It’s crazy how I’ve been on the wait list for a Submariner for over 4 years and can’t get my hands on it. I refuse to buy it from the flippers no matter what. I won’t pay a penny over retail. So good move from Rolex.

Wont change anything, AD s will still favour repeat customers over new ones, i am sure they will find a work around. Besides ADs don’t want to actually work to get new customers and I doubt will ever go back to the days of offering 10% discounts to get your business. I don’t think Rolex actually cares as long their product moves. If they really cared then they should remove ADs and sell online direct with a legit customer database and real lead times not the fake waiting lists….and then watch the grey market prices tank. Somehow I don’t think Rolex want that either.

Plus, flipping 3 watches a year at just a $3k-6k price point is still and extra $9k-18k a year for the flippers. That's being conservative and it's still a decent chunk of change. That's if they're selling all 3 of course.

@turbyoulance

Rolex AD's make approx 36% selling a watch .Example say a $20,000 watch sold is purchased by an AD from ROLEX for $12,800. So that's a reason why there are rarely any rolex's in the shop. They are PRIG's to start with .The low level one's like the Air King and milglaus are what is pushed onto anyone to try and clear the inventory , even if you said you wanted a Daytona. The brand is not selling in China atm and is on the noise everywhere. Flipper's and Chron 24 and other sites are making much much more $$$ flipping these on the Gray market than the actual AD's are selling them .People are leaving ROLEX in groves for better luxury watches that they can buy at retail without the bullshit in this brave New World. 19/20 ROLEXes are not even attractive for a start,ROLEX are headcases.

Flippers are making the most on the old and rare watches. It’s also a gamble on their end that watches they buy will increase in value. They don’t predict the price but the demands. If Rolex wants to fix it they need to expand and pump out more watches, but if they do that then they’ll just shoot themselves in the foot because now everyone got one and it’s not as valuable or rare as it was. Hmm, I do not understand the mystique with buying a Rolex watch. There are many other reputable watch makers out there that has a rich heritage. Rolex does not have the sole rights to it. But, they are quite lucky and deservedly so to command such a high premium on their watches. I am just saying take a look at other watch brands and you might find yourself amazed at the quality and price of some time pieces. Just my two cents. 😀

this is just a marketing trick to jack up the price, the only way is to make it hard to buy but there are alot of super rich people willing to pay more, so average Joe will price out from the market. This is phenomena already happened with other branded luxury goods as well.

Come on guys, imo there’s no way they can stop the flippers. The AD will still contact their favorite or VIP buyer whom have spend a lot of money in their shop purchasing either Rolex or other watch brand and advise them to use their friends or relatives name to register the watch. So there’s no way Rolex can detect. To completely tune this problem, I know it’s crazy but which might help is that all the e-forms that we submitted in the waiting list is a google doc that will be control by Rolex and select the interested party through balloting in sections of 100 every month. Then I’ll consider that as really solving the problem.

Just get a different watch, you can get better watches for less money from Omega, GS, JLC, GO etc. If there were no idiots willing to pay highly inflated and frankly laughable grey market prices it would not even be a thing.

If we all decide not to buy pre-owned watches at prices that exceed authorized sellers' new prices, prices will naturally go lower than the MSRP, which should have been the case in the first place. It's time to clean up the overinflated, overpriced gray market and good riddance to all those sellers who have overinflated prices among themselves. Now, having to pay more for a vintage watch makes sense, but honestly, for a new or recent used watch, it's infuriating.
@ChrisJohnson-yw2ky

Yes I agree, have to starve them out. A little bit of patience is always a good thing with something like this. Just have to wait a little bit longer for your favorite piece but it's a small price to pay in the long run. Also, let's say 20% of the Rolex purchases are flippers. If they stop making that premium, they'll stop buying which adds another 20% to the available supply.

Rolex was a watch for boomers. We were wired to admire the watch because of that generation. Building your own legacy within another brand is probably the better experience. And you can choose what that is. Rolex doesn’t define your legacy or represent the heirloom that you pass on.

If Rolex was serious they would control the wait-list. They would sell online like Omega and other watch companies do. Flippers can easily get other people to buy on their behalf. So limiting 3 watches per person won't work .

This won't work, flipper has the relationship with AD, all he/she got to do is send in his or her friend in to purchase a new Rolex. Only solution is sell direct like Tesla, only had centers for delivery and service. For example I order a Rolex on 8/9 online with Rolex, get it on 8/12 at my local "Rolex Center" former AD site...that's it. If the watch sells itself why do you even need AD, keep the profit to yourself Rolex.

Rolex(AP and PP do the same) AD in China just dump all of their watches to flippers(99.9% situation), the only way to purchase a rolex either you're a high rank CCP members(or their close relatives), or buy it from flippers. In my eyes, the flippers are the actual AD in China.
