Hey homie fries, of course the list could go in any order, so if you'd like to rank them you can leave a comment : ) I'm gonna try to redesign the 5 lowest from my list in tomorrow's video, hope you have an awesome possum day!
Hey hey, i totally agree with you, this 2024 logo is the worst of all time. But just to make a precision, this woman represents Marianne, which is the symbol of the french republic. Anyway, not smart at all...
I'm brazilian and I remember when I first saw the Rio logo I was certain that it was inspired by the amazing french artist Henri Matisse's painting "The dance", which is pretty awesome
FUN FACT: The Rio Olympics logo represents the union between the nations shaping the "Pão de Açúcar" (Sugarloaf mountain), and the colors of the Brazilian flag as well.
Great analysis on the logo design. Beijing 2008 logo is actually the shape of ancient Chinese seal or a printing stamp, which is similar to a signature in Ancient China. The human figure is derived from the Chinese character ”京”, (pronounce jing) abbrev. for Beijing. The stamp logo is like a commitment by China to the whole world. Also it symbolizes the posture of athlete runner finished racing line. It tells you significance of the culture.
Eli M. I think the one you are talking about never was official, I rly love it tho. It seems it’s against the rules to manipulate or alter the olympic rings so that one could never been used
No, it wasn't used because the original logo you're talking about was for promotions and to get Paris to be the hosts, and you can't use the same logo twice
The logo is also great. It's round like a medal, it's gold, it has kissing lips because city of love, it is very clean. I have no understanding at all for the hate. And lilke you pointed out the typo is amazing. If you want to see ugly logos look at Los angeles and atlanta again.
I never realized it until this video but of you look at the RIO logo, the characters form the letters "R-I-O" with the dot for the "i" being the head of the center figure.
Another great aspect about Rio's logo, is that it is 3D. There were sculptures of it around the city at the time. The Idea was to create a symbol you could touch/feel
Feel like the comments are under-appreciating the Beijing logo. The little dancing pictogram in the center is an calligraphic rendition of 京, the Chinese character for Beijing. It also uses a traditional stamping texture and plays with negative space.
I think they under appreciate a lot of these logos, they all have different perceptive, I don’t understand why people comment like they designed it , like have they ever thought about these combine with its own culture and history, I’m so sad like so many people are just joking about how it bad not focus on the concept.
I think the Paris Olympics logo is smart. It is supposed to be the Olympic Torch, and at the same time represent the Paris 1900 Summer Olympics being the first to allow women to participate. Color choice could've been different, and I also think the lips could be minimal
I actually really like this logo. It looks like a flame to me. The only thing i would change is the mouth. Edit: Also the typography is the THING in this logo and makes a great job.
I think it's a gorgeous logo, it depicts the Marianne and a flame at the same time which is just awesome designing. (The Marianne is a symbol of the republic, like the bald eagle in the US, for those who are wondering)
Rio is my favourite.I quite like France though as it incorporates art and fashion whilst the negative space on the face becomes the flames of the olympic torch.
I'm french and I don't like the Paris 2024 logo...I just look at a an "hair salon logo" and the Marianne look & feel is completely missing. I understand the idea of doing a negative space trend logo, but it doesn't work for sport competition! 😪
the one in Rio 2016 is the most beautiful, it is 3D, in addition to showing a very famous tourist spot around the world, the "sugar loaf" still shows the colors of the Brazilian flag
I'm from Rio and I must say, looking at all of them now, Rio is definitely the best one. Although when it got out, it was accused for plagiary. Don't remember from where exactly. But you can look it up and you will find it.
I think the Tokyo design was meant to look like a winner's wreath with a cutout of a Sakura flower in the middle. Like most Japanese design, it's really quite subtle. My faves are Beijing and Athens! Very iconic.
Tokyo logo has nothing to do with Sakura. It represents different view points and people (the shapes). And the subtle part comes into place when you look at the paralympic logo. The shape is different but was made out of the same amount of small parts. Meaning we all have all kinds of different shapes but deep down we are the same.
@@MacCc91 ah my bad. I wrote this comment before looking at the Tokyo 2020 website. You've got the gist of what the emblem meant. There's more though, apparently the navy chequered pattern is a traditional Edo design. The sakura cutout must have been a happy accident! 😄
I liked the Sakura themed one (the one that was used in the bid). The JOC should have maintained it imo. Also, the torch’s were shaped in the form of a Sakura flower.
I mostly agree with your judgement but if I were to choose, let's say, an adidas track suit with one of these logos, it would be, hands down, Atlanta 1996.
The London 2012 logo is meant to not only say “2012” in a weird graphic way, but be a weird geographical representation of the British Isles! Still weird but there’s slightly more meaning.
It’s supposed to be inspired by the 80s pop culture, the same goes for the colour combination and the spirit of the games are similar: energetic, bright and youthful.
@@frederiklist4265 It is the jing character. Here's an excerpt from wiki: "The seal is inscribed with a stylised calligraphic rendition of the Chinese character 京 (jīng, meaning 'capital', from the name of the host city) in the form of a dancing figure."
I'm not a brazilian, but RIO is one of the most iconic, dynamic and timeless logos. yes the worst is Paris 2024, this is so fucking simple but not very creative, Isn't Paris one of the art centers of the world? Why is the logo so artless
I love the new Tokyo logo! The blue and white checkered pattern was popular during the Edo era, with the empty space in the ring revealing a cherry blossom design. I think it’s so simple and clever, and very emblematic of Japanese culture, at least for those familiar with it.
That's incorrect. The logo was crafted to represent the Olympic rings, the letter M, a running track and a podium. I believe its actually brilliant and probably one of the best Olympic logos.
The Sydney logo overall represents the flame while the top alone also depicts the opera house, the middle and bottom is showing a human figure in running motion, the middle on its own is also presenting the sun and two boomerangs forming the hand, and the bottom which is the leg or torch holder also paying homage to the boomerang and the wave similar to the top in the boomerang indicating the sea... just realizing this now when watching this video. very smart indeed and so so cool
In art deco era graphics lips were often drawn in the style that Paris 2024 logo has. Also in 1920's, it was popular in (glamour style) women's make up fashion to apply lipstick in a way that cupid's bow made a sharp angle in the middle.
Actually, if you look just right, the Rio logo simultaneously represents the shape of Pão-de-Açúcar, a famous and touristic spot in the city (two mountains side to side, one taller and thiner than the other), and it also spells the word RIO
I like the Rio ones when it’s 3D animated but i will give my Twixbar to the Beijing one , more impactful. Btw the character is also the calligraphy for Beijing if i remember it good
For me the London olympics were the best and the logo represents it well. It was the only olympics to truly have a great legacy and it was an electric games as the logo represents. The games went for an actual brand and it truly was outstanding. Even the mascots put sports first and truly excited the younger generation.
100% agree. Plus the only not egoistic logo. It’s not about Tower Bridge, not about Big Ben, not about the Queen, not about London. The logo is about 2012 - the year of the 30th modern Olympic Games when the athletes of the world came together. The emphasis is on togetherness in a certain time, not about one city, one tiny part of the world.
Beijing looks the best it’s clean and very modern but also timeless, it works well in any decade. I don’t get Paris 2024 the logo just has nothing to do with olympics accept for the flame symbol.
Rio's logo not only represents the shape of the famous turistic attraction "Sugar Loaf Mountain", but it's also the first and unique 3D printable logo, like a sculpture, so you can really touch e feel it. During the games, they put giant sculptures of Rio logo everywhere around the city and olympic buildings. Everybody wanted to take a pic with it. It was a great sucess!!! Indeed one of the most creative and iconic logo of olympic history.
I feel like the London one was always gonna be difficult to pull off because all the others have an obvious logo and the location and rings underneath whereas London tried to go different
The Barcelona logo was changiong the rules from his predecessors, freehand draw style, also it was used to depict every sport using the same style. Why the grey? well, that the design at the beginning of 90s, it's some of the Barcelona design style from that era. I like the grey shadow btw :)
I think the Sydney 2000 logo is the best. It is very 'Australian' in the sense that anywhere you look at it has a symbol and meaning. The uppermost is the silhouette of Sydney Opera House which can also depict a smoke trail from an Olympic torch. You can also see boomerangs which we all know that Australia is known for. Props to the designer! Kudos!
omg i was so nervous for the Athens one cause it's my fave i didn't want it to be in the empty fridge 😪the watercolour, the texture, the doodliness, the white and blue! it all just captures Athen's design language perfectly
Beijing is the best one! Beijing is also one of the most famous olympics to me. The logo to me combines caligraphy and also this sort of ink stamp which really brings out lots of history of China since they invented printing! Overall the red also can be seen from their flag which is sweet.
Tokyo’s shows all people of different shapes and sizes coming together to make one. So I mean.. it clearly has personality, just need to see the meaning behind it which can be difficult for some unable people.
@@bonehand87 ye all logos obviously have some kind of meaning but if it's not directly obvious to someone that just has a glance at it... it means it lacks personality...
My favourite logo are athens and tokyo olympic. The worst of course london 2012 😂. But if we talked about the opening ceremony, london 2012 was just the most unforgettable one 🔥🔥🔥
hi, Zimri. As a Chinese, I can explain a little about the Beijing Olympic logo, the shape is a traditional seal,(ancient Chinese used),and inside the seal is a movement of an athlete, also the "Lishu' character of 京(jing), respect for Beijing(北京),and Chinese culture. AND last ,thanks thanks for your video.as a young designer I learn a loTlololot.
The Rio Logo is the best because it captures the Olympic spirit. The London one I personally like because they went with a unique approach and it reminds me of a graffiti style. I think the 20 in (2012) also represents the Lo letters for London.
Considering that in Ancient Greece the Olympic Games winners were only awarded with a “crown” made of an olive tree branch I believe the Athens 2004 is the one that captures the essence of the Olympics. It may not be my favorite execution but it’s on point with the Olympic Games!
I just want to say, as a Chinese, I'm so proud of the Beijing logo as it ties together traditional cultural elements, movement and modern design style so well! Red, seal carving, calligraphy, character "文" and a person with organic movement... God I love it!
It really is. The Shanghai World Expo logo was fantastic too. But the 2022 Olympics logo was really mediocre, I think China should stop making logos based on characters, it's too much.
Paris 2024 is one of the best olympic logo ever made. It combine the gold medal shape with the olympic flame and Marianne because for the fist time there will be as much women than man. But I guess it's a bit too much complicated to understand for an american. I understand now why LA 2028 will suck.
It’s a crime you skipped the Tokyo 1964 and Mexico 1968 logos which are almost universally considered two of the absolute best logos ever. The Mexico one especially was so iconic that it was repackaged and remixed for the Mexico 1970 & 1986 World Cups.
Rio is 100% the best. for sure. i liked the direction paris was going, the typography is excellent, but i just don’t think it was executed well. looks like a rough draft
I do not agree with your ranking of Paris 2024 logo. I see you do not know what represents. It is showing an olympic flame in a color of a chamagne, which is very important for France and the last thing are not the mustache but the woman smile from a symbol of french revolution - lady liberty. I would like to ask you that you repeat the whole ranking and think trough. Thanks
Favourites: Beijing 2008, Rio 2016, Atlanta 1996 (as a concept, colour choices ruined the concept) and Paris 2024 (completely disagree with you on this one, sorry). Worst has to be the 2012 logo, not good at all!
Please don't believe this horrible logo is the best we can do in France. Before that sh** there was another logo for Paris 2024 wich is WAY better ! This logo was a Tour Eiffel drawn with a 2 wich can also be seen as a 4 please see it on Google images ^^
The Montreal '76 logo is in the shape of a red maple leaf, the national symbol of Canada. Google "Seven Sisters of Moscow" and you'll understand the meaning of the Moscow 1980 Olympics logo. No mention of the boomerang in the Sydney logo? The boomerang is a traditional tool of the Indigenous peoples in Australia. The symbol of the Athens logo is a laurel, which is a wreath worn on the head as a symbol of victory. It's what Greek athletes would have been crowned with upon winning their competitions in the original Olympic games. The Beijing logo is the Chinese character "jing" stylized to look like a running person. The Tokyo logo is based on ichimatsu moyo, a pattern of design from the Edo period of Japan.
The London 2012 Olympics happened when I was 7, I swear it took me years to realise that the logo spelled 2012 and wasn't just completely random shapes, lmao. I like it though, it's different.
