There has been a lot of noise lately about the "tube crisis" that is coming (or maybe already here?), but is this just fearmongering, or is there something to it? Are we in a tube crisis? Should we as tube amp players be concerned? Ryan talks to Coleen Fazio of Fazio Electric, Tim Marcus of Milkman Sound and Charles Henry of Silktone Amps to see what the amplifier experts have to say.

So tangentially on-topic here: What's your favorite tube of all time? I'm going EL84.

The el 84 seems is what I grew up with, peavey Bravo, Peavey classic line from the 80's and 90's. I was going to get into building the Marshall 18 watt clones about 20 years ago. I wasn't the only one with that idea.......

I don't know if there's a tube crisis or not, but what I can tell you is that I haven't seen a Line6 Helix in stock for several months now.

There is a global semi conductor shortage going on right now…Fractal released a brand new modeler(FM9),sold out in 20 minutes several months ago,they haven’t shipped a single unit since…..but nobody is panicking over that….On the consumer side,tubes last a very,very long time..I have amps running tubes that are 20 plus years old….Tubes aren’t going away…The supply chain disruptions have effected everything,but it will all resolve itself eventually….if there is a market,somebody will fill it…period…

Western Electric has plans to re-fit its Georgia plant for production of the more popular tubes. NOS tubes are getting very expensive but there's still some stock piles out there. I used to have a guy in Ukraine 🇺🇦 but I hope to reconnect as the situation resolves.

@@davetheserious677 just know, the one tube they make, the 300B, costs $1500 for a pair. I fully expect these to cost 10X as much as Russian tubes if they follow through. Sino, the Chinese company, apparently will start making tubes again as well. They shut down for a while during the COVID situation. They're much more affordable.

@JulianA-tr6pt
@JulianA-tr6pt 2 года назад
@@joeh858 I'm aware of China's problems as a whole, though I wouldn't go quite that far. It comes down to them likely being the only producer of tubes until Russia starts production again (if they do). If Western Electric made tubes that cost, even 2-3X as much as the Russian tubes, I'd love supporting an American production company, as opposed to China.

@@JulianA-tr6pt you are not aware if you would not go that far. cause in fact it is even worse than 40s germany if you just go by numbers. but i am glad to know you are willing to pay more for an american made product

There was a minute there where you couldn't find 12AX7's and the price shot up. But lately that is getting better. I can find stock and the prices are coming back down.

as an amp builder i was never really worried cuz i was like, ok im gonna start getting obscure radio tubes now that nobody uses and design new circuits around them. so business as usual haha. seriously tho, there are so MANY great sounding, plentiful, and cheap non mainstream radio tube types that will make amazing guitar amps and very few folks use 'em. i love 6v6's which where designed and used for radio originally. do you know how many 6v6 style variants where made for radios? theres no worries.
@JulianA-tr6pt
@JulianA-tr6pt 2 года назад
This is the route I'd go if I had to as well, but the fact is, they're NOS. They will run out. Series string tubes with stupid filament voltages would be annoying but funny to put in an amp.

It will hit hardest with working musicians first. The prices for tubes have skyrocketed just since the last time I retubed my amp. And as we've seen in other industries, some businesses will take the opportunity to price gouge, which will further drive up prices. The guys who pay $700 for boutique Tube Screamer clones, will have access to tubes for the foreseeable future, but I'm not holding out too much hope that I'll be able to afford them for many more retubes.

This past week I spent $35 on one Sovtek 12ax7. No Sovtek or Svetlana tubes.
@JulianA-tr6pt

Sovtek was my new production go-to. Couldn't imagine $35 for an AX7. At a hamfest probably 6 years ago I got a 1960s made in England, Blackburn Mullard 12AX7A for I think $4. It was produced for GE, with their logo on it. Don't tell anyone, but it sounds identical to every other 12AX7...

I read a fabulous book over the weekend called The Man Who Broke Capitalism all about Jack Welch's reign at General Electric that was very enlightening on this subject. Basically outlined how the shareholder value movement and corporate greed led to American companies outsourcing everything in pursuit of short-term quarterly profit targets and ultimately led to the downfall of American manufacturing (and product quality) while actually causing long-term damage to all the companies that were hailed for their profit numbers in the 80s & 90s (see GE)

Dr. Z Says no. If my crypto makes me a billionaire, I'll start a tube factory! People are over charging for them and that's a shame. Angus Young's amp tech says he goes through tubes every 3 or 4 shows. That's the real reason there is a shortage!
@blooeagle5118
@blooeagle5118 2 года назад
Here's my take; We live in a capitalist society. Capitalism thrives on people with the means, filling in a need to make a profit. SOMEONE, out of 355 million of us americans, some 35 million canadians, know how to make tubes. The best part is that they'll be hand crafted in the US and Canada.
@Stringjoy

Very good point
@BwanaTube
@BwanaTube 2 года назад
The problem isn't that no one knows how to make them. The tooling to produce them would be wildly cost prohibitive for a startup, and the environmental impacts (as in hazardous waste) mean US production would be very limited.

Every person I personally know who makes a living playing guitar doesn’t do it with their tube amps anymore. The repair & maintenance of modeling hardware is an interesting topic, but it won’t be a significant issue in the long run. And it won’t change the fact that more & more of the analog parts, tube & solid-state, are being driven out of production by the economics. Only the analog parts that directly support digital circuits have a mass production future. Sure, we’ll probably always have tube amps, but they’re already well on their way to the luxury hobbyist market. So, supplies of tubes will never be a crisis. At worst, it just helps accelerate the direction we’re already headed in.
