The wing on the back of a FWD car is actually pretty important because since it doesn’t have all that weight in the back, and instead the weight is all in the front, the rear end tends to over correct on corners, so having downforce on a FWD car is definitely what you want
This happens on public roads at a speed limit of 70mph on a car that weights about 1-1.5 tonnes? I don’t know how my wife’s managed all this time without a big spoiler on her 900kg Citroen C1 when she throws it around on country lanes. Instead of spending £100 on a pointless spoiler to add weight to to tiny powerless hatchback you’re better off buying a sheet of 2mm thick plastic and making under trays to create a flat underbody and cutting out a section of the rear bumper, running the plastic upwards all the way to the edge of the cutout, creating a basic diffuser. It’ll be a much better use of your time and unlike a cheap £100 spoiler it’ll give you downforce without the added drag!

A tiny 2 inch spoiler on the roof edge might save you a cup of fuel, per tank, but that's all your hatchback needs, or has any use for. Furthermore, you'd be unloading the front - totally ridiculous and useless.

He is not a normal cop, he is specialized highway or motorway patrol officer specially trained to spot defects and modded cars. Normal cops would not know these things be lucky if they would know half of what he knows.
It's more of a case of if you hit someone or have a near miss, your aftermarket wing could make things worse if it has a sharp edge. The way he put it was wrong and let's face it most spoilers are smooth edged. We aren't in the 80s anymore.

It always makes me smile as a driver who's been motoring 37 years, when I see a 1 litre Corsa with a "spoiler" on the back (the size of a Vulcan wing) together with a rear exhaust the diameter of a saucer. Usually driven by a teenager called Aiden, Connor or Tyler.
We called the Corsa a Holden Barina here in Australia. To think that any "car enthusiast" would consider such a small car or anything with a 2 litre motor or smaller is ridiculous. Here the kids cruise around in their 3.6L or 5 litre V8 Commodores until they can afford a dual cab or 4x4.

@coover65 not too sure of the £/$Aus exchange rate but any 4.5lt petrol engined car in the UK costs four figures a year to tax. Our government pretend it's because they belch out more carbon. In fact this April they're introducing a tax on top of the tax if you buy a large expensive new car. Why we put up with it I have no idea, but we British are famous for being slack arsed and putting up with anything.

@@seshelbow336 you’re missing the point. You loose steering capability with rear down force which is not balanced though the car design. So a fiesta with downforce added at the rear will definitely loose steering capability at the front.
True, but that's basically all that wing is good for of on fwd street cars. It's just a pointy statue on the back of the car. Nothing less, nothing more. You wont get any performance, at least make sure that kids won't cut their fingers XD
@@the_skips a small one like a lip wing or the hanging one you might see on some hatchbacks is functional - for most FWD street cars that are fast enough to benefit from the downforce and/or airflow correction. No grip on the rear for decently fast FWD cars can also means spin outs for them. A run of the mill grocery getter shitbox won't need a wing much less a spoiler, however.

Anyone who's driven a car knows that the tail end gets light, since there's hardly any weight there, so to say a fwd car doesn't need a wing is inaccurate. This doesn't mean they look good though. IMO big wings look good on a full time attack spec car or a handful of other cars, not your bog standard fiesta.
Downforce on the rear of a FWD car means the front raises - as it will under power anyway...so steering gets light and affects handling. So the Seargeant is right.
Touring cars have front splitters that work in conjunction with a spoiler, to give all four wheels downforce. Just adding a rear wing to a FWD car will see no benefit unless you actually go with a full aero kit.
Try to fly plane without those rear wings and you will see what happens to you If you lose the vertical stabilizer. Your dead If you lose the horizontal stabilizer tho. Your also dead

Yes but they lift the front, which is why ideally you should fit a front splitter, otherwise you will just transfer the loss of grip from the back to the front.

Most of the fwd cars that have actual functional wings put them on because of the lack of weight in the rear and to get more balance, most aero worth a damn can also be set to less aggressive angles for little drag
Downforce isn't for putting power down. It's for grip around corners. Could decrease chance of over steer during turn in even on front wheel drive cars. The real argument should be if the driver is even good enough at driving to take advantage of the downforce. Most times they aren't and the wing is just for show. I always recommend people buy quality tires, maintain the car, and use the money you save from not buying useless mods towards driver training and track days. Will make you faster than any mod can.
Anyone with half a brain knows a proper set up spoiler on a fwd car will help keep the rear end in check in a fast bend this has been proven, if you think you want all the downforce on the front of a fwd car how do you think the rear end will stick at speed

Once you factor in the Weight at the front of the car, having a wing on the back would help keep the back end down improving handlings when I'm doing 9... I mean 60 down country lanes.
A wing on a fwd car is actaully a good thing (depending on car). It keeps the rear of the car from flying out. Saying a fwd car don"t need a spoiler/wing is like saying a rwd car don't need a front spliter/wing. A wing/spolier puts downforce on the back of a car and helps with grip, NO MATER THE DRIVETRAIN.

I am an engineer. Weight distribution for the average FWD car has a 70:30 split, that's front bias. Most of the weight at the front is because of all the drivetrain. Even more pronounced with iron block engines. 'Big wings' are beneficial to FWD cars. They essentially shift the centre of gravity towards the centre of the car amongst other things.... So please police, get back in your lane and stick to policing.
You're also missing the big point Skip, is the item "Type approved" for the vehicle it is on...if not.....game over. The effects of down force aren't going to play much at normal road speeds.
So that's most likely a spoiler technically assuming it also falls into the other guidelines. A spoiler follows the curvature of the car and doesn't extend past the body lines. A wing won't follow the contour of the car and will extend past the body lines. That's the guide I was always taught to tell the difference. Lots of manufacturers use the terms interchangeably but there is a difference between the two. Might not matter to the average person who bolts aero to their car but if you need to follow specs in order to race it absolutely does matter.

Unless you are driving at very high speed (formula one) then they are just useless. No one should be driving on public roads at a speed or in a manner that requires a spoiler!!!

Highway Code should be part of the driver's information pack kept in the vehicle when on the road available at all times & form part of the MoT test.
My car (front wheel drive) needs its spoiler to pop up starting at 80km/h to stop the back end from lifting too much, it even pops up further at 155km/h. They designed it this way because it is necessary. You are confusing wings (create downforce) and spoilers (disrupt airflow). And both have their uses.
@@dashcam_in_the_bush no mate, it comes up at 80 so that the purchaser sees the thing working they had to pay for while at legal speeds... it isnt needed until much higher speeds.
Fiesta ST comes with a spoiler. Downforce for a fwd car serves a purpose as well. It's how front wheel drive cars take turns better. You want weight on the back wheels so the rear doesn't break loose
he isn’t saying it would be illegal, he’s saying it’s just plain stupid, serves no purpose on a 110hp fwd touring and having it at eyeheight is going to make it dangerous to pedestrians dumb enough to not look where they are walking while you’re parked next to, for example, the sidewalk.
It depends if you've changed the aero on the front or not. Adding more downforce to the front will require you to add some to the back or you could end up with a vehicle that is very rear unstable at speed (legal track days).
I've watched many of these videos with this police officer in and he always gives good advice usualy on how not to to get fined or arrested for doing things in or to your car and at a time when most police officers are about as much use as chocolate kettle I think we should show a bit of gratitude 🙂. How about we start whining and discouraging literally everything? I'm not a fan of big spoilers on FWD cars, but I'm not gonna tell the owner don't do it or come up with bullshit excuses why are bad. This is true because I went to a car show and seen alot of people walk into a big metal spoiler near a trade stand and seen alot of people bump their arms or shoulders into it yes they are very sharp and are not weak made metals at all so I have to agree with Owen on this statement.
Downforce on the rear can actually be more helpful to FWD cars. Maybe not hatches, but longer cars like coupes, liftbacks, etc. The reason is that all of the weight - the engine, gearbox, and drivetrain - is in the front. Meaning these types of car can suffer lift off oversteer even worse than the equivalent AWD or RWD, where there is more weight on the rear tyres.
Firstly, very few rear wings actually generate meaningful downforce. Secondly, front wheel drive cars also benefit from improved rear grip, provided it doesn't unbalance it
Saw somewhere that people with j series v6 swapped civics use the big wings along with stiffened rear suspension to basically act as leverage and reduce the weight of the engine on the front wheels
A rear wheel drive car will oversteer when you give it too much throttle in the corner. A front wheel drive car might oversteer when you lift throttle in the corner. Which of these would be the bigger safety concern?
Even the factory puts spoilers on FWD cars. Why? Because hatchbacks tend to generate lift at the back and that can be dangerous at high speeds and their shape is not so aerodynamic so they generate turbulence and drag. The roofspoiler helps in both these cases. Eliminates lift and reduces drag. It is a useful thing to have on the car.
