My memory of this airstrip is one of the scariest flights of my life. The year, 1978. A Talair “tri-lander”, just the pilot and me (fare paying passenger) flying Lae-HKN. Weather was awful so didn’t land Kandrian and went IFR to HKN. We could hear an Airnugini F27 above us telling ATC they were aborting their 2nd attempt at landing at HKN but the guy flying the Trilander said he’d get me to HKN. We were flying IFR at about 1500’ and flew directly over the ADF beacon at HKN and continued north over water and the pilot started circling and asked me to tell him when I could see the ocean. We saw water at about 500’, he then headed south again over Stettin Bay saw mill and a managed a tight left turn over the northern end of the runway and a perfect landing. It was my first experience of a total white-out. In the heavy weather over the island I had no idea which way was up. Some history re: Kandrian. During WWII the Japanese would hide ships in the natural harbour created by the islands. They couldn’t be seen by passing allied shipping or low flying aircraft.

I finally got to sit in a real Kodiak at an airshow yesterday. I didn't realize how huge these airplanes actually are. The tires were 2" bigger than the tires on my pickup. I want twelve of them.

I don't know one end of an aircraft from bacon and eggs, but I cannot stop watching these vids. In PNG, I flew Pt Moresby to Kokoda in clear conditions thankfully, but cockpit alarms going off along the way were very unsettling as their volume and abrasiveness made them sound like critical danger alerts. Very glad to learn that most of these buzzers are reminders or notifications etc. Thanks MBP, keep up the excellent work.

It was about 1974 or 75 that we flew from Kundiawa to Lae and refueled , a 402 operated by TAL. Our next stop was at Kandrain before going on into Rabaul., We all didn't leave the potholeed airstrip, but the publician did come and ask if we had weight / space for a body that needed to go to Rabaul. The deceased person was wrapped and was being kept in the freezer. We polietly declined.

You taught a great lesson for all of us at the very beginning of you vid. "Had to go around because of unstable airspeed." I've been flying 91 for a little while and I often run into new or newer pilots who consider a GA a failure on their part. I consider it a major success. Much better to fly a GA than to stack up the aircraft or worse. Nice job and great vid. Keep em coming.

From the OBS Wikipedia page (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Course_deviation_indicator) for those who didn't know (like me!): "When used with a VOR or VORTAC, the instrument can be referred to as an "omni bearing indicator" ("OBI").[2] The courseline is selected by turning an "omni bearing selector" or "OBS" knob usually located in the lower left of the indicator. It then shows the number of degrees deviation between the aircraft's current position and the "radial" line emanating from the signal source at the given bearing. This can be used to find and follow the desired radial. Deflection is 10° deviation at full scale (each side), with each dot on the CDI representing 2°. (See Using a VOR for usage during flight.)"
@brodricj3023
@brodricj3023 3 года назад
In these more modern times a VOR ground station is not required. The GPS derived position is used and the OBS deviation and TO/FROM is calculated with reference to the active waypoint in the GPS.

Well, I don't know about the airfield you were talking about but my grandfather was in New Guinea at some place called Hollandia. He wasn't in combat but was one of the head logistics officers for the Army Aircorps. He was on every major island campaign after the US captured it. When he wasn't doing that the Army put him in charge of down Airmen reports. Figuring out whether they were most likely Kia, Mia and where it happened and getting that info to the Airmens CO. He was on every major island airfield in the Pacific including Iwo and Tinien after he transfered to the 14th Airforce. According to what he told my dad, he said he got to see the B29 Boxcar take off for Nagasaki. I got all of this info second hand from my dad and my grandfather's military records. Grandfather died in 75 when I was two.

Hi Ryan, a quick little story...My friend, Ken, the pilot, used to take me flying in his 1946 Ercoupe. I live on Cape Cod, I don't know if you are familiar with it. It's in MA. Anyway, we used to fly 500 feet above the water along the beaches that surrounded Cape Cod. He put the bubble top down and it was so much fun. People on the beach would wave at us. Sadly, he died in an airplane crash in 1997 (we dated in the 70's). He was either getting his instructor's license or another license in a twin engine and his instructor turned off both engines instead of one. It was right after takeoff and the plane went down and both of them were killed.

Hello Ryan! I have to say that I envy you. Why? For the reason that I love to fly; even as a kid, my first flight to Kansas City, Kansas, as amazing!!(I loved and remember that flight, a lot of turbulence, but I thought of rocking to Chuck Berry, lol) I have had dreams although, as a kid through my twenties that I was a bird, taking off from the ground to the top of a tree. Then I would have a dream when I was stretched out on the pavement and started to fly inches off the ground( nervous and shaky at first) then flying to the trees. And even just a few years ago( my CPU of my pc burnt out, so no pc anymore. Everything by phone). I had flight simulator, flying to Egypt, France, Britain, Boston. I even watch as many flight videos as I can. Yes, your vids are exciting. Ok all the best Hay tell the people of Papua New Guinea that this NewYorker said "Hello" Shaun of NYC 🗽🗽
