Dusty Baker is returning to the World Series! The Astros manager joined MLB Tonight after Houston won the AL Pennant to talk about an important lesson he learned as a kid, oxtails, and so much more.
The Astros literally could not have picked a better person to guide them through the sh**storm that they were in. A great manager and an even better human being!
How can you not like Dusty Baker once you get to know him ? He’s the genuine article . Always positive and very knowledgeable about the game and on top of that he’s funny . That tree story had me rolling 😂
The tree story had me rolling too.. my own father taught me that same thing in that same situation! I miss my dad and I am glad we have dusty baker. Go astros!
"You get into trouble, you get out of trouble" Classic Dusty. He was a hero for taking the Astros job under the circumstances. I am another oldie who remembers Dusty as a player with the Dodgers. I would Like to see the Braves in the WS. It would give us two old-time lifers managing.
I'm old enough to remember Dusty Baker as a player for the Braves and Dodgers! Now he's got the chance to beat one of those clubs in the World Series! Storybook career!!!
I saw Dusty Baker play outfield for the Richmond Braves against the Tidewater Tides an International League AAA games both in 1970 and 1971 at the Mets affiliate ballpark. That was 50 years ago. He has been in baseball over 50 years !!! He deserves this and Astros are playing Atlanta Braves, he played for Atlanta back in late 60's and most sure was there watching Hank Aaron 715th as I was glued to TV in anticipation. Imagine being there !!
I know the Astros have great talent and have been in these huge playoff games for 5 years. They are down 3 starting pitchers JV, LMjr, and ZG. Hell of a job managing these games!
I used to work at a restaurant that Dusty would come into on occasion. I would always bug him with baseball talk and he was always very gracious and nice to talk shop with me, a genuinely nice guy and obviously a great baseball mind. How cool would it be to watch a game with him?
Man it’s so tough for me. I like dusty and guys like Altuve who have been proved innocent (not entirely, but he didn’t use the bangs), but the principal of a team that cheated and hardly got any repercussions and could win it all is something that irks me.
@@coleniebur9049 we have people running this country who cheat on a daily basis. Both parties. Corrupt beyond comprehension. Doesn’t make it right. Just stating a fact. Pete Rose got more hits than any man in the history of Major League Baseball. Should he be kept out of the hall of fame?
@@coleniebur9049 back in the day you got caught stealing sign you got hit at teased and they moved tf on bruh. Astros lost a manager, a gm, draft picks, paid fines, apologized publicly, got hit all year and booed coast to coast. Get over it. Hell yall act like the astros were the only ones doin this. This is some great baseball and we wasting our time on petty grudges that really didnt net them much.
@@coleniebur9049 "hardly got any repercussions"??? The astros were the ONLY team that got any repercussions. Despite it being common knowledge that they were not the only team that was cheating
Nothing like dusty baker ! Proud to say he’s coaching in my town and played on a team I followed as a kid growing up in Los Angeles prior to my military service ! Now texas is my home and Dusty Baker is a coach of all coaches ! Plus a stand up guy ! All around the epitome of the perfect coach ! I wasn’t some collard greens too dusty !!!!
Jim crane has said it’s basically guaranteed to come back next year which is good news but they should just give him a contract. You can tell the guys love him and he’s definitely a players coach not only that but he’s an amazing human and took in the astros after everything happened very few coaches would do that. As for Correa from the threshold we can see he’s obviously getting underpaid compared to some of his other team mates who had already established their name with them around the same time as Correa, so what is the difference? The difference is that altuve, bregman even McCullers have renewed contracts so they can give him money the question is 1)will it be the amount Correa wants and 2)are they willing to sign a long contract like Correa wants, since the Astros aren’t know for giving long contracts
@@ginilove16 Pretty sure the Astros would be okay paying $30M/year to Correa, but it’s the long contract that will cause issues. The best offer I’d imagine he would get would be 8 years for $240M or something like that
My son attended his baseball Academy and met Dusty. He is as genuine and unpretentious as it gets. One year I took my son to the SF Giants spring training and when we caught Dusty in the parking lot my son asked Dusty if the Academy was going to take place that year. Not only did he answer him he remembered who he was from him being at the camp. The next day we caught Dusty in the parking lot and my son asked Dusty if he was going to be there. Dusty looked at me and asked "Didn't I tell him this yesterday?" My son was ecstatic just to know that Dusty didn't forget him and I was enamored at his down-to-earth nature. He's one of a kind and there will never be another that comes even remotely close.😺
Crazy how yes, Astros winning it all would make this Houstonian's day but seeing Dusty with the title, that would just be the cherry on top. What a guy! He deserves this!!
I want to hate the Astros, but they ingeniously played the Dusty card and now I can’t. Underrated manager, and it would be nice to see the validation brought by a ring
70s Dodger fan, lived a few blocks away from Dodger Stadium and snuck in all the time. Best childhood memories was watching the Goats play: Dusty, Tommy John, Steve Garvey, Ron Cey, Davey Lopes, Steve Yeager, Rick Monday, Manny Mota, Reggie Smith 👏
@@kevinhorry4182 Wel said 👏He's too important to the game to be judged by who he coached for, even when he was w the Giants I never looked down on him but I'm not rooting for the Astros.. I'm rooting for Dusty.
Fun interview. Dusty's had a great long career as a player and manager. He was a very good MLB ballplayer. He's the right man for the Astros, too, a laid back 'players manager.'... Likable, smart, experienced on and off the field. And, as we see, a great conversationalist. Bravo.
Being a life long Dodger fan I hate the Astros just about as much as the Giants. But I can never hate Dusty he was a great player for the Dodgers and had always been a great manager wherever he went and I've allways wanted the best for him to succeed. But now I'm torn wanting him to win but also wanting the Astros to lose. That being said, whatever happens in the world series you will always be one of my favorite player/manager. And as the other comments have mentioned you would be a great person to have a beer with and simply hang out with. My deepest respect goes to you and all that you have accomplished.
I’m rooting for the Astros because of Dusty! He’s a goof but in a good way. He’s had a great career and deserves the top of the mountain. Cubs fan here and he got us within 5 outs of getting the big chance. Didn’t happen but A for effort, largely on his part!
I’ve been a Dusty fan ever since the Dodgers traded for him from the Braves. He was an outstanding player and a fine manager. I normally root for the National League team in the World Series but this year I’m pulling for the Astros because of Dusty.
I am so glad we got dusty. I mean, I admire him, and have gotten better at the game as a pitcher and hitter from listening to him and his wisdom. And he also isn’t afraid to talk about JESUS CHRIST OUR KING✝️✝️✝️
Dusty Baker is an amazing human being! We were lucky enough to wander into his winery in West Sacramento a couple years back on the very day he was waiting on the call to find out if he was being called down to manage the Astros. Truth- I had no idea who this guy was but someone else in my group did. He sat with us and we talked about everything under the sun, gardening, you name it. The most down-to-earth fellow you will ever meet. I felt honored to hang with him and really hoping the Astros win the Series this year!
Thats a great man. Its the only reason i come to the Astros defense when people say they still cheat. Dusty Baker is above reproach. Hes never been called a cheater and would never let a bunch of youngsters ruin a chance at the Hall of fame.
Dusty Baker is one of greatest of all-time ballplayers, managers, and people. When my brother Ron was playing, I would go to L.A. and work out on the field with the players. Ron would give me one of his uniforms, but my shoe size was bigger. So Dusty gave me a pair of his size 12's, the blue ones. I wore them out in college...I also remember when the Dodgers became the first team with 4-players hitting 30 home runs in a season. Steve Garvey, Reggie Smith, Ron Cey, and Dusty Baker, when Dusty homered in the last game, in his last at-bat, of the season, for his 30th. to join the other 3. Pretty damn cool.
Dusty Baker was brought to the Astros as someone following the scandal who was universally respected, with gravitas but could also relate to the players. He's done all that and more. That he and Brent Strom could also manage around the loss starting pitchers including a Hall of Famer Verlander and the decline of another possible Hall of Famer Grienke is a huge statement to how great of a skipper he is.
He loves to talk about baseball man I wish I could meet him one day and just hear all those stories he has about hank Aaron and him being with Barry bonds
I work at dodger stadium in 92 I met Dusty I walk up for an autograph he put arm around me and said how's your day going young brother we talk for 5 minutes but it felt like 30 minutes great man
You see there is a great manager who knows Baseball beyond cold numbers or overrated analytics. You gotta love Dusty Baker even if you are a Yankee or Red Sox. He is the best. Baseball needs people like him. Of course he outmaneuvered Cora, who is pretty good himself.... OLD SCHOOL WON THE SERIES.
As a Sox fan I couldn't be happier for Dusty. Might not like some of the guys on the roster, and definitely didn't want the series to end the way it did, but that guy is awesome and deserves all the credit he gets.
I wish this man was the Yankees manager I love him and it’s good to see a bright good black man as Manager of course I should not have to say specify that he’s black but there are so few
