Before I bought it, my '85 Mitsubishi Galant had been sitting since 2016. Let's get it over to the shop for some much needed maintenance! In today's video, mechanic Joe shows us what's wrong, what he fixed, and also drops a ton of knowledge about working on cars. I learned something, I think you will too.
Thanks again to Joe for bringing the knowledge and helping bring the Galant back from the dead. If you live in the Los Angeles area and need work done on your car, Joe can help you out. Hit up Sean's Auto Care in Van Nuys, CA: (310) 770-2720.
Also, new music! Thanks to Kia Orion for providing the dope tracks for this week's video. Find more of his music at his RU-vid channel here: • Video

I had a 1985 Mitsubishi Magna here in Australia. I believe the Magna was essentially the same vehicle as the Galant, but had a slightly wider body with a 2.6 Astron engine. They were a nice, smooth and comfortable car for their time.

always loved the elegant styling of this series of Galant. They were very popular here in New Zealand, being assembled here ntil about 1988. There are some unique versions too, like the wide-bodied Magna from Australia and a unique to New Zealand V3000, with a 3 litre V6. This model was used by the former Ministry of Transport for traffic policing duties. They were in classic black and white livery with a red federal light bar on top.

2.0l v6? Sounds interesting. Mazda had 1.8 and 2.0l v6's in their MX-3. 8k rpm terrors of the day :-) The Probe GT's 2.5l V6 is from the same V6 family. Same harneses and such, bolt in swap for the little cars.
@grunkohlaktionar7474
@grunkohlaktionar7474 3 года назад
@@pgtmr2713 yes it revs very high too. It’s a variant of the FTOs engine. Mitsubishi still holds the record for building the smallest V6 engine ever:D
@pgtmr2713
@pgtmr2713 3 года назад
@@grunkohlaktionar7474 Yeah, I looked it up. I didn't realize it was related to the 3000GT/Stealth V6. Makes sense though, that's how these companies save money. The Mazdas were solid engines, 250-300k miles. They were an engineering exercise of sorts, compact v6, Variable resonance intake, designed with sound in mind, forged cranks w/ cradle instead of mains caps. Mitsubishi distributor on them too. Although, that was a flaw :-D I've got several around here right now that don't work. I modified a later model distributor and use and 98 ECU.

I have one of those. 8200 rpm limiter on these engines. I also have other 7g galants. I'm currently building a 6G74 (3.5L V6) AWD swapped galant, it was originally FWD and 2.0L I4

I must be one of the few people who kinda enjoys tinkering with 80's electrical systems. finding the old proprietary diagnostic tools for cheap on ebay is kinda fun and reading the different service manuals for the different categories is interesting. I have an old Mitsubishi ECI Checker that tests the engine management systems on vehicles like the starion/conquest, Ram 50/Mighty Max, Mirage/Colt, etc. I went through all of the tests in the book on my Ram 50 and got the stock Mikuni dialed in by finding a weak o2 sensor and a bad throttle position sensor.

My very first car was a 1996 Mitsubishi Galant ES. My parents bought it for me as a graduation present when I was in high school in 2004. It had super low miles (40,000 miles). We were having intermittent problems with it, but I still loved that car. It died on my completely a year later, and I purchased a 2002 Galant in 2005 with 48,000 miles. I had my 02 galant until 2012. It had 182,000 trouble free miles on it before I gave it to my brother. The Galant is a great car. It’s too bad that it’s under appreciated because it really was a competitor to the Accord and Camry.

Good on you mate for saving this one! These were hugely popular here in Australia, where they were also built. Sold as the Mitsubishi Magna, Mitsubishi Australia also designed a wagon version, which was exported to Japan. The wagon I believe was only sold in Australia, New Zealand and some other smaller RHD markets.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these... In 1987, I almost purchased one. At the time, Mitsubishi was still trying to establish themselves and in North Carolina, dealers were about two hours away from me. If my dad had not been with me that day, I would have driven the Galant home. He reminded me that the car was very advanced technically (air suspension) that we didn't know much about the brand, and service would be some distance away. I wound up with a Camry, but I still hope to find a nice one of these one day...

I agree with Joe on EVERYTHING involving older cars, ESPECIALLY the electrical gremlins. That is the worse part of an older car to repair. My 1993 Buick Regal was extremely easy to work on, except for the dozen electrical gremlins it had. All of which were almost impossible to find without the help of OBD ll. Vacuum hoses were another pain in the ass 😂 so so many of them in older vehicles

Head up to Solvang, visit the Vintage Motorcycle Museum, etc. Make a day trip out of it. My friends & I pre-kids (and pre-pandemic) would take our 'vintage crapcans' (aka 'daily drivers b/c we were broke & thats all we could afford) from LA to Solvang, gas up, eat lunch, drool at some old Nortons & Moto Guzzis @ the museum, then hit Mulholland and visit the Rock Store on the way home. There was no comparison of the Jeep to the Montero! Luxury suspension front seat! Independent front suspension! Auto locking hubs! AC! And better fuel mileage! Ik they are still a common thing on the road today, but lately I feel like I'm seeing less 90's camry's compared to 5 years ago. Makes me feel like they are at that point where owners are beginning to dispose of them to get newer cars. (I also ask cause I own a '97 that i bought last year with 76,000 OG miles and i just have a weird liking for 90's camry's)

I'm a fan of the 1990s Camrys, especially the wagons. I don't see much love for them now, but I could see that growing in the coming years. They're kind of like this Galant, they have been treated as disposable. I wouldn't be surprised if 1990s Camrys get harder to find, I saw quite a few of them in my last trip to the junkyard.

Aunt had a new 86 Galant, black with the electronic suspension and steering wheel radio controls. I thought it was the coolest car ever.

These cars were rare enough in the U.S. when they were new, and about as rare as a McLaren today. I can't remember ever seeing one of these back then. I think I saw more Peugeot 505s!

A quick pass with some fine sandpaper (1000, 2000,) wet, over the headlights will clean up the darkness on the sealed beams without having to replace them.

How much did it cost to get your '85 Galant fixed? In 1985 I purchased new an "86 Galant. Great running car. Used to live in SoCal and would travel to Las Vegas with that car twice a year.

It would be cool to see you take a car like this, fix it up, and see if you can get it listed on Bring a Trailer or Cars and Bids!

As a previous auto tech I feel like an annoying thing for me on older cars was the corrosion involved. Rusty shit sucks. One thing breaks and then another thing attached to that brakes. Also brittle plastic like old light housings also will just crumble in your hands.

This was known as the Mitsubishi Galant Super Touring in Asia. It was absolutely a luxury car back in 1985 surpassing the Camry in style, space and luxury features. The Asian versions did had the same design but somewhat sharper looking without the quad front lights. It was just two large headlights like the 1992 Camry. Ping me if you are selling the car. I may be a serious buyer.

I would love to see you get a Chevette. My grandma used to drive one in the 80s-90s. I have so much nostalgia for the Chevette.. the Chevy Vette :-)

I'd rather see him get a Fiero which used some Chevette suspension parts and IIRC brake parts as well, until the 88 GT upgrade just as it got cancelled.
