Is this the only tool watch you ever need? | Hands on with the Casio G-Shock GW-M5610-1BER

So, like a lot of you watching this, the idea of a tool watch is something that really appeals to me. I'm talking about a watch that can go wherever you do, that you're not afraid to bash about or submerge in water because you know that the end of the day it'll still be telling the correct time.
It's one of the reasons I like both my black Bay 58 and my Seiko SPB143. But the other day I came to a realisation that, if I want a good tool watch, I've kind of just wasted my money with those.
And the reason for that is simple: The Casio G-Shock exists.
Because despite all the marketing hype and what we tell ourselves about our favourite tool watches, be it a Seiko, a Tudor, or something else, at the end of the day the G-Shock does everything I could really need from one of those watches but it only costs me £135 quid.
So today I thought it would be a good idea to talk about why if you want a proper tool watch you really should just buy the Casio!

I’ve been treating my Omega Sea Master Planet Ocean like a tool watch since I purchased it 15 years ago. The only time I would take it off was to workout, golf or shower. It is currently in the Omega Service Department for the second time (2018 was the first time). My timepiece collection includes several very old automatics and a couple of quartz watches that need batteries. Unfortunately they are all dress watches and I have not worn any of them since I purchased my Planet Ocean. As I wait for my Omega to return, I’ve decided to purchase a watch winder and a new tool watch to wear on the days my Omega stays in the watch winder. After reading several reviews and watching countless RU-vid videos, I’ve decided on the Casio G-Shock GW-M5610U for all the reasons you mentioned but was struggling to choose between the black or grey backgrounds. Your excellent video was exactly what I was looking for to help me decide. Thanks.

I think the reviewer has missed the point of the G-Shock when he mentions that its an "ugly duckling", and that he will reach for his Black Bay 9 times out of 10. You see, the G-Shock is THE tool watch, by design and function. It's never been intended to compete with a gold dress watch, or a fancy mechanical watch you buy because you want a status symbol. The G-Shock doesn't care about your aesthetic sensibilities, it simply offers you a functional tool to use in situations up to, and including, those where your life could be at risk. If you are worrying about the looks of the G-Shock, or you'd rather wear that fragile mechanical piece.....well, it's simple.....you simply don't have a lifestyle that needs a tool watch.

I just received mine in the mail a day ago and wore it to work. I will admit, adjusting the watch was a bit different compare to my other G-Shock’s but definitely worth it. Solar powered, night mode, world time, stopwatch, timer and the auto-light setting when you put your wrist up in the dark… and last but not least, the lightest G-Shock I’ve worn so far. Yes, definitely worth it. 10/10

After buying numerous watches from Seiko, Grand Seiko, Omega and Rolex, I've settled on the GWB5600 (resin bluetooth square) for an everyday and work watch, and a GMWB5000 (full metal square) for dressier occasions. I just feel much more secure in their hardiness, and their utility outdoes anything mechanical. The backlight makes them readable in any circumstance, and I have zero fears about damaging them, or attracting the wrong kind of attention. I recently worked at an event surrounded by people in Datejusts and loud designer wear, and I slipped on by with my black square, rather than hiding my Sub Date under a sleeve. I still love my other watches, but these are what I wear now.

Great video. I've had the positive display version of this watch for about 6 years. Its my beater watch and gets more wrist time by far than any other watch. I've gone through 2 resin bands which eventually start to crack. I recently put a combi bracelet on it which is a plastic bracelet and is very lightweight and comfortable. In fact, its the most comfortable watch I own. So here's the interesting thing. I didn't buy it for the looks, but the durability and function, specifically the solar power and atomic features. However, the more this watch has gotten banged around and has never failed me, the more I appreciate the way it looks. Its become quite the iconic timepiece for me.

To me the emotional connection comes from that retro, tooltastic design. It comes from the fact that I can rely on it, even where I couldn't rely on any other watch. Sure, it's not beautiful, but it's tough, charming and full of character.

I've worn the older 5 multiband GW-M5600BC almost daily for 13 years now and I still look at it with admiration (yeah, I know I'm sad). It's still on its original solar battery, the resin case doesn't scuff and the crystal is unscratched. The paint on the combi bracelet clasp and a couple of the links may be looking a bit faded but that only adds to its history of use in work and play. It rarely fails to sync and even then only when I'm traveling and camping in my van. As to the negative display.. I have less than 20/20 vision and If it was difficult to read I wouldn't persist. I can see it clearly in artificial and day light and at night I have the tilt backlight, so no problems. I hope I'll still be wearing it in another 13 years.

Good video and nice mechanical watches. Design, materials, functions. Everybody's needs and wants vary and they may even change at different times. The thing with G-shocks is that there are so many models you, most likely, will be able to find one that meets most of your requirements. And, because they're affordable, probably, you'll end up with more than one. Which will enable you to choose the best watch for each situation. From fishing in northern Canada to getting food from a drive-through (and be able to time it, at night)

Nice vid, you say it calls out for no emotions, thats a good thing. I think everyone needs one. A theyre good timepieces and B they are made to get your hands dirty, you will do things with them on your wrist that you wouldnt do wearing your tudor, if you bang a tudor around you will feel each bang. Gshocks can also be a different road for collecting, colors, limited editions, specific models in series, etc

I own this G too and it’s my favourite G-Shock. Love the looks of it, don’t have issues with the legibility of the display, and the features are fantastic. I also own the same one with the positive display too, but I wear it way less. I have 5 more G-Shocks but they have less wrist time. That being said, I also love mechanical watches, with the full stainless steel package. They’re for different situations, different moods. If I go out and about or have to do some handy work, then G all the way. For casual activities, then one of my automatic watches will do. I’m a believer that every watch collector should have at least one G in their collection.

Wear my G-Shock only if I am using power tools, working out at the gym or playing basketball but do not wear G Shock while I play. These claims about the impossibility of an “emotional connection” whatever it is, are just words people use to cover up the fact that simply mechanical watches are more expensive and usually carry a brand name that inflates the price. Of course you’ll feel much more emotional if you damage a watch which you know is expensive. If the same mechanical watch had no indication of its brand to prove to people who may notice it that it is actually a brand name mechanical watch, the there would be none of this bs emotional connection. Just compare cheap Chinese mechanical watches and much more expansive brand name watches. You already know inside that you will have less or no emotional connection

Wouldn't compare this to a mechanical sports dress watch. I only wear g shocks for rugged activities in sports/gym/house work or even with tactical gear if you are a gun person. I only wear mechanical sports dress watches for casual light activities 20% of the time. 80% of the time I wear g shocks since I'm always in the gym or working on my car in my garage.

In my mind the tech exists now to make ultra readable, damn near indestructible watches with highly accurate quartz movements for 100$ or less. So why would I wear a 1000$+ gorgeous automatic diver/field watch for hard use activities? I'd rather keep my really expensive pieces looking and working nice and let something like this gshock take the abuse.

Short answer... Yes! I prefer the 5610BA, but few things beat any G-Shock when it comes to a tool watch.

Like the BA as well, but prefer the SD, MW or a GW-M5600-3.

Im the same as your summary. I have 2 g shocks which are great but I am still an automatic officiando. But the g shock is the go to for when I just wanna have a watch on my wrist and not have to think about it. Even automatic tool watches aren't ever going to be tool watches for me like a g shock

I didn't wear a watch for 25+ years until recently when I decided to stop using my phone for the time. I bought a g shock square because I owned the original way back when, when I got it home I accidently dropped it straight out of the packing putting it on my wrist, it landed face first and bounced, I picked it up and tried again. That's why I bought a g shock too clumsy for anything else.

I’ve always been a mechanical watch guy…. But I just pulled the trigger on this one on a 40% sale on Amazon… I’ll use it as my “beater” as well

I collect and appreciate and repair watches. No watch exists that is a better value than a G-Shock. No excuses. No apologies. My G-Shocks are my favorite watches. I honestly don't need anything else. Great vid.

Got a 5610 as my first G-Shock, however with the "normal", positive display. All the watch you would ever need really, however hard to dress up ;)

Well said. The new MIP display models are probably better still. The GBD-100 for instance. I have two GD-350's, a great watch.

After having two automatics and two Swiss quartz fail me, I think I might just go for a G-Shock and "be done with it". I was looking for that "one watch" that was just perfect, ticked all the boxes, and it would be one of the items that I could have more "long term" than any other. However, that's no good if said watch(es) can't keep up with my use and just "give out" every other year. If I get my grail watch, I want it be a "do-it-all" piece. That's kinda the point. But, to me, I've realised there's actually something to be said of watches that are in reality heavy, unaccurate, and delicate. They're jewelry, and I get the watch hobby/enthusiasm and collection bit. I've been there. Done that. I enjoyed it quite a bit, and I understand that others will continue to do so too. But on the other hand, I think my friends blacked out G-Shock, that he's owned for about 10 years since he bought it at the end of highschool right before going into the army, is a much cooler one-watch collection than my collection (with about a dozen pieces fleeting in and out of it over the years) has ever been! So Idk. I might step away trying to find that "one watch" (like a Pelagos, or Grand Seiko SBGP013), and rather just use my old humble Seiko SNXS79 as a dress watch, and wearing a G-Shock for everything else. It's a cheap two-watch collection, but a damn good one.

I wear my GW5000-1JF when I need to be active and outdoor. I wear my GMW B5000 black metal for dinners and going out meeting people. My Tag Monaco has not been worn for years and I will tell you why. There was a layer of what looks like grease on the inner face wall of the watch from day 1. My friends Breitling, one of the numbers fell off when his kid nephew drop the watch on the ground. Is a $8000 investment that's what I used to tell myself. I don't even look at it any more.

I wear my G-Shock (GW-M5610) practically every day. It’s my casual go to watch. I own a few mechanical watches ( an Omega). Watches are a comfort thing.
