I'm so conflicted. I love these type of videos because I'm genuinely interested and I really want dive deeper as I have devices that fair better with CRT's rather then LEDs. The reality for someone like me is that the more these type of videos come out, the more further my reach is of getting one. Either because the prices jump within a month or practically speaking, these things end up costing way more then I should be spending on a technology I don't need but I want to enjoy at a high level. At least audio, regardless of what an audiophile says, you can at least taste great audio in the $70-$200 range where too many retro enthusiasts will just take out their life savings and encourage sellers to charge way more then needed. But that could just be a more poor man's perception of the situation.
You don't need a pvm or rgb to experience great image quality for retro games. Name brand CRTs from the 90s onward are fantastic. IMO a nice consumer CRT with S-video competes with a pvm with rgb. You wouldn't think so but it's true.
You can get great performance out of a free consumer CRT. But I agree, the prices are out of control. That might change once we slip into another recession.
@@skylardickson5201 I guess it's one of those things where I've heard so many great things and I wanted to see a PVM/BVM in person for myself. My current CRT has a flat panel, so the geometry is a little off BUT I will say the color is great. Maybe I'm 100% fine where I'm at but it's just that lingering curiosity to see what upgrading MIGHT offer.
@@SiincereARC PVMs are really freaking nice, they DO look amazing, but its up to you if you think the cost is worth it. Most people who own PVMs are super lucky though, sometimes they are given away because they are thought to be broken, other times they are sold at absurdly low prices for whatever random reason. So if you want one, scour the internet and see if you are lucky lol
I recently ordered a cap kit from Savon Pat for my Sony 1953MD. One of the RGB inputs starting looking a bit off, but the Line B set still looks great. Looking forward to the adventure of swapping caps.
Just got my 20M4E delivered, only hooked it up for 15 mins just to see her running, played a few mins of Evangelion full-frame 4:3, you were not kidding were you, it is incredible looking, I have a few amazing 21" PCM's like the LaCie Blue IV 22 and E530, but this is my first PVM, and I underestimated just how good they look, you really do get 240p but with incredible PCM like fidelity, even just the menu looked good lol, canny wait to hook my MiSTer up to it, I really want to get hold of a flyback for it so I can make sure she works for years to come without issue, the tube is immaculate, I canny wait to play some Saturn and N64 games on the MiSTer in the nicest 240p I have ever seen before, it actually looks better than my LaCie Blue IV 22 does with 240p when set to 240p120Hz super-res mode (direct-video), I can also use MiSTerCast to cast anything from my gaming rig in 240p, I got it for 500 squid btw, seeing prices that it goes for, it got a good deal I think, tis the most I have spent on a CRT, as the most before was 350 on a ViewSonic G220F.
Hey Steve, thanks so much for the informative content. Do you know of a reliable source for replacements of IC601,602 and Q501? The STR-M6524 on my 20M4A has completely exploded 😅
Hi Steeve, in your humble opinion, I know you have witness a lot of pro monitor PVM/BVM , I have the chance to grab a BVM-D20, would this be a great jump from a consumer FV310?
Hey Steve I heard that you have a discord server but I don’t know how to join it. Also the PVM I recently ordered has some color issues that I don’t know how to solve. Would you be able to help me out? By the way this monitor hasn’t arrived since I ordered it yet but it should in a few days
this is a bit of an odd question but. can you mode a 15Khz crt with a 31Khz Jungle chip. I'm wanting a small CRT. I'm thinking 9inch would be a good size for my desk but i'd only be able to get a TV crt at 9inch. so i wouldn't be able to get over 60hz for pc
Please do not focus on the wattage these monitors need. Their are modern things that people use daily, for hours (like CPU's+GPU's), that use 200-800 watts, by themselves!
@@RetroTechUSA It's just, it is a big marketing move, by modern display companies, to be energy efficient, which there is nothing wrong with, but these people first spread lies about C.R.T.'s harmful radiation (it is non-ionizing, it is not harmful). It hurt the C.R.T. market, but when people started walking up to the fact it is not as harmful as reported, then marketers focused on L.C.D's energy efficiency, compared to C.R.T.'s. All if this would not be so bad, if C.R.T.'s were not objectively superior to L.C.D.'s. ...and people complaining about C.R.T.'s energy consumption, while gaming on computer rigs that consume waaay more power. ...I am not against energy consumption... Anything below the power consumption of a computer gaming rig, is not a concern to me, and to most other people.
Am I sitting on a goldmine? I have two 20M4U's from 2000 sitting in a studio that never get used and in my office, an old tv control room, I have a 14M40, two 1351Q's and a PV-8220. They all work fine, they just haven't been powered up for awhile.
