This is from his Folsom Prison setlist - hence the men laughing and cheering! Cocaine Blues is an old song Johnny covered, so no, The Man In Black didn't shoot anyone! Great tune though - Johnny could put his spin on any song he sang - just one of the reasons he was and still is so legendary! May he Rest In Peace 🖤

Back in the old days Johnny was arrested several times for misdemeanors but never a felony and never went to prison. He definitely cared about all the incarcerated men, though, and that's why he played for them at Folsom Prison. He also had drug problems in his youth which he overcame with his faith.

Johnny was a man with faults. He related to the inmate and junkie. He was rebelliously honest. He laid the path for metal, punk, rap, and any other form of modern music that tells it like it is. My favorite of all time. The actual GOAT.

He uses the word "hack" in this live version at Folsom Prison because Hack was prison slang for a dirty guard

Johnny Cash was a legend and a pioneer, I remember when I was a kid watching the concert he put on for the prisoners, they had a ball as you can hear. @@AG-md1hl “ did cocaine , shot my bitch, on the run” Or a boy named sue, about him having a shitty name so he goes to find and kill his deadbeat dad. You can’t deny there is similarity in some of the content depending on the song. Yeah he tells a story but so does a lot of modern rap these days, it’s the sound and style they tell it in many people don’t like so all they hear is noise. Look at people like NF or Hopsin, they are actually way better at telling a story or conveying a feeling than people like cash ever were.

A little known fact about this particular recording. It happened at Folsom Prison. He was asked not to play it and he agreed to not play it. After he saw the way inmates were being treated with harsh conditions and dirty water etc, he basically said "fuck y'all I'm getting these men riled up" and played it anyways. Not quite sure how accurate the scene in the movie is about the warden walking out mad, but I can only imagine.

Johnny Cash is one of the best story tellers PERIOD!! Some made up, some true, some a bit of both. Do implore LFR Family to check out "The Man in Black" a song based on truth. Johnny had been torn between what the Gov't had been saying and what the youth of American was protesting about the Vietnam war. Cash went to talk to University Students and ask about their thoughts, beliefs, lives and motivations. When done, he went home and wrote The Man In Black. A few days later he performed it live for the first time (so new he had to have the lyrics in front of him) on the Johnny Cash Show. It was a perfect song for the time ( Vietnam, Racism, Protests, etc). The Song is just as important now, PLEASE check it out and do a reaction!!! Also wonder if Cash was alive, what he would think, write and make into a song for today? PEACE!

That's the great thing about Johnny Cash. He could take a fictional story about a man high on cocaine and booze and shot his woman dead, and make you believe it. Johnny struggled with his own addiction to drugs (Alcohol & Pills - Amphetamines & Barbiturates), and I think that really contributed to how he delivered the song.
@StanSwan
@StanSwan 3 года назад
It was common to put cocaine in a glass and mix it with whisky back in the day. A lot of musicians and called it breakfast. Johnny was an addict most of his adult life. His wife June turned him around. He never went to prison but ended up in jail overnight a couple times for public intoxication. He just had an old soul and cared about everyone but mostly the poor. A great flawed man.

@@StanSwan My math skills are fine. SRV was drinking at 5 and an alcoholic by 8 by his own admission. Cocaine was prescribed by Dr at early age and that got him on his road to addiction. He drank all of his life until 4 years before he died. Johnny was clean most of his midlife to old age. I was simply commenting and agreeing with your fact that cocaine in whiskey was very common. You can get your ass off your shoulders, fucking idiot. I was agreeing with you. Stupid is as stupid does, and you are drowning in it.

Johnny Cash wrote most of his songs based on life. Joaquin Phoenix did a spot on impression in the feature filn Walk the line. Useless facts: Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis Carl Perkins and Cash was once under the same record label Sun studios in Memphis. There is a recording where they all jam together called the million dollar quartet.

Jonny was shooting coke with a needle. Intravenous (IV) use of cocaine is particularly risky because it can quickly lead to addiction. There are several harmful consequences associated with shooting cocaine, including:1 Aggression. Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat). Auditory hallucinations. Coma. Confusion. Depression. Erratic behavior. Malnutrition. Paranoia. Seizures. Sexual dysfunction. Suicidal behavior or thoughts.

As God fearing as he was, and very religious LOL, Johnny was an outlaw badass back when he was young. He did have a well documented use of amphetamines. He was once busted at the Mexican border with his guitar case full of Mexican black Market go fast in pill form. Though because he was Johnny Cash, it was dropped from a felony to a misdemeanor and he got off after 1 or 2 days in county and probation. He sang the song "Cocain Blues" live from Folsom prison" I think he done it to piss off the guards, but the inmates absolutely loved it. He'll, they loved Johnny Cash period. He was known back then for giving free concerts to inmates in different prisons. His manager thought he was nuts to want to record a live album at Folsom prison.Johnny had power back then and actually made an album, and a documentary (available on RU-vid) and it wound up being a huge record for him. Fortunately, the song isn't a true story, at least for Johnny. I'm not sure about the names mentioned in the song though.

They lived a completly crazy life. Hes friend stole an helikopter when he was in the army and land on johnny cash alley. He ran out with a shot gun and like wtf. He didbt shoot anyone. But he performed Both at prison in Vietnam ( Vietnam made him change oppinion totally, he thought they where fighting for something good, he saw the men and felt bad for a long time, after that he was helping minirities, native american indians, poor People) This is about a man called Willy lee, murdering hes girlfriend who was cheating. He got 99 years prison on San quentin Was arrested in Mexico. Jerry Lee Lewis, johnny cash, elvis presley, Carl perkins was on tour Also wanda Jackson, marvin Rain water, sonny James, Haha when they stopped in Canada girls running to then pulled up their dresses... My relative watched them. They where high, drunk everyday, stole cars, stole tv from motels. And fought eachother to clean the air 🤣 Wanda performed in high heels and a dress that where shocking than, red lipstipck I think hes the only one perform in War and prison? He used the Word bit#h in a song. Probably first to do that :) My relative told me alot of crazy things Jerry Lee Lewis turned hes piono on fire, try to kill hes techer, shot hes guitarist, was accused of severel murderers. Wylor jennings was on a tour, played by shooter jennings, and in some way related to struggle jennings. Hank williams was a real outlaw Johnny cash was arrested once in Mexico smuggling drugs, And weared black so that line Goes to cash aswell. Think he was arrested like 10 Times. The reason he sings at folsom prison was when he was doing army, airfirce they watched a movie called "inside folsom prison", witch lead to writing folsom prison blues. I heard so many crazy storys, my relative knew him so think i remember right what i wrote. I lsugh when he tells it because had no idea first like they where that crazy. But offcourse its not fun, addiction, depression, death in family etc But its moore to the situations i lsugh.... At that time aswell, its like they all where like eminem our simular and really didnt give a f. I I Also think he and june played in prisons alot But stopped when i riot Broke out. I know Cocaine blues isnt hes song originally ( he started wrote when he was 12) Also walk the line i think june wrote and gave it to her Sister. Than cash liked it so much so got it And The Record recorded in jail was divided in 2 acts, was alot of songs...
