Is there ANY USE for POINT & SHOOT cameras?

Back in the day, photo gear was still a bit expensive, so all I ever shot was point-and-shoots. I actually did own a Pentax Espio in the early 2000s. It was nice having a few extra features and auto focus. I started shooting film again this year. I'm again using cheap point-and-shoots that I've found at thrift stores. I find that shooting film forces me to slow down and really pay attention to composition. With B&W, it forces me to pay attention to lighting and tonality. I also enjoy the analog glitches that sometimes occur when shooting film. It gives character to the images, and can even complement the storytelling. I still shoot digital, but it's a completely different workflow. I'm always tinkering with the manual settings to make minor improvements to my shots. The way film has given me a renewed appreciation for how I compose images is something that I'll always enjoy.

That's a really lovely video, Ricardo! It fills my heart when I see a family coming along using photography together. Also, I have to consider that it looks like a preparation for the future of Ricardo's photography company. (Just kidding) But about the point and shoot, it makes a lot of sense what you have said, about just getting out there and having fun with photography. Most of the time we are all caught up with a bunch of technicalities that in the end just stress us more than makes us have fun with photography. The point-and-shoot with this approach is admirable. I had an olympus trip for a while and after this, yeah, I need to get a new one. It is a great camera and it gives all that you need: Just go and have fun taking pictures. Thank you for the reminder, brother!

We went on holiday recently, and, unfortunately, I wasn't able to fit any of my film gear in my shoulder bag. I ended up picking up an ilford XP2 disposable (I was quite amazed that a highstreet chemist in the UK still has them!). I haven't developed the roll yet, but it has made me think I should pick up a smaller pocketable film camera (thinking Olympus Pen or Trip). There's something oddly free'ing about having almost 0 controls. It's 100% composition.

Today, the point-n-shot camera is in a class with the nipple ring. It's popularity exists to declare its holder part of a tribe, be it hipster or whatever. I suspect that if you did a spot check at a party, half the cameras on hand wouldn't even be loaded with film. "Too expensive!" The practical function of the P-n-S camera has been subsumed into the phone camera. As a serious photographer for 30+ years, about 20 years ago, I bought my first P-n-S camera, thinking that I'd take it along to places and events where I'd normally take nothing. In fact, I did not do that, and the camera sits unused nearly all of the time. Sad? Not really, as my choice was a like-new Contax T2 for which paid $400. As I sit now to start liquidating a lifetime of cameras acquired, I can look on that "buy" as my 300% return on investment.
