I don't want to yuck anybody's yum, but I do think it's important to add unbiased experience. We purchased a GFC for our truck 2 years ago. We were initially so excited. We kept it for 1 year before selling it, and we couldn't have been happier to see it go to someone else. Overall, while the frame and bones of it were pretty solid, the tent was absolutely not worth the cost. We had the tent replaced once under warranty because it would let in so much water when it'd rain. I'm talking like... streams of water. So GFC stepped up and replaced it - that was great. The problem was the second tent did the same thing, just in a different way. Instead of one area being sewn poorly like our first tent, the second tent was very porous and would let in small droplets all over. It was maddening. Their fix was to send us a bottle of this very nasty silicone stuff to spread regularly on the tent material - I think they said a few times a year. Uhhh... No thanks. Not for what we paid; no way. There were a lot of other little annoyances too; just the design of the tent area again was poor. The corners where the tent material meets the body of the camper had .5" gaps. They said this was on purpose to allow the tent material to slide around as you're opening and closing, but no other RTT on the market needs these massive holes for water and bugs to get in. They eventually started gusseting over these gaps, so apparently it wasn't actually necessary? There's also no rain fly (as of now) for the tent, so if it rains the night before you pack up camp, you're getting your mattress completely soaked since there will absolutely be water stuck to the outside of the tent. Unless you take the time to towel it off, but the whole point of this is a quick pack out process. This was so disheartening as it happened on the first day of our first trip with it, and we had a few more nights of camping planned but the mattress was completely soaked so we had to bail on the rest of the trip. There's not a lot of creature comfort put into the sleeping area either; no bags or hangers or anything like that from the factory. It's just the bare honeycomb roof. Which, speaking of, because it's white, it 's MEGA BRIGHT in the sun. Sometimes this is nice, but other times, it'll wake you up as soon as daylight hits. A lot of the stuff is minor, and wouldn't really be too bad if it weren't for the fact that the tent material itself, you can tell, is just subpar. I don't know what they're using, but it's NOT good or comparable to regular tents. There's a lot of reports of zippers coming unbonded, seams breaking, etc. Anyway... I have a lot more I could complain about, like the bug nets making zero sense with where they're put, but I hope anyone looking to purchase one will seek one out in person first. We wouldn't have made the purchase if we saw the tent material ahead of time.

The thing is, all you see is a tent. There’s so much more. If you think a motivated Grizzly or black bear can’t get you in a hard sided RV, you are mistaken. It’s much less likely, but I was a Law Enforcement Officer for 30 years in the Rocky Mountains and the foothills country. The Grizzlies prefer the foothills, but there’s always overlap with the species. As long as there’s trees there could be black bears as well. I responded to to so many torn open campers I can’t remember them all. Does torn right off, or they bust the vents open on the roof and tear open the roof for a bear sized hole. If the can’t get back out there they bust open a window and make the exit hole big enough for them. They tear into cars by bending the upper part of the doors to pop the glass then push it down on the side of the door! They crawl through that opening. Thing is, that’s a black bear as most grizzlies don’t fit there. As Black bears go, it’s not a huge one either. I have shot a black bear that was holding the people in the back of their RV (they forgot there was an emergency escape they could have used). The family called 911 and were still on the phone when I arrived. They kept the bear back with a camera tripod and 2 broom handles. The bears face was bloody from the wounds delivered by the tripod, but it was in a predacious way and wasn’t giving up. I shot it broadside with shotgun slugs through a window. The first shot was enough but when I went in, I fired a second round just to be sure. They were in a hard sided 28 foot travel trailer. The bear chased their dog they had tied up outside tithe inside of the trailer. It was a small dog and the family had to witness the bear eating their dog, but it didn’t stop there! The father had some deep scratches to his arm & face, but the 3 kids & mom were unhurt physically. Think about this in you fibreglass or tin can RV when you think you are safe from bears. Camp smart and clean. That will keep the bears away as well, keep your pets close by & if they are barking at something, go find out what it is. The longer they bark, the more worked up the bear gets. Anyway, you can build out the inside of the truck box and be fully self sufficient for a week or longer! Depends on what size truck box you have. You can still do some hardcore off-roading because you aren’t top heavy, nor too heavy. Camp is where you stop for the day/night. It’s handy and offers much more protection than a tent on the ground. Roof top tents are even used in lion country in Africa. Just don’t have any food in them & unlike most, set your cooking area AWAY from the truck, not impressed a slide out from the back of the box. If you don’t have food odours or colognes, perfumes, scented sunscreens, lotions, then you are camping clean and are not attractive bears or other predators. Thing on the greater scale, and not so simply.

GFC is fine in basic format, but lacks the quality and functionality of other USA made campers for about $1,000 more than the price paid for this one. Admittedly this is expensive, but people forget that aluminum/steel canopies alone go for ~$5000-$6000. They can support a *dynamic load* of 150-180kg/330-400lb. This cannot be compared to the cheap fiberglass caps, which are prone to developing hairline cracks over time. That said, the remaining $4000 cost went to the RTT, which I think is a bit overpriced considering you can get the big ass iKampers that can fit like 4 people for the similar price.

Whether it's a dealer add on or not, $10,000 for a camper is way overpriced.
@markclaypole1573

@@user-ch7kb7pe5r This is a designed, engineered and manufactured in the USA product. That comes with a price. Certainly not a price for the casual overlander, but for someone that uses it even 50 nights a year and gets 10 years out of it, that’s about $20 per use. Not arguing there are cheaper RTT options but I bet a lot of them include various levels of imported product and won’t last as long so your cost per use may very well end up being the same or more over the same time frame. I don’t get out near enough to justify something that pricey, but certainly wish I did!!

Would never want a rooftop tent. Too expensive and can be an issue in storms and wind. I would rather get a camper shell and sleep in the back of my truck or get a teardrop trailer.

lol 4K for a roof top tent. Cnc billet everything no wonder. Damn these guys need to do a cost down analysis and maybe look into sheet metal stamping or maybe weldments to lower costs. Just needlessly expensive…. Need to hire some automotive engineers
@Christarpher
@Christarpher Месяц назад
I'd like to give a different perspective of this in the comments section.. This is a seriously impressive piece of engineering, With all of these custom billet parts, it's of course going to be expensive. The upside would be that a lot of the wear you'll need to deal with is just the tent material itself. No worry about plastic hinges breaking or anything like that (which becomes even more important for things that will be outside a lot and see a lot of UV). Of course, the R&D for this is also going to be high, with each custom billet piece needing to be fine tuned. And finally, a company needs to make a profit, you can't just sell this thing for the price of the goods.. A lot of commenters just simply aren't taking into account research, design, machines, shop space, employees, time to build, shipping, profit margin, etc.. Could this be done cheaper? For sure. Could it be done the same for a cheaper price? Doubtful. It really looks like a nice piece of kit.

Making things expensive is much easier than cheaper. It pretty lazy design to make everything cnc billet and just shove that cost onto the consumer. Also remember if you make things cheaper you can ship more volume and make more $$$$$. It’s pretty but any good engineer will see the inefficiencies in this design.

@@GFC One can compare products like yours to bicycles when evaluating what the price could/should be if efficient production techniques were used. When compared to a $5k bicycle, your product has a long way to go before it can be considered efficiently built. -I'm happy you are trying. But keep trying harder if you want to be truly competitive in the long run. The competition is getting better/cheaper. And, as my old Econ 201 professor said. "If you want to support America, buy the best product for you no matter where it comes from. Coddling American industry is not looking out for its best long-term interest."
