos is James and max since they crated toasty but it’s cool and your also correct! )
I miss when James used to make blogs and videos where he drew with his friends. I know he complains about them being ‘lazy’ and such, but I’d like to see some videos where we get to see his personality, without 20 other people being needed to make a video
most RU-vid animators are not actually animating. animation is making a drawing feel alive and making it move where most RU-vid animators' just make drawings
I used to love the odd1sout I don’t mind him anymore but now I feel like he’s just farming merch for money (literately check his newest video) i miss when he was just a dude telling stories about his life but now he’s just like”BUY MY MERCH WATCH MY NETFLIX SHOW PLAY MY MOBILE GAME” but I don’t hate him for this at the end of the day he’s just changed in a “unique” way.
One of the biggest problems I had with the show is how bad of a voice actor James is. He's surrounded by such colourful characters with wild personalities and he has no shift in his voice at all. I found it distracting especially considering that he is very energetic in his videos, but it seems his recordings for the show were just lazy first takes.
I think the second season is where the show will really pick up steam, like most shows that are meant to have multiple seasons, and I’m pretty excited for it. But also, yeah the show felt like it had the laziest writing ever. Almost like at some points he just forgot to edit it..? But I also find that that is the charm of the show, because it’s so random and unpredictable. That’s the main reason I kept watching. And also because the animations was the most beautiful thing ever.
RU-vidrs basically becoming celebrities and doing everything for money isn't even uncommon, that doesn't surprise me, but James whole channel and personality is showing that he isn't one of those RU-vidrs, that he is genuine, like you can usually tell right away if someone is a sellout or not, which is why I'm especially conflicted with all of the recent stuff he's been doing lately.
I know this will probably defeat the purpose of seeing the show for many but I have to say this, the Spanish dub of this show is FIRE I kinda changed the dub by accident and I thought a lot of it would sound terrible but wow, idk if they gave the dub people more liberty than in a big show but it’s genuinely one of the best dubbed things I’ve seen in a while, the vas do an amazing job and I think that the writing in Spanish is sometimes better with them doing some great localizations
well, it's a good episode and in the final episode its revealed that toasty becomes the emperor in the future so yeah, good episode and sets the overarching story. 7/10 episode.
His first book was basically just a ctrl+c - ctrl+v of his previous animation, his boardgame was basically just spoons, and his mobile game was basically just that one sumo wrestler gummy bear game, but ig whatever makes him that cayash
I like how honest you are. Politely honest=)Thank you =) His show was pretty nice, nothing too complicated. Such shows are needed because they are quite relaxing=)
I bought both of his books, and personally now that I look back I think I was technically conned, I could just watch all these stories on RU-vid for free, but I paid money, and I watched one episode of his oddballs show, I thought it’d be more for teens and young adults than towards kids. And I miss his old uploads when he’d just tell life stories. The publicity truly changed James. Also for a guy who uploaded a video saying he hates adds on mobile games he sure packed his game full of them, but I heard that was intentional. But that doesn’t make anything better intentional or not.
I can totally see what you mean when you meant when you said with the jokes being so obvious, in Pillow Fight Club when Max says he'll never spill the beans and then says I love beans, that would have been more funny if he didn't point out the joke
