Salvador Sanchez was the smartest counter puncher in the history of Mexican boxing. Just as he sat on the cusp of greatness his life was tragically snuffed out in a car accident. Let’s look back at the fights of the lost genius of Mexico.

The man was simply amazing. I remember I was at night class up at Jersey City State College in 1982, when it came over the speaker in the Student Union Building. I was just walking into the building when the news stated that featherweight champion Salvador Sanchez was killed today in Mexico in a car accident. I was shocked, I stood there like someone had just snatched my lunch and the cops saw it and laughed it off. I was devastated. I watched both fights of Sanchez and Lopez. Little Red Lopez was one of my favorite fighters. Lopez could take a beating and bounce back like Holyfield. No one withstood Lopez when he started his march, no one but Sanchez. Sanchez dismantled Lopez and you knew by the 5th round that you were going to be saying goodbye to an old friend and hello to the new kid in the neighborhood. I watched the second fight between the two and it was like watching a surgeon rid someone of a huge tumor whose time had come. I watched him destroy Gomez, something I didn't think was possible and I saw him methodically take apart a young and brave Azumah Nelson. My God, he was good! And he never looked tired, even after a good exchange he walked back to his corner and sat down, not a heavy breath seen! Folks he had the goods! Dead at 23! God bless you Salvador Sánchez Narváez, God bless you, and thank you!

@@elel2608 Exactly! I believe that Sanchez eventually could have become an all-time great in the sport. Most of the names on your list Sanchez could have beaten. In my opinion. But he didn't. That being said , there were just too many great fighters in the sport to award the all-time great moniker to a single weight division boss with so few contests. But for me, Sanchez will always be my top fighter coming out of Mexico. And when it comes to that nation that produced so many great champions and some of the toughest warriors to ever put on a pair of gloves- that is saying a lot.

@@MrWARHAMMER68 "Better" is a funny word Black Eagle. First of all, one cant compare a fighter who died at 23 who had less than 50 fights w/ a man who has fought over a 100 times...I mean we CAN, but just what is the criteria?!....# of world champions faced and defeated?!...# of title fights, losses , wins...see what I mean., I have no issue w/anyone who feels Sanchez is the greatest Mexican fighter, or Olivares, Zarate, or Marquez for that matter..just sayin I saw all those guys live, did you?!.....It "does " make a difference.... I love Sanchez, and Mexican fighters in general, but I guarantee you if Sanchez hung around long enough he would eventually have had his ass handed to him, because thats LIFE and thats" TIME" But thats not how we see him, is it?!.... Salvador Sanchez is frozen in time, just 23 years old when he passed..Wilfredo Gomez, who was schedlued for a rematch was at the funeral.... Anyway, thats HOW we remember him, crystallized bbrilliance, cloaked in Mythos much like Jimi Hendrix, or Charlie Christian.. I saw Sanchez take the title from Danny Little Red Lopez...Those fights were FREE back then...Yeah man, we dont see Sanchez old and tarnished, on his back, bruised and bloody......we see him wrapped in a mystical aura, and for good reason However on the other hand, lets be fair, and accurate.....Julio was WELL past it when he fought those fights w/Oscar, who, lets face it was much bigger to begin with and after rehydrating noticably so, and alfready had physical advantages in reach and height as well as youth,...Heck, Julio was already past his best yrs and his prime weight vs Sweet Pea, taking nuthin from Whitaker, who I met more than once at the clubs I played at w/ my band. as for the Randle fights , everyone has their nemesis my man... Ali had Norton, Escalera had Arguello, DeJesus had Duran, Shane Mosely had Vernon Forest etc etc.etc. "What a joke"..?!?!....Cmon, Lighten up Black Eagle. This doesnt have to be contentious and why should it be?!.."Boxing fans...same team".......Ive been watching the fights since Ali defeated Sonny Liston !....Im 66 yrs old wore a uniform before you were probably born, survived two cancers, played music w/ legends folks read about in Books.....Ive earned my place in the lineup More and more I make my living as a writer these days, thanks to Covid closing down our music venues....have a monthly column at chess.com.....Ive met and interviewed people like Tom Loeffler, Abel Sanchez and GGG when I wrote for a boxing E zine....I know Duran, who BTW is a pretty good percussionist believe it or not.... As a youth I boxed in DC and Maryland, esp Hillcrest Heights when SRL was a 14 year old featherweight, so I know what I am talking about and I just dont have time for anything that isnt positive ...spirited debates are one thing Black Eagle, there is no substitute for passion, but insults quite another. Ive literally forgotten more about boxing than most that comment here, its a fact. Look man, These cats I originally mentioned above were great fighters, and certainly that includes Chavez who won his first 89 fights, and Im talkin against guys like "Juan LaPorte, Rocky Lockridge, Terrence Ali, Bazooka Limon, Roger Mayweather, Ruben Castillo, Mario Martinez, Meldrick Taylor, and his fight w/ the great Puerto Rican fighter " El Chapo" Edwin Rosario was a clinic, AND a classic as was the war vs Jose Luis Ramirez, who imho was one of the greatest and most under rated fighters EVER, and still ANOTHER GREAT Mexican warrior//{ ck out his fights w/ Edwin Rosario if you havent already, they are both incredible} Many of these names are only known to real boxing fans, especially people who were around at that time, and ALL the guys I mentioned above were gamers who fought many times for the title. Anyway, Im out of coffee......lol Have a good weekend Peace

Best forearm guard defense I've ever seen. And he didn't merely use high hands defense, which limits a fighter's counterpunching. He actively used the forearms to parry while setting up for counters. Brilliant tactician. The best contemporary boxer in the Salvador Sanchez style is Bud Crawford.

Very well done Rhythm Boxing. I agree by far the greatest Mexico has ever produced. I remember watching the Gomez fight at my uncles house in Mexico on a small TV in the street with all the neighbors surrounding the TV. I was 11 years old and that fight made me a life long boxing fanatic. When I got back to Texas at the end of that summer I picked up the sports illustrated issue with the article about the fight titled "knocked over by a ferocious feather". That two page spread still hangs laminated in my office in a frame and is one of my most prize possessions.

Danny lopez and Salvatore had two of the better fights. Danny retired basically after the second bout. His thought was if I can’t be champion why am I here. He was the most devestating puncher at feather weight perhaps in history. Got to give lil red his due half of his career losses were to sanchez and he was the long time feather weight champ himself prior to sanchez lifting the title. Sal had it all his best punch was a sneaky left hook you never see coming the way he bounces and avoiding punches it had so much power behind it was so impactful. Was so slippery to fight. Such a great technician in ring.
