One thing we left out of the video is the cable system on the bottom. The connection is located under the timer and the cable is fed through a small canal designed for it. This prevents accidental removal and makes the connection more secure.

For me, I prefer the look of the G4, however, if the WCA says it's the new official timer/sanctioned by the WCA, then I'll get it.

Older stackmat timers are still allowed by WCA.

They will probably eventually switch because I am assuming that speed stacks will stop making G4, and the tech will break

I like the features, but I definitely would pick the g4 timer because it looks better in my opinion and it has the "save times" feature. I know most people don't use that, but I use it to save my pbs.

I saw the g5 timer reveal about a month ago and everyone was complaining about it lol. I personally think it doesn't look very good, but the fact that you need to hold the reset and power button for a bit longer than normal to reduce accidental presses is a big upgrade. (referring to lazermonkey's video about timer resets at worlds 2017) We should probably use this in the WCA, but hopefully in 2pad mode not 4pad

main people who don't like the new timer are speedstackers. From what I've heard it is good for cubers, and bad for stackers especially with the ranking/record reset they have to go through.

@@CewbPianist the WSSA/Speedstacks could just use the same timer rules as the WCA (fingertips on the timer only). that would make things infinitely easier

Speedcubing mode is 2-pad so most likely it will be used in WCA. I don’t blame the cubing community if they end up accepting it since Cubers have much different needs for a timer than us Sport Stackers

Speed stacks should make another timer specifically for cubers with a design similar to the g4. The g5 looks ugly and has very little benefit to cubers (or to stackers for that matter).

speedstacks needs these: G4/G5 compatibility extensions (for old mats, not meant for competitions) (less wasteful and a better profit method) Adjustability (hand sizes, hand sizes) these 2 will make the timer much better.

I can see some problems with the slight delay in resetting the timer. Many judges will hit the button, thinking they reset when really they didn't, leading to a lot of E1s. I wouldn't mind the four pad function because I have seen a lot of questionable start/stops. People close to karate chopping or people starting with their fingers way extended out (their palms are on the pads but not any part of their fingers). I think it's inevitable that the WCA will use this since (I assume) the 4th generation times will stop being made, meaning new cubers or comp organizers would find the 4th generation timers harder to find.

I prefer the g5 Worst thing about it though is that its basically impossible to find a cable to link it to a computer that fits it lol. Because the plug is in a recessed area in the middle of it, its hard to find a cable with a slim enough sleeving around it to fit :S

It would also receive equal hate from cubers if WCA Records get reset if it will be the exclusively official timer (thumbpads required).

No it wouldn't be near as bad for cubers. WCA already has rules in place that require you to start/stop the timer with your palms/fingers and not your wrists. If 4-pad mode would be required by the WCA, (which I am almost certain it won't for a few reasons) the times people get would probably be only ~0.1-0.2 sec difference, maybe less after getting used to it.

@@octogintillion The problem with the thumb pads is that they’re also painfully small, and you’d have to aim them exactly right on the thumb pad. Sometimes cubers I see like to hit the timer hard when they finish a solve, and it’s tough to aim like that, unlike in stacking where you work in your aim into your down stack motion…

I actually kinda dobut that this will become comp legal due to the four pad setting. Anyone could turn it on without the solvers knowledge causing them to start solving without the timer starting or take too much inspection time having to turn it off if they only notice the four pad setting is on during inspection.

imo WCA should legalize timers like YJ or QiYi. These are nearly unbreakable and look much better. Speedstacks gen4 is so defective and expensive. Gen5 probably will be as defective as gen4.
