Which LCD is best? Negative or Standard?

Its about priorities, to look cool or to read the time without squinting.

Negative looks way better. Positive is better at everything else.

I have one of both. The positive display is so much easier to read from any angle compared to the negative display. Negative display just looks so badass though.

I got the negative display recently, idk about everyone else but I tend to look at my watch straight on if I’m checking the time and I’ve had no problems reading it. Great watch and I prefer the look.

I love the look of the negatives but practicality wise the positive just has to take the biscuit. Fantastic video and ingenious yet simple method of testing. Great work...

Casio should allow positive/negative display via a menu option

I had both and I also had the steelseries (STN display) You can see the negative display just fine (in daily use) BUT you have to look 0,5sec longer.. I think that when you only wear the negative display (STN or no STN) then you will get used to it. But if you are switching everyday, then the negative seems to be more unreadable. But still.. negative is still easy to read, if you look a 0,5seconds longer. The brain has the get used to it.. Sorry for my bad explanation and grammar, but English is not my language.

I used to love my negative display Casio but as I have got older and my eyes have got less sharp coupled with switching to varifocal glasses the Negative display has become a no-go for me. I miss the coolness of the negative display but the normal display is a heck of a lot less hassle.

Standard is easy to read ... but Negative is cool !

The tilt viewing angle is the most important but they always show just a left right pan in the adverts online. Ive been disappointed several times by watches that need a precise wrist rotation to view the time, usually due to the display but sometimes also due to a very recessed face with a protective ridge around it. Always preferred positive and now I have the science to back it up. Great video.

There's is something very strange on RU-vid videos... I think there is an I.A. putting some dislikes on videos like this... The tittle is very clear. The explanation is very clear. Why would someone put a dislike??

I am now glad I have the GW-B5600-2ER arriving in 2 days. A friend had an older negative display G-Shock that was horrible. The technology has come a long way since then. Mostly, I am looking forward to the new module. Thank you for a thorough comparison.👍

I have several G-shocks with as well positive and negative display. There are moments when I want an easy readable time and then positive display is the choice(except from GBD H-1000 Squad). But the negative displays are so cool!

I only have one negative display watch, and it's a customization I did myself in about 15 minutes or so. It's on a base model G-Square, the DW5600. While the bezel was off, I decided to also remove its white print and I swapped out the chrome buckle and tongue with a black set. Personally, I love how it turned out, and it had exactly zero learning curve. While I was lining up my polarizing film, I found the point where it was in negative and had the brightest segments, then I backed it off a few degrees to darken the segments a little. If I thought for one second that I could do it successfully, I would replace the chrome pushers with black ones, but I already know that I don't have the manual dexterity or the patience for that level of detail. I'm pretty sure I could remove the E-clips and replace the pushers, but there's no way I'd be able to reseat the clips. I decided to leave the lettering under the crystal alone. After I had everything reassembled, I installed a black JaysAndKays BullBar. Again, I love how it turned out, and it gets more wrist time than all of my other watches combined.

I have both the the GW-B 5600, but I have the GW-N5600U with the upgraded module and screw back cover. Love them both, plus I have the GW-9400 Rangeman.

I have the exact negative display model. It has never been a problem to look the time.

I have both of these watches. I actually have over 125 Casio watches and G-Shock watches. I prefer the look of the negative display , especially when the display is in various colors.

This test is awesome! I massively respect people like you who put the time and energy in make a vid like this. You hit the nail on the head at the end of this video by the way: you kind of choose between form/looks and practically. I'm torn between 5500bb and 5610 (positive display). I prefer the look of the 5500bb but 5610 beats it from the functional point of view. Anyway thank you for this video I found it really helpful.

I've got the standard LCD Casio DW5600 which is my swim watch. I was thinking of getting the negative display, but I was curious about being able to read the negative display while underwater or while turning between laps. Although your review didn't directly address my question, it did answer it. The standard display would be better. THANKS FOR THE REVIEW!!!

When I was a kid the one of coolest thing was to reverse polarizer on digital watches :). Now I see it is biznis plan :)

Always felt that negative displays were for aesthetics not really for practicality. Thank you for quantifying it in this video.

I remember inverting the didplay of my calculator in (I think it was) 7th grade. I don't remember exactly, I believe we flipped the polarizing filter upside down. For other displays, I guess it might be possible, if you are able to taka apart the layers of the display. Everyone had different colors on their calculators, and I think it started when someone wanted to try to swap the keys between two, to get a different color scheme.

I finally ended up buying the negative version of the 5610 with the combi bracelet. It's not a problem after all if you like the look. I was expecting it to be worse.

Damn I've always seen people say the standard lcd is better but this is the first time I've seen someone attempt to actually measure the difference.

Nice presentation! Although for me the main pain point of the negative displays is the amount of light needed for it to be legible. Perhaps an experiment #2? 😊

Legibility between the positive and negative display is slight, but from the tactical point of view, the negative display is preferred as it does not give away your presence when someone is looking in your direction.

Great testing method. I prefer the positive display, for legibility and authenticity to the original DW-5000C.

Thanks for the test. as someone who is visually impaired, I was concerned about the offerings of some of the Casio watches being only Negative display as I never owned such a watch before. I'd rather have whatever I'll be able to see best. So it seems like traditional positive display wins out. The negative display looks cooler but does seem to sacrifice clarity.

I live in the desert which is very sunny the negative is way more visible in the brightness of the sunny Sunday

Bought a negative just for a change. Took it back after a week as it was more difficult to read.

Great info . That is exactly what i was looking for . Unfortunately , the model that i liked did not have a positive display , so had to settle with the negative display one .

It is actually a 'hiding time from nearby person" feature.

Depending on the type of use of the watch determines what I would prefer. I have both. I have some watches were I bought the same model with one using a negative screen and the other being a normal screen. Then I can choose what I want... It is obvious the regular screen is a lot easier to see and use than the black screen. We can say the negative screen is more of a private type of watch.

The most scientific tests on watches viewing angles I've seen on RU-vid. Oh, Bothly got me there 😄

Small point still: The neg display Bluetooth watch can be configured for a 4 sec backlight. WIth the tested pos display watch, the backlight time is only 1.5 sec. I find it difficult to read with 1.5 sec backlight. Just my 2 cents.

I have positive and negative display g shocks and I nearly always wear the positive display ones. In most normal indoor situations the negative displays are just not very legible. They are great outdoors in direct sunlight but in any sort of lower light situations I find myself tilting the watch towards a light source to read the time. Positive display all day for me.

I bought a Timex Ironman that was negative. After driving away on the highway, I realized I couldn't read it with my arm on the steering wheel. I immediately returned it and never went back

I agree with most here. Negative has the cooler look, but the poorer visability. Also, what about the battery on negative? Always felt it was using more artifacts of the display than the standard does?

Great review! I would love to have a positive 3459 module in my GW-M5610 as I prefer positive displays. Until Casio offers this option, I put the bracelet from the GW-B5600BC onto my 5610 and have been happy ever since.

I liked that someone quantified this. I have both and rationalize the negative display as a stealth thing for when you are feeling stealthy. You don’t need to make the knowledge of time available to a bystander hoping to catch the time off your wrist.

Nov. 30. Just picked up a Neg veiw screen G-Shock like the one you have in the video Been using the standard one for 20 years.

I also liked the negative display combined with the black body, but until then, until I saw a positive one with backlight! GWX-5600WA-7JF. The result is a light body and a bright display! Super! Excellent Work!

I chose the negative display not because of the display itself per se, but because the positive display model has no bluetooth. If the normal display model had had bluetooth, I would in fact have bought that one instead.

For me, a negative display should always come with tough solar. Most of the times you need that illumination to see the time and illumination drains battery. Looks cool, but as an adventurer I will always use a positive display on my watches.

I like the date on the "negative" display watch shows it in the traditional "English" format (day/month) rather than the "American" (month/day) format. Its the one feature on all the G-shocks I've owned I wish I could have changed.

Your graph colors should be reversed as the "negative" display is darker and vice versa. But great review and technique. With the auto backlight, I think the difficulty in viewing the negative display are mostly irrelevant. For the stealth look, I think it's worth the minor inconvenience in the situations where the light might not help.

Positive for me always.

Personally i prefer positive as I believe negative displays are much harder to read. But after purchasing the Gwb5600 AR im actually impressed by how clear the time is. I dont kniw if its just me but some negative displays to be precise the gwb5600 series have a 'BETTER' negative display as compared to other 5600 series by casio.

I have a negative casio and under most lighting conditions the screen is very readable. In dimly lit rooms I either look a bit harder or activate the light on the watch. This trivial level of inconvenience is more than worth paying for the added coolness of the negative display.

Negative is best overall for looks and makes it stand out less, in a good way. I have zero visual problems.

The AWGM100B is blacked out and has a negative screen. I can't see shit at night. The only complaint I have of that watch

I got one of these negative displays, and can't see the watch most of the time. Most reviews show you the best images of the negative displays and not the reality.

As of this date, 58 people don't know how to tell time...Great video by the way. I prefer negative but depending where I'm working and the time of the day, the standard will suffice.

... it would cost Casio absolutely nothing to include a choice in settings to either have the the positive or negative view showing. I have the original Suunto Ambit which has the choice... negative looks cool but positive is def better

Just my opinion of course, but I think the negative display is marketed toward "tacticool" civilians, whereas the positive display is much more practical for actual use, civilian or military.

I've got a GXW56 coming, and I was looking at inverting the negative to positive, but you made me feel a bit better about the negative display. Maybe it'll be okay. Negative displays are nice for dual analogue/digital watches, but pure digital just looks wrong, in my opinion. I've got a dual display Seiko Sportura SNJ005, and that would look awful with a positive display.

If I want that 1980s look - the positive. For that slightly shady, a bit calmer, modern look - the negative. Fuckit, I always thought the negative ones looked like the LCD broke and liquid spilled inside. I'll take the 80's.

Oil fill the negative, otherwise they're just too difficult, need to hit them with either kinda twilight or the sun over your shoulder. But when you submerge them with oil it shows up the same from every angle, and then negative LCD works well enough (ps this also works with regular LCD watches, improves them although not necessary it does look nice)

Negative is pure style. Love it more. Love using my back light

I've had both a Fenix 1 and a Fenix 2 and the positive LCD (and white backlight) are the only thing I missed from the Fenix 1, I had to tweak contrast a lot in order to read the display at night while running, never had to do it with the Fenix 1
