When Russell Westbrook was moved to the Clippers we saw a shift in his role, taking on new duties… or should I say old habits?

I think he has potential for a comeback season, but i also agree that he needs to work a little bit to clean his decision making and shot selection. If he can shore up those two issues even by a little bit, i think it adds a lot more value to that Clippers team. They have a serious chance to make the WCF with him either way though

Your favorite is someone who has freakish athleticism with poor shooting and decision making? Who hasn't worked on it his entire career? But plays really hard so makes up for it in other ways mainly by hustling really hard. You're entitled to like whoever but I've always said, if you had nba potential, or even play pick up with your friends, who would you want to emulate? Some guy who has freakish athleticism that you can't emulate, or someone who is less athletic but has honed their skills to the best of their potential? Or if you had a son, who isnt the most athletic guy, who do you want him to idolize after? I go for the dude who worked on his skills and have a thirst to always get better, or a dude who just relies on his athleticism? This is my beef with westbrook. Why congratulate and pat the guy on the back who sure hustles really hard, but isn't actually as good as the others?

A Westbrook devoting his full energy on defense is a scary thought. I love that he's willing to change. Agreeing to come of the bench for the Lakers really redeemed his career.
@mattmannlvca
@mattmannlvca 7 месяцев назад
Coming off the bench did nothing the change happened because he realized the Clippers didn't need his inefficient scoring. His playmaking and remembering how he got to the dance is how he carved a spot on the team. Had he been 6thman Russ, or Mr triple double he'd be out of the league.
@melomanace3415
@melomanace3415 7 месяцев назад
Russ devoting full energy defensively would be a double edged sword bc he breaks integrity and freelances way too much. Hes incapable of staying solid bc he gambles so much and pretty much does whatever he wants to do. That, along with lack of focus and poor IQ is why hes always been a bad defender despite his physical tools.

Maybe good for him bc he can rack up stocks, but not good for his team. Thybulle is solid AND he recovers. Russ does not stay solid at all and gambles way too much. Just watch a full game of russ on defense and see how much he gets caught just staring at the ball and losing his man or taking ridiculous gambles and relying on teammates covering for his mistakes.

Appreciate the take on Russ' defense. He does like to bait and chase players relying on his (still) elite athletic explosiveness. Haters will isolate a play where overplaying backfires, but the value of the bait and chase is so much higher than an isolated mishap here and there. You could see in the Suns series last year how in the heads of KD, Booker, and CP3 he was with he. They were looking over their shoulders frequently, whether Russ was coming or not. We were excited to see Russ as the primary initiator in a high screen and roll offense, but then the Harden trade happened. It's a shame Russ hasn't had an opportunity to play out his career in a starting role as a primary initiator.
@BigAnt2324
@BigAnt2324 7 месяцев назад
I feel like if he slows his jumper down and take his time he might start making more than usual cause he has a very fast release. His athleticism has dropped a little and when that usually happens to athletic players they switch to shooting roles more and develop a shot he had a decent mid range to get the job done but now it’s inconsistent but I’m hoping this season we can get a glimpse of how he was with shooting from his mvp year

Russ is still russ even in his time during with the lakers. Its just that he dont fit alongside with bron (another playmaker). They both need the ball to be effective. I know that clippers would be the better fit for him even before he starts playing for them

8:15 Russ with the clippers shot over 36% from 3. Russ has always been a decent catch and shoot player. With the clippers he can definitely lean into this more.

Cool to see a focus on Russ - his 'agelessness' and durability is remarkable. The flip-side of this is his maturity is also stunted. Its do or die this yr in Clipperland ! p.s. This mic sounds harsh af - you should use a de-esser until you can get a smoother mic.

Tbh for him to be able to make a team a championship team he’s gonna have to expand his game. He can drive and has a pull-up but he needs a step back or a post game. If he could play the post and add in some post fakes and up and unders / jump hooks he’d be able to prolong his career and make himself more effective when he’s not shooting jump shots. If you can play the post teams really can’t keep you from scoring inside because you can score over the wall. Or at least score when you don’t beat your defender off the dribble

I got a question, why is Russ the only player the media talks about can't shoot threes and make a big deal about it. Yet literally over 80% of players can't shoot 3's either. It really begs the question if they only highlighted it because anything negative about Russ gets views and clicks.
@HoopVenue
@HoopVenue 7 месяцев назад
I would say it’s 1 of 2 things, the main one is that because he was a former MVP/superstar, he’ll just always be under more of a microscope. Secondly, it’s because he insists on shooting so many jumpers despite not converting much, Giannis gets a lot of criticism for the same reason.

They changed a rule for free throws “the NBA banned players from walking beyond the three-point line between free throws in 2017. “ year 2017-2018 season. But Westbrook has long been a creature of habit and has walked back towards half court between shots since he was eight-years-old. Ever since the rule change, his free throw shooting has plummeted.

your take on him not shooting the 3 is a horrible take. Always shoot the 3 regardless of the outcome, the second u put the ball down now your entire team has to reset and the lane is cluttered + now they know u won’t shoot + now YOU know you won’t shoot. Always shoot the ball because even if you make 1/3 (0.99 points per attempt) the LEAGUE average is 1.14 points per possession, slightly above westbrooks 3. So even if he misses he can always get it back on D
@HoopVenue
@HoopVenue 7 месяцев назад
The difference between 1.14 and 0.99 is not slight, it's gargantuan. In a 100 possession game, that's the difference between scoring 114 points and 99, 15 points worse than the AVERAGE offense.
@adzappin_2567
@adzappin_2567 7 месяцев назад
@@HoopVenue but you aren’t going to score .99 or 1.14 every play, it’s an average. The only way to get better at shooting is to what? shoot !! the more shots he take the more he’ll start to make , the more that .99 will go up. Doesn’t matter how bad he is at shooting
@HoopVenue
@HoopVenue 7 месяцев назад
If that were true, 3P% would rise on a linear scale. Russ shot 35.1% on wide open 3s from 2015-17, 34.3% from 2018-20, and 33% from 2021-23, he clearly is not improving so why waste possessions? It's okay to shoot some, but playing into the hands of the defense is not going to lead to good offense in the playoffs, have to counter.
@adzappin_2567
@adzappin_2567 7 месяцев назад
@@HoopVenue i get where you’re coming from but for all those years, he’s shooting 3-5 3PA per game. and if you look at 2017 he shot 7 per game, resulting in the highest 3P% of his career of 34% (which isn’t stellar but the effects of shooting more per game have their positive effects after some time) Passing up the shot and trying to make due with the horrible spacing you’re going to have after that IS playing into the hands of the defense, considerably more than actually shooting the shot. All you need to do is make 1 and the defense is gonna start inching more and more towards u, allowing westbrook to be able to blow past them and drive
