i bought one of these primarily based on your video and can i just say it sounds incredible. so smooth and clean. everything you would expect in a kick and more
Neighbours will HATE this one module ... I was about to buy a Basimilus, but now I think I'll get this first. I wanted a module to do typical static tradition 808 kick drums but also tuned trap 808 basslines. But also to be able to do house and techno kicks as needed.
Any sufficiently advanced DivKid patch is indistinguishable from magic. What a walk-through, thanks for all the inspiration. AND the module sounds incredible. You are an ultra kick!
Hi Robert that's great to hear thank you. There's a massive amount of videos if you're wanting to check out certain functions. I try to make demos that show functions and creative/musical uses so hopefully people take the ideas and apply them to other modules and gear too. All the best for your modular journey!
Dear DivKid, thank you very much for this video. I’ve bought that module, tried it out intensively and at the end sold in again. For the style of my music it wasn’t the right one. Never really got a kick drum out of it which I was happy with. Now I’ve just got the Portal Drum from Rabid Elephant and will check that one out. Sounds promising.
Hello, thanks for the supportive comment much appreciated. Sorry to hear the module wasn't for you, I hope the Portal helps you find the kick sounds you're after. Do you have kicks in other formats you like to use?
nowhere did I tell you that you need this module. It's a demo, if it sounds and functions as you'd like check it out, if you don't like then that's also good by me. I don't want people to waste time, energy or money so the video can be used to decide something is NOT for you sometimes too. All the best!
@@DivKid i didn't want to say that you tells me to buy it ! indeed, i bought it ! 😄 i just wanted to say that your videos are so cool that they always tempt me for a new module ! ahhhhh modular passion ! and hey, keep up your good work ! you are passionated and you transmit passion !
I'm a UK supporter to the bone but even though, if I did like the ENV out to CHAR in, giving it more transient with lower DEPTH values, I will continue my sound design work by using external digital modules (eg: BitWig) in order to raise it's performance to maximum. Note that, it would have been nice to have 2 outputs, as in, one for the transient and one for the tail, since (as per my understanding it's dual core) in order to treat them separately. Example, AM to click and convolver to tail and instead, have to separate them with DAW trickery. But yes, lots of possibilities if you want to spend time mucking around being creative playing trumpet with it YO. I love it for just it's unprecedented tonal footprint just as a base going throug digital effects or naked for my industral techno projects. Thanks for this video.
kcik artlu na era uoy Thanks a lot for your effort and inspiration. As always - i can't imagine how it's can be done better to create such a module review video.
Sounds fantastic, and to me sounds like a DPO / Buchla 259 for alot of the sounds. Im still prefer using other stuff for making bass drums and the like, VCO's, filters and the like. Still nice to have dedicated modules sometimes though. Thanks for the vids/tutorials/ideas Ben, always great!
Hi Daryl, yeah there's some overlap in complex oscillator like tones for sure. I see both sides of it, like you I really enjoying building percussion from separate building blocks but I also appreciated a distilled and refined option in a smaller footprint. The advantage over the latter here is that all (or most) of those building blocks are exposed and it's still very modular, which led to me being able to push it around into more than just kicks.
I love using a combination of modules to create my drums since I end up sampling them to use as one shots anyways. However, seeing one module that effortlessly does what would usually take my entire small system to do half of is kind of mind blowing.
Have come to appreciate your detailed reviews especially considering I am only beginning with modular. I am in the market for a dedicated kick module. I was eyeing at your review on the SSF Ultra Kick and am wondering if you have any inputs on the Malstrom Mandrake? Thank you
This IS the best kick on the planet. And it’s incredible deep and full of interesting oomph and transient. You can use it in n a production and can be seriously taken without any processing. It’s perfect
attack? time to make things fade in? Run the sound into a VCA with a rising envelope would be a solution. Not the same as just having a control to do it though I know.
Start small, figure what you want next playing it. I've got completely different rack after a year, to fit my live performance needs better. Literally, from Erica Techno System clone down to Jomox, IME, Mutables and stereo processing. Out of my old rack only the Bassline remains.
@@Bork_In_Volcanic I have a pretty large collection of synths, Mono’s, Poly’s, Semi Mod, Matrix patched covering about 4 decades heavy on the last 2 years. The Euro Rack is probably next. Knowing me I’ll start with a large cabinet, stuff it full in a year. There’s vids of on my channel, warning it’s a bit out there, no edits or post production.
My favorite kick drum so far in eurorack is the awesome Jomox bass drum. Feed it thru Mutant Hot Glue and crank the distortion and compression so good.
@@tl3ss ahh, I own one. The amount of different kicks you can get is pretty wide. You can get some VERY beefy and heavy “weighty” kicks out of it with plenty of rumble, or not.
Incredible in-depth video, superb, just too much talking over certain parts of the video where you need to let the sounds speak for themselves, especially the part where you demonstrate using it as low end kick over drum breaks. Thank you once again Ben, amazing video as always.
Absolutely, good sounds and good sounds as is good interface design. Excited to see there's a new Entity Ultra Percussion variant coming soon too (SSF teasing on Instagram)
1/4 note clock to trigger the kick, 1/16 note to trigger the random voltages. You need 3 random voltages to the parameters shown and that's it. Patch the kick out to wherever you like.
@@DivKid Ah thanks man! So if I get a kick, clock, s&h modules, and random voltage source like the "Random from Mosaic" I should be able to create some of that burbling bass?!? 🤤 Sorry for my ignorance. I'm still wrapping my head around modular in general.
No worries, we're all ignorant and new to things at some point. If you're knew to it you could try making something similar in VCV Rack for free, get a feel for the patching and signal flow and see what you find. It's not the physical patch experience but lots of great sounds and trying out patches that you can save and come back to. But yeah SSF Kick, a clock with both a 1/4 and a 1/16 output and then you need 3 unique random outputs for the patch I made. So my module with SSF the 'RND STEP' is perfect for that. There's also a Doepfer random module that would be good for it too. You would need 3 of the Mosaic Randoms to get the 3 random voltages.
Hello, would you suggest this, rather a JoMoX Modbase 09 or? I’m searching an Euro module JUST to made some “808s”…I mean the 808style bass drum. I don’t need an exact replica of the sound (or would go to TipTop or other clones) but I need a Module that can offer a vaste range of bass(drums) in the 808s realm.
There's plenty of that 808 boom and lots of options to shape and customise (and modulate) all that with the Ultra Kick. I haven't had the ModBase here to really have much of an opinion or to compare the two. I'd also take a look at the Shakmat Battering Ram, much simpler and smaller but a good sound and capable of those sorts of booms too. I'd say the Ultra Kick is the most flexible with a wider range, but it's good to think about much range or how specific things need to sound.
I like the ‘808’ sound better than the actual 808. Not a huge difference, but you can tell it was a developmental priority. The only reason for sub-audio booms is for testicular stimulation.
I recently covered the IOU by Apollo View Modular (with lots of ideas for utility patches) that adds an offset in some interesting ways ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pLSBj_0w328.html
The Entity Bass Drum is almost a complete synth voice with quite a wide range. It's less focused and there's a learning curve. Once you get it it sounds really good. It has a much more powerful AD envelope with curve settings and cv control over attack and decay.
@@Bananskuden Excellent thanks for your reply, that's very helpful. Sounds like the Ultra Kick doesn't make the Entity Bass Drum obsolete but rather compliments it.
