Some more background info for those of you who are curious - The wing is 57" between the endplates and was run at a 1 degree angle of attack as measured from the flat underside of the wing. The splitter sticks out 3" beyond the profile of the front bumper as viewed from the top, so it is pretty substantial. And yes, both are strong enough that I can stand on them.

StudioVRM add in enough power on the rebuild to make up for the added drag. As well as tape gaps in the car lol

VERY well put together assessment of the application of wing/splitter combo. I especially appreciate the critical assessment of positive AND negative effects. Oil starvation is brutal and is easy to attain with sticky tires and higher G's. Thank you!

A good general video man! Well put together and great comparisons. Here's another negative of a splitter, going off track can result on it smashing into the radiator etc and ending the day

Learned the same lesson about oil sloshing at WGI. #4 Piston decided it was unhappy with the working conditions and left. Spectacularly. That's when I purchased a baffled oil pan that holds an extra quart of oil to boot. I just got the same wing your using, thanks to your recommendation. I'm going to fab my own end plates out of poly carb though, mostly because I hate the look of these. lol. Hope to meet you at the track!

Trying to learn about aero so i can install it on my car one day. Looks may be cool but it'll be even more cool knowing it is actually functioning (if done right). I wont be racing but i love how aero works, thx👍🏼

One of the best areo videos on RU-vid. You compared the same car, driver and tires…. You broke it down into slow corner and faster. And to end it talking about oil starvation brilliantly. Which is a huge problem in my world of BMWs…. Great content

Hi there, great video! Any pointers on stiffening the wing with the epoxy? I've got the same one and hate how flimsy it is. Is it as simple as drilling some holes and pouring it in? Thanks for the videos and your time!
@StudioVRM
@StudioVRM 3 года назад
Thanks! I detailed what I did on this page on this page here: studiovrm.net/racing-secrets-blog/how-to-make-a-cheap-wing-that-produces-downforce/ Hopefully that clarifies things a little bit. Basically I used a two-part polyurethane foam and poured it in a small amount at a time. The polyurethane is lighter than solid 2-part gel epoxies and it expands so you don't have to mix or use very much. My wing had cracks from previous use, so I sanded and filled those with a two part structural epoxy, similar to what you would find at your local hardware store.

Was the chassis setup identical? The balance of the car remained the same?
@StudioVRM
@StudioVRM 2 года назад
The chassis setup and alignment was identical. It actually felt more balanced and natural without the aero, because that's what the alignment and suspension was set up for. We made some alignment changes to the car since the video was made, and the car feels much better (and is even faster) now.

@sepg5084
@sepg5084 3 года назад
Catch can does nothing for oil starvation induced by lateral acceleration, it just catches the oil (among other stuff) from engine blow-by.

2 seconds total is great! I was blown away when I did a very similar setup on a much different car a few years ago and saw an average of ~5 seconds a lap faster at both VIR and PittRace. Cheap and maybe not the prettiest, but EFFECTIVE!

You can say that almost anything is useless on a street except for people-mover vehicles. Not all public roads are "streets".
@shredandenjoy7311
@shredandenjoy7311 5 месяцев назад
Buddy, you can't claim there's not much a difference through two low speed turns when you dropped .39s! That's the better part of a half second in just two turns, and not high speed turns either! It's also important to note that "gap" through low vs high speed sections isn't terribly indicative of much. A 1 second gap is going to visually be different from 60 to 90 to 120mph, despite not having actually gained or lost any ground on the trailing car.
@StudioVRM
@StudioVRM 5 месяцев назад
You're not wrong. This script was written with track day and DE drivers in mind, where people tend to be a little less concerned about a few tenths here or there. The gap through high speed turns was fun to illustrate because it looks so dramatic on video. That said, where you make up your time matter quite a bit in a wheel to wheel race. Most club racers can convert an advantage through high-speed corners into a position or two and hold it through the low-speed stuff. It's a little harder to do the other way around.
@shredandenjoy7311
@shredandenjoy7311 5 месяцев назад
Fair point! Still, for time attack folks, it's worth noting that is the kind of gains folks are pretty happy with!
