For years we have been sharpening with water stones. We've tried many many different methods of knife sharpening and there was none that we considered as a good alternative... untill now! We finally found somethings that sharpens quick and gives us results to cheer about! This is the Ken Union WorkSharp with Blade Grinder Attachement! This thing is a beast! this is definitely our go to sharpening tool if we want to put on a good edge quick!

Just an extra note we did not mention: The Blade grinding attachment comes with an angle guide we personally did not use. This is very handy for people who have trouble getting their angles right. As keeping the angle is pretty much the same as you would on water stones we did not need to use it. Just saying its there! oh, and love you all

@Gangster of Love you have to get the ken onion addition. The standard one will not work. I have seen the unit for in the $150 range. The grinder attachment is around $80 (comes with the belts). Get a strop with the needed compound and a ceramic rod. You will be around $300 for everything depending on your needs and wants. Prices will very a bit. I sharpen CPM M4 and CPM 3V all the time. But I only use the grinder for seriously dull blades or edge change/damage. Like I removed a chipped edge from one of my Elmax blades. If the edge is good and just needs some touch up then I use a ceramic rod then strop. For serious edge work I do keep a cup of water next to me and dip the blade if it is getting to warm. I then dry it and continue working. Don't run a wet blade on it. Tip I learned from bark river. You can use the finer belts for touch up work but I just use a ceramic rod and strop on my convex edges. Takes literally a min. Not worth pulling the out the grinder. Hope this helps

@@tacticalcenter8658 they got some special belts cbn and diamond or heck you could just turn it into a power strop with diamond polishing compounds granted diamond polishing to a mirror finish is a slow as heck process all depends what your looking for on a gizmo like that on that. note I've seen tons of knives sharpened on sets of 6" cardboard buffing wheels same kinda thing going on

@@ericwhite3526 diamonds are not good on belts. They have diamond belts that are only for ceramic knives. I have them and I was able to sharpen a knife in d2 61hrc. And one other knife after that and then it was toast. Cbn is super expensive and I don't think they have belts with cbn unless it has been recently. Cbn is good with belts. just make sure you got plenty of belts, I have only ever ground Rex-121 on 2 knives on a 2"x72" belt grinder... Rex-121 eats belts ! you dont need diamond, but Rex-121 does consume meterials alot more than even M4 or S110V (2 steels that require a fair amount of work to get sharp, atleast in my experience. I haven't made blades out of everything. my favorite steel to work with is the very plain and boring 1095 or if you want stainless S35VN isnt bad at all) the 2 Rex-121 knives both Rockwelled at 70.2 & 70.4 respectively, I doubt I'll ever do another one, the price is way high and Rex-121 does chip easier that than the carbon and/or stainless steels around the 59-61 HRC mark. the toughest stuff to grind I think is actually worth working with is Bohler K390... that stuff is a pain to grind, but holds an edge like nobodys business and has decent toughness.
@halfbaked3373

Yes it‘s true. My long used waterstones didn‘t see the light since I got this machine (with attachment). Easy to use. Great control even for folders with thumb pins. Low speed, low heat, no stains. Fun use with absolute serious results in minimum time. No complaintsat all, but be careful with the tip - , practicing with a cheap knife is recommended. Stropping belts are available, they work, but i do it old fashioned way, it‘s more contemplative and even more useful for a mirror polish, i think. All in all an astonishing alternative to good (and expensive) waterstones, but keep in mind that you need replacement belts sometimes. Results shown in the video are absolutely reproducible. As said, I don‘t use my waterstones any more. Trust DBK.

Got this machine for over 4 years now and it's my on the go sharpening tool when having power. For off grid camping I've made an adapter to use the attachment belts ( or any other) for urgent blade intervention when having no power. Some tips. run every 20-30 strokes a belt cleaning rubber for a longer belt life, also remove often grinding dust with a damp cloth for the attachment and compressed air on the machine.

@Riyame
@Riyame 3 года назад
I love my blade grinding attachment but it has a few quirks. One is that on the drive gear/wheel there is a rubber 0-ring that grabs the belt to rotate it. You can see the black mark in the middle of the belt at 2:56 that is caused by this. This can break with use or if it gets old and dry. Some black electrical tape wrapped around the wheel will work just as well and is much easier to find than a tiny o-ring. There are also cloth or leather stropping belts that you can get to put a final crazy edge on blades. As you go up higher in the grits you use less and less pressure to the point where the blade weight itself is enough.
@peterspaltman
@peterspaltman 3 года назад
Thank you DBK, i have been sharpening all knives on my 1x30 beltgrinder with grits 120/240/800/1500 and finishing with buffing compound on a MDF wheel and cloth to get amazing results fast and consistant. I still hear alot of people asking me wether the steel doesn't get ruined by overheating, this video should give people more confidence in the electric sharpening capabilities. P.s. i would grind a true scandi on waterstones as well

I have one and I really don't regret buying it. I use it for knives and for other projects, it is in essence small belt grinder with flat wall and angle adjustments. Work Sharp kicks a$$ at everything they make. They're owned by the same group that makes Drill Doctor for resharpening twist drill bits - I've had one of those for around 14yrs now - paid for itself several times. I've got a Ken Onion edition work sharp but not the blade grinder attachment featured here - have had that for 5yrs now... it's incredible - I put green honing compound on the superfine belt and strop with it...yeah...sharp! Last year I bought a Work Sharp WS3000 for sharpening woodworking tools (chisels and plane blades) - that thing is legendary. And most recently I bought the Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener which... frankly...is astonishing...well worth the money ($28) I can go from no edge at all to popping hair off rather quickly. Love my worksharp ken onion with blade attachment,, excellent results, so easy to keep perfect, highly recommend. Get their strop belt, makes phenomenal finish. Use a jewelers loope to ensure edge is fully perfect. When reworking edges, you will go through the roughest belts at higher rates than finer. Epic sharpness. Not very good for scandi though, unless you want convexed sides. Some limitations with certain grips/handles when handle is on left side of belt. Using it in the basic config, without the blade attachment, its ultra easy to mess up tips, beware. Got a hapstone for scandis, but even with the expensive diamond plates, even with coarse grits, it can take up to 8 hours for one knife. Wish there was a better way for scandis.

I think it is great but it does have the potential to scratch the blade specially if it is another type of grind or if it has a coating so if you care about the appearance of your knife then that's something to consider. The other thing is that if you don't follow the instructions properly you can end up rounding the tip.

@@zleggitt1989 Dmt diamond stones is very old technology. You need to try the naniwa diamond stones. M4 is not that hard to sharpen. Try sharpening REX121 with the work sharp. You'll go through a set of belts for 2 knives. And forget about reprofiling.

Having the whole Ken onion setup i will say its great for kitchen knives but on my 2 pocket knifes (microtech socom and a benchmade mini bugout) I enjoy my spyderco stones better

Have you guys tried the Brother F005 knife? Seems like a great knife for the price!

I also have this Ken Onion sharpener with the blade grinder attachment and I’m very happy with its speed and performance for its price. 👍 ... But just be careful with sharpening some of the high end “super steels” out there. I tried sharpening one of my Spyderco Maxamet knives and completely wore out a nearly brand new set of of belts with just that one blade (& wasn’t even completed with that set). It was only about a $20 learning replacement mistake but still annoying to have to wait for a new set to arrive in the mail. Otherwise with most other steels, this is a great machine and use it pretty often over my much slower (but more precise) Wicked Sharp sharpener.

It was a bit difficult to find all needed attachments on the website. Can you change the link so we can get your exact setup?

I knew you were going to have to use a belt after trying to sharpen that Rex 121 blade last week.

You guys should make a guide on how to turn a v edge into a convex edge

@dbk if you really want to get it scary sharp get a leather strop belt for it (they make them for the blade grinder attachment) then put the bark river .5 micron (32,000 grit) cbn emulsion on it. You will achieve wicked edges lol.

KME with convex rod is what I use (Mike Stewart of BRK recommends this) but I'd pick this if that wasn't available.

I have one too, it's a great machine with great results but I advise everyone to always use a dust mask, even outside. The fine dust from the sanding belts is harmful for your lungs! Thank you for the nice clip 😊

Some steels like 3V temper at 1050f so it’s gonna be hard to ruin a temper, but still possible of course!

You guys should give the Swedish Tormek grinder a go. Its a watercooled wheelstone. Cost a bit more but build to last.

@Timur Oezer it is v, almost concave, but if its a downside is personal taste. Its sharper the convex but not as strong, but you can have a more Blunt angle and still get it sharp and strong. With Good Steel i prefer concave, on a Axe or softer Steel i would prefer convex

Watch out using that sharpener! There is a learning curve. It is really easy to grind your tip off! The guide also leaves scratches on the flats of your knives! I just reviewed several sharpener and this was my 3rd favorite and I use it on knives that I don't care about. I would not use it on one of my custom knives that I make!

Glad you guys like it, Ive had mine for about a year and im pretty happy. 2 tips for anyone thinking about getting one, 1: read the instructions first and 2: when one of the belts wears out put some stropping compound on it and use it as a stropping belt.
