I just bought my first swimbait rod too. The St Croix Bass X heavy 7'10". It's for 1-4 oz baits which is all the heavier I'll be going here in PA lol. Can't wait to see how your set up performs!
I'm in the same boat. I've got my okuma guide select 7'11" XH swimbait rod sitting here patiently waiting for my Diawa Lexa 300hd to hurry up and get here. it will be my first dedicated swimbait setup also. your just as excited as I am I can see. lol.
yeah that tatula is a solid reel from everything I've heard. the main reason I went with the Lexa was the 10in baits and I will also be targeting striper in the river so I went with the bigger reel in 6.3:1 ratio. I'm so pumped to throw the big baits all year long next year. I'll be looking forward to your videos with the big baits. I know I'm looking forward to getting some big swimbait fish on video.
I own that same rod and its a beast! It will also throw the A rig a mile and that's another reason I bought it for when temps go into the 40s. Cant beat it for the money.
Alex, That's the same setup that I use, execpt my rod is a heavy and my tatula hd is a 6.3:1 and a lefty lol. Since I've been on a budget in preperation for our out of country move. I contacted Daiwa and purchased a extra spool. I have one spool with flurocarbon and one with copolymer. I doesn't take long to swap out spools and it totally is a money saver. I plan on using this setup for my lighter soft plastic swimbaits. Im going to get a Daiwa lexa 300 for my heavier setups. Other than that I love the setup, its good quality and you can't beat the price.
Just got my Swimbait set up to I went with a Shimano Cardiff 30IA and paired it with a BPS graphite series 7'6 XH rod rated 3-10 oz. I'm as pumped as you dude can't wait for next season!
My setup is the Shimano Poison Adrena 7'4" XH, 14-30 lbs, 1-4 oz swimbait rod paired up with a Tailwalk Elan Wide Power Plus 71L (25 lbs max drag). I rarely find myself throwing anything over 4 oz. Besides, I am not fishing Largemouths anyway, is hard to get a Red Drum to bite on a 10" bait. So, I am good for now.
Personally, I think the tatula hd excels with baits 2-3 oz range. I own one myself however, I have seen others online claim to throw heavier baits on it. I am not comfortable throwing 8 inch hudds with it. i just recently put in a order for the new shimano tranx, expecting it to be a pretty sweet big bait reel
Bobby s almost got the Tranx but went with the the Abu Revo Beast 50HS and love it! It came with multiple power handles to suit your style! It’s a monster reel though
My dedicated swim bait set is a diawa zillion HD and a megabass orochi XX Leviathan love my set up can not wait till winter leaves us here in Michigan lol
I have that reel on my frog rod love it cast a mile, I just ordered the diawa dx heavy 8 ft rod and the diawa millionaire left hand reel just a budget set up but I’ve got a really good feeling about it also ordered some hud’s mattlures and wcz soft plastics check out the citizens by working class zero man n the battle shad looks so sweet
this is the best FOR THE MONEY, not even close to the best. I really like my irods, daiwa zillion swimbait rod and my quantum exo 300 swimbait reels in 5.3 and 7.3 ratios. that tatula 200 is great for the money, if only they offered it in a 5 speed!
I have the same setup but with the MH rod. Love it. The price is insane. Love the 200HD too. I also have the XH but I use a Calcutta on that. My local tackle store (Turner's) had the rods on sale for $93 over the holidays.
Hey Greg I know this is an old comment but I’m curious on the MH version rated for 1-6oz, does it have enough tip to throw treble hook baits and/or enough backbone to drive in single top hooks?
Man I went with Okuma 7’11” SBX Extra Heavy rod and Abu Garcia Revo Beast 50HS! Kinda overkill on the reel but got it a absolutely killer price!! Got lucky on an eBay auction, yes that still happens! Occasionally
i do believe i have a have a new xmas gift to buy myself haha, i bought some nice swimbaits, the gantarel and gantarel jr, a couple s wavers, now time to get a bad ass rod
What size/type line do you plan on using? I have a Tatula HD with 25lb Sunline Flipping, and wish I had bought just Sniper 20lb, 18lb, or even like 50lb braid, the river system I fish isn't really heavy cover, and I use a lot of the similar baits you do.
That rod looks sooooo awesome! I am looking to buy my first setup for swimbaits and I think I am gonna go with this rod! After using the setup for awhile have you come to really like the Tatula reel??
I literally received the xxh the other day man ! I am trying a round reel for the first time though to see how i like them as well. I order some of the swimbaits off tackle warehouse as well, but do you worry about the swimbaits that have treble hooks on the bottom? Worrying about sticking their gills ?
Alright now i want this rod in the med heavy! Which would you prefer to throw A-rigs for smallies and 1.5 to 2.5 oz glide swimbaits? Thanks for any advise Alex!
Isn't a 7 gear ratio too much drag when using big swimbaits? They're like deep divers in terms of resistance or so i've heard. Congrats on the new combo! Hope your rod glove comes soon!
CatinMoon yeah it more has to do with torque on the reel. With the beefed up components of this reel it's designed to take the stress. I like to control my own speed so that's why I got it.
Dominic Bybee truthfully the biggest thing I'm gonna throw is a 10' Mag Draft or Islide 262. I was gonna get a lexa and thought for what I'm gonna do the reel was plenty. The rod is also rated 3-10 oz from what I've read 8 is about the limit on it. Thanks for watching!
it should be fine but I'd get it professionally serviced every season or 2 but I can't wait to see the swimbait videos and the rod is a great rod I got one for my birthday earlier this year I'm in southern Illinois if you ever come up this way let me know we can go stick some pigs
The cork actually came off the rod. I glued it back on but almost threw the entire combo in the water on a cast. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-csaihkhMAwk.html check out this video to see what I’m throwing now.
My set up has changed a bunch since this video. I am now using a Lews Super Duty Wide and a prototype rod from G-Rod. I have tossed up to a Deps 250 on the Super Duty without issue. Thanks for watching!
Hey Alex, getting into swimbait fishing, have my 8'heavy rid rated 2-4oz, works you still recommend this reel? I've had my eyes on a couple super duty but this one was recommended to me as well and then I saw your video on it. Thanks in advance
@@AlexRuddFishing That's why I was asking, given the video is a bit older AND I've been looking at the Lew's Super Duty 300. I have 2 Lew's now and 1 13 fishing Concept. Love both, but leaning towards the Lew's. Got a hell of a deal on my 13 Fishing Muse 8' heavy, they have a 8'6" Extra Heavy I might grab too, only $73. Not sure I need to go that big, but I guess you never know lol. I think it's rated for 4-16oz and WOW, my biggest bait is 4oz at this point lol. Course I literally started fishing this summer, so no idea where I'll end up. Not sure Iowa has 15lb-ers lol.
how do you like your diawa reels? always been a Lew's guy. but like the looks and ratios of the zillions. I went with the 7'10 heavy St. croix bass x for my swimbait rod. 1-4oz
I hated my Zillion at the start. Felt huge in my hand, sounded loud, didn't cast as far as I expected and the T-wing system doesn't work if you jig fish with your index finger lifting up on the line. That being said, I love it now. Not sure what happened, maybe it needed breaking in, but it's my go to froggin reel and jig reel. 9.1:1
WindyCityBassin sold all my zillion reels. total butt for the money unless you can find the 9.1 for $130 or so. I really like the tatula ct for around 79 bucks. I ordered 6 of them
LuisT LTZ I'm loving it! I went when the higher gear ratio because I like to control my own speed. Plus when I'm throwing glides in the wind I want to be able to catch up with my line.
Alex Rudd Fishing I hear so many people say a fast reel will ruin the action of a swimbait. I don't even own anything lower then a 7 speed. Plus a buddy of mine is selling exact reel in this vid for $100 new in box.
I've fished with 5:1 all the way to 7:1 for big swimbaits. I'll say this unless your like creeping huds as slow as you can for winter fish. I really think a 6:3 to 7:1 is just a good reel over for swimbaits. I mean I work most of my glides with my reel and if I'm on a super long cast in the the wind there's no way I can catch up with my line using a 5:1 to even work the bait properly. That's just what I found for me. It could be totally different for someone else. I just think of you've been using high gear ratio for a long time a super slow like a 5:1 will drive you nuts because you don't feel like you have control
Alex Rudd Fishing My thoughts exactly bro, i couldn't stand a 5:1. Plus at the price i can get this reel for I'll find a use for it if it doesn't work out for swimbaits. Most of my swimbaits are treble hook anyway no hudds here in S FL. Been fishing over 20 yrs but I'm just getting into this big bait thing. I'm hooked though! I appreciate all your insight bro, tight lines!
Alex Rudd Fishing I've got that exact swimbait rod combo...was in VA throwing big rats...landed a couple 5 lb'er no problem but had a big had to be 8 spit a treble hook. I'm not sure if it was just I couldn't keep him pinned cause there wasn't enough action on the rod or what. Then another RU-vid guy was talking about just burying his rod and that serious action keeps his larger bass pinned. Have you heard of that? Said it increased his hook set ratio to like 90%....besides I love the combo...one of the eye guides did crack and I'm contacting Tackle Direct for a swap...thoughts?
I've not had any issue keep bigger fished pined. I'm not sure why some seem to have issues. The rod is a broom stick though no parabolics. I always just grind em in.
just dont order from Tackle Direct, ordered the 13fishing Muse black swimbait rod and they charged extra for shipping tube but it came in a crushed box in pieces. Of course they wont exchange it till ups delivers back so the few singles in stock wont be available then.
Alex Rudd Fishing gotcha, thanks for the reply, heading to either cherokee or douglas tomorrow (still can't decide) for a little 3 on 3 tourney. good luck tomorrow.
@@AlexRuddFishing No problem. I will just take it back because I never took it out of the box and get the daiwa tatula 200 instead. Thanks for your help! Tight lines.
If that was my wife, she would have turned the vacuum back on and left the door open just to spite me. haha. Anyway, do you think this rod and reel would also hold up to some musky fishing?
I would love to see a video in the Tennessee river just to see how they react to big baits. Also tried getting my license but I can't get it until I live here 90 days witch sucks because I'm going into my 3rd month so have to wait a bit longer.
@@geraldsaved www.tacklewarehouse.com/Lews_Super_Duty_Speed_Casting_Rods/descpage-LSDMSC.html?from=ARF I’m using the 7’11 XH for my big baits. Deps 250 and 10” Mag Draft (4+ oz baits) Then for sub 4 oz baits I’m using this in a 7’11 H rod www.tacklewarehouse.com/Lews_Super_Duty_Custom_Plus_Speed_Stick_HM60_Cast_Rods/descpage-SD.html?from=ARF
Alex Rudd Fishing I just ordered this rod man. Handle looks monstrous but i got it for $89 shipped! Can't decide between the Tatula HD, Lews wide spool or 13 Fishing a3....
