➤ Dive into the fierce history of The Battle of Blar na Léine, also known as The Battle of the Shirts, fought on July 15, 1544. This was one of Scotland's bloodiest clan battles, where Clan MacDonald of Clanranald and Clan Cameron clashed against Clan Fraser, Clan Grant, and the Mackintoshes.
The battle stemmed from a dispute over the chieftainship of Clanranald between John of Moidart and his cousin, Ranald Gallda, backed by the Frasers of Lovat. On a scorching day by Loch Lochy, warriors fought in their shirts alone, lending the battle its name. This battle is remembered for its sheer brutality and its significant impact on Scottish clan warfare.

Perhaps the most surprising part of the video is that we got nearly twenty minutes without rain in the Scottish highlands. Scottish history is phenomenal and we should recognise the important part it plays in modern society. Scott in his novel Rob Roy tells of the execution by McGreggor’s wife of a British soldier by tying a rock to his neck and throwing him from a cliff into the loch. As Scott was an historian I think there’s probably quite a bit of truth in this fiction. If the clans weren’t hacking each other to death they were in Europe getting paid (probably brandy and oats) to hack someone else to death.

I'm a Grant through my grandmother but no idea when our people came to America. I know we've been in Missouri for around 200 years and came from Virginia but no more. The family story is that our folks came after Culloden but not sure.

You might want to know that many people emigrated after Colloden because the Highland way of life came to an end. Traditionally clan chiefs cared for their Tennant farmers, but it changed because they found it more profitable to put sheep on the land, and remove the farmers. Clan Grant fought on the side of the government forces which were victorious. The defeat of the Jacobite forces accelerated the demise of the highland clan system.

@@gerardgosling6715 That is the story I have heard but with no certain paperwork from Virginia to trace back to Scotland I don't imagine we'll ever know. So many of the records were burned either accidentally or on purpose during the Civil War.

I'm also a Grant. Clan Grant was one of the few clans not to suffer greatly from the Highland Clearances. Good Sir James Grant of Freuchie was one of the "progressive landlords" and built Grant-town-on-Spey to provide homes and employment for his clansfolk so that they wouldn't be forced to emigrate. Also, not all Grants fought for the government army. The Grants of Glenmoriston faced harsh reprisals in the aftermath of Culloden due to their support for the Jacobites. Famously, the Seven Men of Glenmoriston helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape capture. However, the chief of the Glenmoriston Grants received a pardon because his kinsman, Ludovic Grant of Grant (the main chief of Clan Grant) put in a good word with a Whig politician.

Behind the hills, between Helensburgh and Faslane submarine base. Their is a monument. 1603 - clan Gregor v Clan Colquhoun. Sounded as vicious as the battle of the White shirts. Probably worse. Let me know if you find it matie - it's on the right as you come up and drop down into the the Glen from Faslane naval base. It was a right bugger to run up to.

This is very interesting, and I love it. I am Austrian, but since I was in Scotland with my then 17 year old son about 13 years ago, I am very much interested in Scotland and also its most interesting history. I am still racking my brain, why exactly it felt so much like coming home from the moment when we were on the bus from the airport to the hotel in Edinborough, just driving through the streets. We had not met anybody or seen anything at that time. I tend to say "it´s the people", but we had not met any at that time :D . Funny coincidence is , that for non - gaelic speakers our own (german) dialect really sounds very much like gaelic :D:D:D . I love your videos, they are like a holiday for me. Thank you! :)

It's interesting you mention that! My next video will explore why the term "Clan System" is actually a modern / Victorian invention. Historically, clans were quite diverse, and there wasn't a single, uniform system they all followed. Oh, dear - some advice on Gaelic pronunciation would be good. The actual field of battle, according to the local views of the late nineteenth century, was submerged under Loch Lochy when the canal was built and the local level raised in the early 1800's.

@@kirstymacfarlane2117 I’m not Gaelic speaking so I will unintentionally mis pronounce some Gaelic words (less so in the future), I’m always open to being corrected with misspelt / mispronounced gaelic words, in a kind manner…… With regards to the EXACT battle site location, that is technically unknown, if you look at the Historic Environment Scotland Battle report and other notable reports / mini excavations of the area, the exact battle location is unknown, apart from being somewhere at the northern end of loch lochy. Like you say it could have been submerged during the construction of the canal, although other locations pin point the battle to the field I speak about in the video. Always nice to hear contrasting views 👍🙂 Thanks for commenting 👍

Family lore stated only that there was a feud. I was astounded at the absolute savagery perpetrated by the gentle Johnstons. Including burning down churches filled with enemy lords and clansmen.

The battle of Dryfe Sands was the biggest clan battle in Scotland and the warring clans were the Johnstons and the Maxwells .If you investigate it ,you will find how smart the leader of the Johnston’s was and the use of the “Lockerbie lick”

It involved around 2,400 men, while The Battle of Harlaw in 1411 (Red Harlaw) is considered the largest clan battle with about 12,000 men involved. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to visiting the Dryfe Sands battlefield in November and researching the battle! 👍

It means the field of battle as in Lá Léana . Gaelic poets used variations of the word a lot . No doubt the MacDonald bards would have composed some duan (song) to regale their Chief about it . Probably now lost ( the duan ).

Yes, this is the northern end of Loch Lochy 👍The canal you see is the Caledonian Canal, built in the early 1800s. In 1544, it would have been just an open, swampy field.

Thank you for your content. Allow me to share this point of "Observation" The Clan system had high standards of "Accountability" for all members. Especially leadership. In modern times there is no accountability., which sets our "Mindset". The Clan system is a "Family" of values and beliefs packaged together to be the "Housing" for it's members to survive (even prosper). So when someone works against those values and accepted beliefs. That is perceived as a direct threat to the Clans/individual survival. If we "Unpack' The statement "Chickens will do" and look at this "Ethos" through the eyes of people in that time, in the Clan system. That is a good place for us to explore. Most Historians , like most people will pursue the easier path of numbers and Dates. But the "living history" of the times and the people is in opinion the real "Treasure". Could you imagine if we in modern times had even a small amount of the "Accountability" that once existed in the Clan system. We would not now be living is these Dark Days of approaching Marxist Slavery. Decide for for your self...Just food for thought.

Fraser’s of Lovat - may have ended up being pioneers of SF forces- Lovat Scouts. Incidentally related to the Stirlings- likewise! The family also put up money for sporting grounds in England which became famous. I think Stamford Bridge May be one of them.

The Frasers of Lovat contributed numerous regiments and men to the British army from the late 18th century onward, including the Lovat Scouts in WWII. Their history is incredibly fascinating. I plan to create a longer video on the full history of Clan Fraser of Lovat next year. Also, the information about Stamford Bridge is interesting-I didn't know that! 😅 Cheers for sharing! 😃

I was looking into some of the Sporting grounds in England used for Shinty and other sports - my friends played cricket at the old family house of Arthur Kinnaird - doyen of the FA and probably first football star. Many of the Scots gentry born in London Turns out there is Notts Forest, Old Trafford etc. Look forward to more. Love the Beauly/Strathglass ( small world- rules of shinty drawn up and first club - but they recently demolished the house and hotel where this was done.)
