I know I have the physical ability but not sure the mental strength. Full of admiration here on what you’re doing. You know in an effort to make engines with environmentally friendly emissions they’re actually causing more damage ‘to the planet’ through unnecessary & wasteful scrappage. Regards to you both!!

When I used to do these at the land rover dealership, I always took the transmission out first, it makes life so much easier. The wiring harness and crossover pipe stays on the engine and comes out with it. This way also makes refitting the engine a doddle as you don't need to locate the engine onto the gearbox, you just drop it onto the mounts, then put the gearbox back in before you put the front on. With the front off and the engine mount off, you can easily access the torque convertor bolts. Great video by the way!

Next time we try to take the trans out as well. Can´t be much worse. I wanted to avoid taking the DS off and the transfer case... I also cannot lift anything out of my pit once the car is over it. Most impressive part is that Christian ISN'T just a "Land Rover expert" and is, instead, applying a fundamental knowledge of engineering to ensure things get done right. I get the feeling that he'd be just as comfortable working on a steam-engine or a spaceship as he is at working on Land Rovers. You're absolutely right about rebuilding the engine. The only alternative might be to throw a used engine in it and then sell it and buy another D3 afterwards. Even so, you still have the same dilemma - that an apparently "good" vehicle might have things waiting to go wrong. If you want to run an older, complicated, vehicle, you just have to hope that the vehicle you buy has a lot of good components and then, as things wear out, you have to be prepared to replace and rebuild things.

Actually, Fabians also had been standing for a long time, and I have read that about others too. Brilliant video as usual! The problem you have highlighted with the dealership is all too common here in the UK and elsewhere too maybe. Cars and engines are so complex now the dealerships are not run by enthusiasts but they are created by accountants, run by accountants and staffed by sales staff. Profit over service is all too common and customer satisfaction is ignored. When you look at the complexity of the engine you have just removed, it it hard to recommend a modern combustion engine over an electric engine, or an old fashioned Petrol V8. How about a Tesla engine swap?
@Vera_and_Christian

Oh wow the challenges are getting more and more serious! Interesting statement from Christian about the main seals. It's been said that 80% of the wear and tear of an engine results from cranking. Typically this is not a big issue on a normal engine with quick starting cycles, good battery, etc. What adds to the frustration here are slipping main seals. That leads to a catastrophic engine failure in minutes. What usually is a normal wear and tear and an issue which can be caught easily turns catastrophic in an instant. I don't see that this Peugeot engine is a good fit for a Land Rover. Thank you Christian, your videos are enlightening!

Magic video, the one I have been waiting for, thank you so much. It reinforces my thoughts around lack of hydrodynamic lubrication on start up, the route of the oil from sump to oil filter, oil cooler to oil galleries to crank is far to long, long cranking, short journeys it's a time bomb but I still love them. It's literally seconds before hydrodynamic lubrication hits the white metal bearings. I run 10w 40 semi synthetic oil on my Disco now (225KMs 140k miles) as 5W 30 is like water! Thanks again for sharing this feel sorry for Fabien 🙄 Can't wait for the line boring and re-assembly...You Guys do great videos...enjoy them so much👍

There are anti drain back valves in the system so it is not on every start the oil needs to find its way from the sump all the way up to and through the system.
@caryknapton7233
@caryknapton7233 2 года назад
@@Muppet_Interfector Yes you are correct but only I believe within reason, it's only in the oil filter housing from my understanding. The oil will still drain out the galleries through the bearings and gravity will drop it back out the oil pump this is why I now run 10W 40. No expert on these engines so stand to be corrected. I rebuild classic 6 cylinder Japanese motorcycle engines for a living so just going on what I see on the design of the TDV6 as I see it.

@Muppet_Interfector
@Muppet_Interfector 2 года назад
@@caryknapton7233 sounds like you have a good experience base. I thought that an electric oil pump to prime the system before spinning the engine would be a good way to get around the possibility of a start without lubricant in critical areas. Obviously no one in the auto industry thinks it is necessary. In the majority of cases I guess they are justified by the longevity of their engines. It is a pity when an otherwise good engine spins a bearing. I think that there is more than just lubrication going in in the case of these engines. I suspect that making the engine so compact has resulted in a crankshaft that is a little flimsy and perhaps insufficient bearing surface. All just speculation on my behalf as I have no information other than what appears to be numerous failures to rely on.
@caryknapton7233
@caryknapton7233 2 года назад
@@Muppet_Interfector The Lion engine is no different than any other engine, lack of lubrication results in spun bearings and I have dealt with many of theses but never on the TDV6. As Christian highlighted once the shell bearings twist by a few degrees it cuts off the oil supply and the engine is doomed to catastrophic failure as unfortunately Fabien discovered. Hydrodynamic lubrication acts as a high pressure pump on the bearing itself but requires oil to be on constant supply especially on start up, the white metal alloy is designed to deal with this but only to a certain limit. Short journeys, delayed oil pressure results in accelerated wear, the 5W-30 oil cannot be sustained within the bearing after many cold starts, so wear is further accelerated that's why I have moved to 10W 40 as a precaution. I know of a Disco 3 that has done over 1 million miles (1.6 million KMs) in the UK it was used for vehicle deliveries so was towing a trailer with a vehicle in tow😱. I think the first engine expired around 500kkms.

Fantastic job and a big hello from Australia. The Aussie built Ford Territory Diesel uses this same engine but we had upgraded main bearings. We also require to service these engines every 15K km. I do mine every 7500Km. A russian RU-vid channel also found that these engines are running on too thin oil (5w30), and they recommend 5w40 in warmer climates like Africa and Australia. In term of reliability and easy maintenance, nothing beats an Aussie built 4L Inline Six "Barra" engine. Most taxis did close to a million KM with simple maintenance.

Again, totally brilliant. Sold my D3 a couple of years ago at 110K miles. I did all the fixing myself, but never had an engine issue (Oh my God, thank you God). Most everything else went wrong, but I was able to fix. I don't have a garage so most of this was on the drive (rain or shine). We (wife especially) really miss that car, and I'm seriously looking for a D4, but those broken cranks give me the willies. I would really love an imported V8 instead, but they have their own engine issues (at least fixable on the driveway I think). Great engine research by Christian and equally great patience by Vera who listens and videos everything! My wife would've left the garage in the first 5 minutes (1 minute, if I started talking about drill holes).

This was a really good video and your explanation of reasons why the bearings spin and lead to crankshaft failure was really clear. I’m about to pick up my 2015 D4 (new to me) from the main dealer tomorrow and videos like these make me worry I’m making a huge mistake. At least it will be under JLR’s warranty for a year and I’ll prob extend it after that.

Don't be stressed and enjoy your car. Just make sure you are doing your part in keeping it running for the long run and be sensitve to anything not normal. Getting a OBDii tool is also really helpful in keeping you sane while driving a Discovery. 😃👍🙋‍♀️ Vera

Just make sure that you spoil it with oil changes, I’ve done mine every 5k from new, now at 200k, oil pump and belt upgrade fitted at 100k about to repeat the same exercise again, look after it and it will look after you. Worst and least reliable cars Ive ever owned, a Toyota followed by a BMW !

Fantastic technical video Christian, your friend Fabian should thank his lucky stars to have friends like yourself, and also Vera who is so patient to share her husband and garage space with that D3. For an electrician you sure are also a brilliant mechanic...

Of course I am not going to "consider" in subscribe, I am going to subscribe right now!! Christian has explained so well his thoughts about the LR TDV6 engine failures, and I have learned so much in just 30/40 minutes, that I feel really grateful for your efforts and time uploading these videos. And one thing to say it is I don't even have any of these Land Rover models... Mine are from year 1992 to 1998, and I own 5 Landies (Defender 200 & 300, Discovery 200 & 300 and a Range Rover Classic 300)... and a VW T3 Syncro Westfalia... Thanks for sharing your knowledge again! Warm regards from the Kanarische Inseln...! ;-)

You have totally surpassed yourself Christian with the quality and level of details you provided with this video (which is so well put together Vera!), so interesting to watch and please pass on my condolences to Fabian for his engine to fail, could happen potentially to any of us D3/D4 owners I think. Really look forward to watching the next and tell Fabian if he needs a bit of crowd funding for all the parts I would happily chip in as the value you guys provide for putting these videos together is immense. Best of luck (when does luck ever really help?) with the engine rebuild
