It amazes me how all of these "traditional Irish dishes" are never served in Ireland. Corned beef hash is something I have never seen in Ireland. Bacon, cabbage and mash would be the closest actual dish.
I know. None of these are hardly Irish pub food. Where have they got their information from. Corn beef hash is not Irish, Shepherd’s pie is made with lamb mince not beef, and chicken curry is not a traditional Irish pub food. More likely to be served in an English pub as curry is probably England’s favourite dish now.
Irish man here. Regular visitor to NYC (Best city in the world!) Loved this video! Thanks for posting! All fantastic places. Love The Westbury! Never realised McSorelys added to their menu
Two weeks ago, I went to The Westbury on 38th St and had the BEST Sheperd’s Pie I’ve had in a while with a pint of Guinness. All the bartenders are Irish. Highly recommend it!
Should have also gone to Molly's Shebeen at 22nd and 3rd Ave in Gramercy. Among other things, they have an outstanding burger. Also their Irish spice bag is mad tasty as well. And yes, American Irish food is different as noted by others.
Lived in Dublin for 10 years, can say i never saw any of these in any typical Irish restaurant or pub, most typical thing i would say is the irish breakfast to try, everything else is either, English, Indian or American
You didn’t mention the BEST Irish bar(best bar in the world in 2016) The Dead Rabbit!!!!! The food is superb, it was the best Thanksgiving dinner I’ve ever had and the prices are beyond reasonable. Check it out!!!!
Yet another great video Jon along with your guest. Loved all the history that you just brought out and I can’t believe that the McManus pub still has pay phones🤪 and those tater tats looked extremely delicious🍽️!
Good Friday Morning My Friend That Hot dog Looks Really Amazing Merry Christmas To You And Your Family Always With Love Ms British Gray From Tampa Florida Blessings ")
All that food looked great BUT, the food shown/served is 'traditional' Irish-American food, and not Irish food found in a pub in Ireland. Firstly, corned beef & cabbage isn't served outside of tourist spots around Temple Bar. What's missing: A Fry (Irish Fry, Irish Breakfast or, simply a Fry as its known throughout the Isles) Bangers & Mash Rasher or, sausage batty Soda bread w/butter Colcannon Boxty Coddle Lamb or beef stew seafood, particularly shellfish, salmon and cod; Ireland is an island after all....
Can't wait to watch the movie, but I know it will have me booking at ticket to Ireland again, haha. Thanks for sharing these, lots of great places to visit. Loved seeing the "snug" at the first place. Hope you and the fam have a wonderful holiday season- enjoy that little baby boy!
Love McManus pub. Little trivia for you the exterior is featured in a Seinfeld episode. I would also highly recommend Mollys at 287 3rd Avenue for a traditional Irish pub. I’ve been going there since the 1970’s when I was a kid and it’s the real deal.
Oddly enough, last night I crossed the street in the rain to eat a Shepherd’s Pie at The Blasket. Best Irish pub food in my neighborhood. I don’t even drink alcohol but I usually go once or twice a month for the food alone. Then this vid gets released… odd.
That food looks amazing, especially the Reuben! I’ve had some really great meals at the Playwright pubs, too. Definitely adding these spots to my ever-growing list! Great video, Jon & Evan!
Shepherds pie is ALWAYS made with ground lamb, NOT beef!! i dont know what it is about the US and their Shepherds pies and beef!! the clue is in the name, SHEPHERDS!!!!! if its made with beef its a Cottage pie!
Nice work as usual Jon. You do these videos so well. I am half Irish and actual have had two family members from Ireland arrive today for Christmas with us in England and it was good to see this twist to the video. Although hardly any of that food is what is served in Irish Pubs. I don’t know what they are thinking. Corn Beef Hash is not an Irish dish and for god sake why do American places call it Shepherds Pie when it is made with beef. Beef is Cottage Pie in UK/Ireland and Europe and Shepherds (think of them looking after their sheep) is made with Lamb mince. Also that is proper bacon used not that fatty streaky bacon in the sandwich. UK and Ireland Bacon is much leaner than streaky bacon which is just fat. Not a lot of streaky bacon is eaten here. Curry is definitely not an Irish Pub food either. But that how the US have chosen to interpret Irish food. No big deal, but just don’t call it authentic. Cabbage and potatoes are though and bread. It was still good to see some of these places you ate at in NYC. Would definitely suit some expats in the city and I am sure they do very well. No Guinness was tried either although I bet it’s rubbish because all Guinness outside of Ireland is not the same. It really isn’t. Thanks for doing this video. Your style is so on point.
MERRY CHRISTMAS HERE BE BARR!!! Little bit late but I wanted make you my best wishes to you and your family!!! I like having lunch or some beer in IRISH PUB when I am in NYC; usually I have good salmon and rice drinking a blonde beer at O'DONOGHUE'S pub in TIMES SQUARE....;)
This is one of my favorite offerings from you Jon. Absolutely loved it and you for showing me places I definitely would go to if I could. Top O the morning to you. 🍻🍀
Awesome video as always, but why are there way more negative comments than usual? That’s not the norm for any of Jon’s stuff. And it’s certainly not his fault, the video was fantastic. I get people being all bent out of shape about “shepherds pie being made with lamb, not beef”, but this is the US, not Ireland, and we use beef for the exact same reason the Irish use lamb. It’s what’s cheap and readily available. If we included lamb, it would cost way more than it would in Ireland (or at least compared to the value of shepherds pie when it was originally created). Anyone that has a problem with that needs to take it up with the pubs that use beef instead of lamb - which is basically 99% of them in the US.
No such thing as Irish Chicken Curry. Ye get Curry Chips in the chipper on the way home from the pub alright. It's the UK that has the Indian influence. Love your content Jon as always but you were sold a pup on that one😂
That Corned Beef Hash looked Heavenly! I SO loved this meal from when I was such a little guy my Mom used to tell me that I thought it was called “Corby Pash” because that’s how little Ed used to insist on having for dinner just about every other day, apparently…
Jon I loved everything about this! Cottage/Shepherd Pie is probably my top 3 comfort dishes, and that looked perfect! A lot of your insight reminded me of when I lived in England. Stay safe and warm with this crap weather, and Merry Christmas!
The rice, fries and curry sauce looks so good! I love Irish Pubs. There's one in my city, but there isn't much on the menu for vegetarians other than a veggie burger, fries and a caesar salad.
Great theme for a video. Some outstanding content, pubs looked great. When my wife and I went to NY last in Oct, for a quick pint or two after arriving at night we went to the Long Hall in Midtown. Big thing which reminded me of Ireland was it was a shop bar so had groceries to buy at the back. Takes me right back to the best bars in Ireland, get a pint then some biscuits and few bags of taytos for back home 😂
Jon,the looks of the bars/pubs as they call it here in Ireland definitely looks like from here. The dishes kinda different though, corned beef especially. Mostly bacon, black & white pudding, egg, hasbrown, toast, beans, crisp. Well i may say, that's adaptation from evironment really. Nevertheless it's a very good content!
OMG that film The Banshees of Innisheran had to be one of the most depressing films of the year,I know it was supposed to be a dark comedy but honestly I came out and felt like crap and sadly there was no cheery Irish pub to drown my sorrows.Talking as someone who has Irish Jewish heritage and love a traditional Irish pub. Those places looked amazing though and some awesome history behind them too, could have done with some of that food to console myself after watching that depressing film ! sorry for those who loved it and I know apparently many did but not me..far too depressing, needed a rom com that day not a film about a man who chose to cut off his digits and killed mans beloved donkey !! Obviously they're your sponsors so I'll say no more...lol !!
I love you, but these are all (with the exception of the corned beef hash) standard British pub food. Can we also stop it with the mislabelled cottage pie as shepherd's pie please?
@@emmajohnson3291 I get your point that it’s not “traditional”, but shepherds pie is made with beef in the US for the exact same reason it’s made with lamb in Ireland. It’s cheap and readily available.
@Ninja Tony you're missing the point. The clue is in the name- shepherd. If you make it with beef it becomes a cottage pie. So yes, you're doing it wrong.
Thw film Iwas not Ireland, but a small Island on the coast, to be really honest nit alot of Irish eat that, and that's is nit even a good cornbeef hash either
Aww you didn't go to my go to Pub, Playwright Celtic Pub West 49th Street, we hadn't heard of it just happened upon it walking around, that has been some of our best finds just walking around, I had the Rib Eye Steak not Irish food although they have Irish food on the menu, it was the best Rib Eye I've ever had better than Rib Eye I've had at expensive steak restaurants, the mashed potatoes were out of this world, I forget the other side I had but I remember it was good too, we ate on the roof they have an open air roof, their staircase to the roof is crazy really narrow and it goes up and up like what seems forever
Last time there my wife had the Guinness battered fish and chips. As good as if not better than any fish and chips we normally eat when home in England
Ugh....nothing I hate more than seeing another "Irish" food video, is seeing an infomercial interspersed amongst the stops within the video. Curry? Maybe you see "curry sauce" on chips here and there but definitely not Irish. Corned beef was from the NYC "Five Points" Jewish Butcher Shops. What we know as "Corned Beef" is not like beef in Ireland. Nothing Irish about it. It was never served in Ireland.
