If you fancy taking part in some of the Zoom Chat nights, you can over on my Patreon, I'll be scheduling the December ones soon. They're A LOT of fun. www.patreon.com/jushawk
My Mother growled whenever I played a new rock album, 'Not AC/DC again!' One time my Father replied, 'It's Whitesnake, dear. Not every rock band is AC/DC.' Bless their hearts.
When I was a teenager back in the seventies whatever I put on my turntable was "The screaming abdabs" according to my father whether it was Purple,Zeppelin,Sabbath,Yes or Floyd lol.
Parents are funny when it comes to their kid's music. I remember leaving the house to go see David Gilmour on a solo tour in the early to mid 80's, when my mom stopped me and asked "who are you going to see?". I replied, "you wouldn't know". She then said, "I might". I told her "David Gilmour". Her response, "that's nice". Funny thing is that the same is probably true now between my generation (late boomers) and Gen Z! Life repeats itself, doesn't it!
Man, I wish things were that wholesome again. People always make fun of me and say things like, “so you want to go back to the 50s?” No, how about the 90s?
Dirty Honey kicks ass. It's not the most original, but it fills a huge void in good-time guitar driven rock done expertly and with balls and passion. The more recent stuff is great, too.
I saw Dirty Honey here in Orlando a few months ago. They were absolutely fantastic. John Notto is a killer guitar player. They recently toured Europe playing with Rival Sons. That show would be about as good as it gets for current rock.
I’m a huge Dirty Honey fan from the beginning. I’ve seen them live three times now, all fantastic, high-energy shows! Marc has the right amount of charisma to draw you in, without ever coming off as unapproachable and ‘rock royalty elitist.’ He’s often in the audience now when he sings “Another Last Time,” which is just a fun, sexy, old school sounding good time…held my hand and sang right to me in September! This band makes me feel young again (I’m 51), and really that’s what I want in my music these days!💃🏻
@@afterdinnercreations936 Absolutely... Sadder still, it becomes formulaic and gets ran into the ground. Look at mainstream "rock" music today... It's the same crap as the Nickelback, Shinedown, Puddle of Mudd" crap that was on the radio when I was in high school 20 years ago... Worse still, look at "country" music today. It's basically the same as that 2000's "booty rock" mixed with 20 year old hip hop... Just generic fodder for the lowest common denominator... People keep buying it and eating it up like chicken nuggets from McDonald's... They suck, but it's cheap, easy, convenient, and requires the least amount if effort to produce, sell, and consume by all parties involved.
@@ChrsGuit yes, but music becomes 'mainstream' because it's popular and in demand, and because of that it's reproduced, and therefore recognisable (and perhaps boring to musicians). All music is formulaic - time signatures and keys determine that. Also, guitars and the broader music track are only part of song. Plenty of brilliant songs have very simple music, with impactful lyrics. A good songs blends all elements, often each very simple in their own right.
@@sampreece3900 REAL rock music does exist in the modern day. However, there's WAY too much pop music on the chart to the point where rock cannot even get a foot in the Hot 100 door. It has NEVER been this bad before...EVER.
Intro riff: AC/DC “Rocknroll Ain’t Noise Pollution.” 2nd chord change: Clapton “if I could change the world.” Riff rock bit: Aerosmith “Love in an Elevator” (verse riff)
I wonder why they're treated different to Greta Van Fleet. Feels like they're not held as suseptable to the same criticisms (Not that I think either of them should be)
@@CasualWatcher279 think it’s because you can hear the influences very clearly, and that’s great, but GVF straight rip off Led Zep shamelessly and then claim that Aerosmith is their biggest influence.
Ive seen Dirty Honey twice now (first time supporting Rival Sons, second time headlining). Brilliant live. Loved this breakdown of the influences. Their entire vibe is like a late 80s LA scene rock. If they were out 30 yeara ago they would have possibly been kicking it with the big boys then. Definitely recommend them live if you can see them.
Not just a little, his entire vocal performance is reminiscent of many Slaughter tunes. The lower register in the verses, going into almost an exact mimic of what Mark does in choruses. I’m not hearing as much 70’s vocal stylings as many commentators seem to be. It seems they’re connecting what’s happening with the instrumentation and the vocal in a way that’s cohesive to their sensibilities. It makes sense, but to my ear is not nearly as accurate as what you’re picking up.
I absolutely love Dirty Honey! They’re very reminiscent to 80’s rock. Such talented musicians. They play and sound amazing! Can’t wait to see them live in November!🤘🎶
My favorite hard rock band to come around in a long time. I tend to describe them to others in terms of early Aerosmith, GnR, and AC/DC. Caught them twice opening for Guns this year and excited to catch them in their own in February.
Justin, you have a really, really great ear. I'm so freaking envious. There are uncountable numbers of kids in uncountable garages and basements making rock music. Rock is *not* dead. My impression of Dirty Honey is that they're great musicians with a wide range of influences. The first thing I thought of when I heard them is that there is a definite 'Southern Boogie' thing going on. The lyrics are not the strong point at this time, but the chops are there.
Newer band with younger performers who like playing new music with homage to the ones who made rock music to begin with. Younger generations will emulate 70s and 80s guitar rock for many decades to come.
Yah. I listen to his lovely wit while working in the art studio and every now and then…he inspires me to put down the paintbrush and pick up the acoustic, which I deeply appreciate!
And my apologies to Dirty Honey… I should have led with, they are awesome and… Rival Sons is the best band out there and I can’t wait for Darkfighter coming out 3/10/23!! That said… Marc, John, Justin, and Corey from DH are surely kicking ass.
Will definitely be checking out more DH. Thanks for the introduction, Justin. And yes, Rival Sons. Would love to see your reaction to their Electric Man video. Great groove and some really impressive vocal talents.
Morrison, Plant, Weiland, Cornell and others. If it ain't broke.... As Justin says though, it doesn't mean new stuff can't exist too, without people looking down their noses. If you like it, listen to it.
Man 90’s we’re the best, grunge was such unique good rock. There hasn’t been a single band since that’s done that sound the way all these bands are doing 70’s and 80’s
Just saw these guys in a small 300ish venue in Melbourne recently, have been listening to them for about 2 years now, and they where absolutely brilliant. Sound amazing live and the most exciting rock band I have heard in many years. Very humble easy going guys and hope they find big things, their music is good enough for it. A lot of older "big rock stars" say rock is dead, only because they don't go looking for it, it is out there!!!
I'm 62. The Kinks will always be my all-time favorite band. I saw them live when I was ten years old. I discovered The Struts from watching Justin's videos and they are one of my current favorite bands; also The Mavericks.
I’m 63… (the obligatory mention of age). I love, love, love Dirty Honey! I’ve seen them live twice, opening for Alter Bridge.🤘🏼🤘🏼 These guys are so young, and this is off their first album. Imagine how good they will be years from now! When I’m Gone is a banger- Rolling 7’s is my least favorite song, but I still love them! ❤
Nothing against you but no rock band appealing to 63 years olds is ever going to blow up and be popular with the youth of today. I mean if your grandkids havent heard of them then theres probably a reason why.
No, unfortunately I haven't seen them... yet, but I sure this'll change. I'm from Ukraine and currently in the army, so there's no chance to visit any show for now.
Thanks Justin. Saw Dirty Honey support Black Crowes a month ago. And I agree with your, as ever piercing, erudite analysis. I am quite nostalgic for what they are using as 'building blocks' and at first thought they were a bit of a pastiche band, but in the end they won me over and I think they are building something of stand-alone value. Cheers for your brilliant insightful content Justin.
They are pretty good. I really hear slaughter in his vocal style. I heard them before but playing in dive bars for 20 years you hear this style all the time, and it’s easy nostalgia music nothing new or creative. For what i like.
I can honestly watch you pull apart songs and tinker on the guitar all day. Also, your hair is 🔥lately. An artist I'd love to hear your thoughts on is Fantastic Negrito. I've only just found him and he melts my face off.
Meh. Sounds like a boring pastiche of old music, or cover band trying to just squeak past copyrights. I love all kinds of old music and new music but this is just the Hard Rock Cafe of bands. Lots of nostalgia, no substance.
Really like Dirty Honey but their stuff can sound repetitive. Other than TD, a band I’ve been super digging into recently is Rival Sons. I believe Rival Sons are one of the best rock bands in the modern era and possibly ever. Would love to see a video on them, cheers Jussy ❤️
Hell yeah! I saw them open for Alter Bridge in 2019 and I've been a Dirty Honey fan since. I've seen them twice now since, they opened for The Black Crowes and then they headlined. Marc's voice live is incredible! 🤘🎶
I owe you a dept of gratitude Justin, I'd never heard of this band before, less than 12h later I've got tickets to see them live next month 👍 Just up my street this band, awesome stuff. Hope you had a lovely Christmas and best wishes for the new year.
I was a teenager in the 70's and 80's and grew up, in my opinion, during the best time for music. I had all but given up on music years ago then stumbled into these guys recently. I will admit, they give me hope that rock isn't dead. Vocals are amazing.
Feeling the chill alittle bit Justin? Not heard of Dirty Honey before, sounds abit like "Change The World" by Clapton but defo loving the music they playing great video as always mate 😎
Unlike most "old folks" my age, I don't want new versions of the old stuff. While this ticks all the Rockn'Roll boxes, give me something newer and more original even if it doesn't "rock" in these ways, especially the lyrics. They'll be more of these bands down the pipe, and those who didn't get the first wave need this, clearly.
Shout out to to Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown!! Another great rock and roll band that’s been out there for a while but killing it with every record!! Saw them open for Rival Sons back in early 2013 when Rival Sons was on the Head Down tour.
TB and The Shakedown were great live. I’ve seen them open for Blackberry Smoke three times. They haven’t been the same since bassist Noah Denny left the band a few years ago. They seem stuck and have become derivative of themselves and only one band can do that well - AC DC
Dirty Honey sounds like a 70's band that I have always liked ...Great White! I have been listening to DH for over a year now and look forward to more music produced by them :)
They are an absolute treat to listen to. Went and saw them in London last year after Slash mentioned them in an interview or something of the sort. Music is fantastic both in studio and on stage. Show is electrifying and next weekend they're coming to England again! Gonna add two more shows on my belt!
Absolutely, massive Aerosmith riffage, love in an elevator especially but lacking in the nod and wink humour, lyrically that Steve Tyler had then although that would not be considered the done thing in this day and age, anyhoo, well done again sir Hawkins , heading for the half a million subscribers and deserverably so 👏
Discovered these guys last year and can’t get enough of them. They have enough musically to be different from their predecessors but Justin is right. If they want staying power they need to diversify lyrically or musically. Another Last Time and Rolling Sevens are my favourites. California Dreaming is also good.

I mean ... of course is rock dead, but there is still great rock music out there and nice new rock bands. But the times are over for rock to be fresh, shocking, unpleasant. Meanwhile rock is not only dead it is "dad". It is Music dads listen to, the youth has other music now that is their soundtrack for rebelling against the old guys or to feel at home and it is good like that. I love rock and i hope it has a proper revival one day but for now it is a tamed beast.
Well, if you listen and love 70s-80s rock, and that's what inspires you, chances are ypu gonna write music in that style. IMO there's nothing wrong with it especially since they capture the vibe and the essentials of that era musocally whilst not knocking anybody off. Has nothing to do with liking or disliking surprises. Good groove, good riffs, great vocals. Good is good wether it has been done before or not
Hey Justin, long time watcher first time commenter.. I saw these guys opening up for Rival Sons last year, they were great.. Might I suggest a review of Rival Sons new song Nobody Wants To Die.. its an absolute banger
The Darkness and many rock and punk bands have moved the genre of rock forward. Take an hour or two to listen to the last The Darkness album and you'll see that the writing, production, and musicianship is amazing. While also being raw and meaningful. Rock will never die. Or at least I hope it doesnt. P.S. The band featured reminds me more of a mashup of AC/DC, The Black Crowes, and Axle Rose. And I suppose you could throw in a bit of Led Zep.
That’s the mix I hear, plus a smattering of Aerosmith and Poison. It just seemed like I knew the song immediately, which isn’t a bad thing. I think rock is too challenging for people these days. The trend is for simple, morose and/or childish, same-ish sounding stuff that feeds their depression and keeps them low, rather than music that celebrates life. I’m hoping we turn the corner on that pretty soon.
If you want to listen to bands that don’t try to bring back the sound of the 70’s here are a few recommendations: Royal Blood Highly Suspect Cleopatrick Dead Poet Society Badflower Nothing But Thieves Death From Above 1979 Tigercub The Blue Stones Biffy Clyro Wolf Alice The Amazons
I think they sound great, really dig their sound, regardless of whether they sound familiar or not. As the great EVH once said "If it sounds good, it is good!!", never heard a better perspective on what sounds good than that!!
Love the channel Justin! Great insights and very inspiring. Would love to see you do an episode on a Biffy Clyro song - don’t think you’ve covered them yet (apologises if you have) Interested to hear your thoughts
I am one of the fortunate to have been a kid in the seventies. Little did we know that the music on our FM stations in the mid to late years of that decade, was from a few years prior. All of these amazing "new" bands had been making records long before they got heavy airplay and sold out arenas. The foundation of rock - there are only so many riffs and melodies and everything is somewhat derivative of what came before. Every now and then an artist conjures up a recipe of notes, arrangements, musicianship, imagination ...combines just the right elements to produce something fresh and timeless. Dirty Honey has a good sound but nothing new or enduring in this tune.
Rather than coming from a place of authenticity a lot of new 'Rock' bands that hit mainstream success seem to be cosplaying another era's concept of rock.
@@sebbach3747 You’re right, it’s actually more like Firehouse with some of the Jackyl southerness sprinkled on top. That’s it. Thanks for helping nailing it. Jesus.
Their new album, Can't Find The Brakes, is great. I've added 7 songs of that album to my Spotify playlist, which is impressive. Usually I like 3 maybe 4 songs when I hear a new album and that's it.
These guys are amazing! After a few really bad years and feeling like I lost myself a bit, Dirty Honey took me right back to what got me into music in the first place. I saw them twice this year (download and then on your with Rival Sons) and I'm planning to see them again in January when they come back to the UK. It's worth mentioning that they are still unsigned (by choice) and are really making waves. I absolutely recommend them. Both their albums are well worth a listen.
Hey Justin, would you like to maybe do a video about The Pretty Reckless? Especially songs like "Devil's Back" or "25" or "Heaven Knows"? If we're talking about a great modern rock band, then there's no better really. They at least have their own style, unlike this one here which sounds like every other southern rock band that ever was.
The thing is, they're not so single handed, are they? Don't get me wrong, they're amazing, but to paint them as trailblazers is to downplay some of the work bands like Rival Sons, Goodbye June, Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown - heck, even the dreaded Greta Van Fleet, amongst many many others - are doing
@Lucas Lucena fantastic points, can't disagree with any of them I just feel like dirty honey are a cut above Have you had the pleasure of listening to their cover of Last Child? It's outstanding in my opinion
Love what you were saying about rock being stuck in a 50-year old template and how many will dismiss any deviation. Personally I've been exploring and loving new artists that don't stay stuck in the past. (LOVE Dirty Honey btw so this isn't a diss). One in particular I've been really digging lately is Palaye Royale, who are a little 70s glam and rock but then have their own style.
