Probably the only reaction videos I actually enjoy, especially because you -actually- give feedback and knowledge on what's happening. Basically every other musician that "reacts" just names chords and scales as if it means something to the layperson and then goes like "yea pretty good." So, thank you for actually being a good reactionist!

The biggest insult to the 12 year old (and those in his audience) was the several people moving about to take their seats right in the middle of his performance. So disrespectful. Even children should know to wait to be seated until the performance is over once it has commenced. These were adults. Shame.

It’s the nature of the game 😊 a big element of learning to play recitals is building the ability to ignore distractions…I agree that it shouldn’t be the case though 😊
@WSBM
@WSBM 7 дней назад
@@mattoucas869 I'm willing to take that correction...but one would think that when a young performer trying to attempt a "level-up"/more complex piece publicly at a recital others would not want to be a distraction. But if this is a normal thing I totally stand corrected. My only experience with classical is going to a handful of symphonies and an opera or two (as well as stage plays) where the doors were closed during the performance and only opened when the curtain dropped between Acts.
@matticawood
@matticawood 7 дней назад
For a normal ticketed event you are correct (although someone’s phone going off or something like that does tend to happen) In this case though (although I could be wrong), I believe it’s part of a competition and they usually go on for hours throughout the day so people will get up and leave or come in mid performance (it’s still irritating for the player- but more common)
@WSBM
@WSBM 7 дней назад
@@matticawood oh, I see. Glad to know. Not knowing this was the case it felt so disrespectful...and to your earlier point, it teaches the performer to be able to get through the piece even with distractions...to stay focused on what they're doing. I'm guessing with such complex pieces and especially since the piano is sideways, the performers aren't trying to engage the audience while they're performing like say a violinist might?

Hey Matt I need some advise. I am a piano player and guitar player. I've been playing piano for about 2 years now. And I've been playing guitar for 1 year and 6 months. I play on a 61 key keyboard. I feel like I am not going anywhere with my piano progress. I can improvise with the minor blues scale I can play a couple pieces. My most impressive piece I can play is Can You Hear The Music from Oppenheimer. and asphyxia from Tokyo ghoul. I've covered plenty of songs. In terms of improvisation and being able to take my piano playing to the next level I feel like I am not going anywhere just stuck in the same spot.

I'm not Matt, but you could try to sing/hum your lead ideas first...you'll notice you'll need to take breaths/pauses, this is good because good leads do that...they leave space and communicate feelings and ideas just like speech. Once you've got your lead idea from the singing/humming, then try to replicate the idea on your piano/guitar. If you're not good at determining the notes you were singing/humming, you can download a tuner into your phone and sing into it and automatically see what pitches you were singing and transcribe the musical notes to paper. Your singing may be super simple at first, but that's good, so it will be easier for you to transcribe and your play ideas. As you progress, get more adventurous, cover more notes and cross octaves. Who knows what you will come up with?

Not to nitpick, but I noticed that the legato notes at 10:00 are actually not legato according to the oldest editions and many others. I think it's the safest to look at the first edition for judgement. Either way, excellent video with in-depth explanations, and wow they all are truly amazing. Bravi to both the performers and you!
@matticawood
@matticawood 7 дней назад
By all means, feel free to nitpick! I agree, I would always recommend using an urtext edition where possible…however for these videos, I don’t take my own advice and I tend to just quickly find one before watching the video and blindly trust that the editor won’t do anything too drastic 😂

hey matt, I was just wondering, what is the difference between the scale in a song, and the key of a song? thanks!
@stevesm2010
@stevesm2010 7 дней назад
In my (limited) understanding, they are the same thing. Perhaps Matt can confirm?
@matticawood
@matticawood 7 дней назад
They are actually very slightly different… A scale is a set of notes. A key tells us the set of notes (the scale) that are generally played throughout a piece. So a key shows us which scale a piece is going to be using, but there are also types scales that you wouldn’t see form a key. For example, the chromatic scale (all 12 notes) is a scale because it’s a set of notes, but it wouldn’t be the key of a piece. You might see a piece in the key of C major (so generally using a C major scale) but a section of the music might play a chromatic scale. 😊

Give me Liszt or give me death. Pretty impressive for a kid. That looked more like a rehearsal than a performance, so it's acceptable for people to be walking around. If it was a show all the people walking around would be annoying.

really nice video!!! It is so impressive how good the first guy played. I mean i´m 12 now and I could play this too, but not so expressive. I think playing like this is the hardest thing you have to master, when you´re learning the piano. I hope you will react to my video in the future and give me some feedback. Greetings from Germany (:
