abchasi27 He uses his toys and his voice (which is also a toy to him) like this all the time - and it's really funny when he shares the toy with us, and he observes US making noises into it. He just loves sound of all kind, especially if he can control and change it.

Dragon Kick I know - the human really is, isn't she? She makes me laugh all day long... (OK, she doesn't MAKE me; I choose what I mimic, thank you very much.)

Dorothea Derickson Some birds have learned from watching/listening to Disco's videos - some of them even end up calling themselves Disco, which may or may not be a good thing! - but many budgies (or other species of birds known to mimic) simply never learn. It certainly isn't due to lack of brain power - it may have more to do with the conditions under which they were bred and handled as a chick/young bird. If the bird only had lackluster (or worse) experiences with humans, they may not have any reason to mimic them; a bird who has had very positive experiences with humans from day one is a bird who may be more likely to mimic humans. (Disco's vet feels that Disco either thinks he's human or that we're birds; either way, we're members of his flock.) Even if your bird never mimics you, I am sure he loves to hear your voice, and talking and singing to him regularly makes for a great relationship. :)

missdizziest We hear this often, and it never fails to make us laugh. How do these birds know it's another bird speaking to them? Or, even if they don't, what is it that draws them in and causes them to start mimicking him? I think this could truly be an interesting scientific study! :)

Edie Koller He'll talk more in another video, I am sure - he does enough talking for a few birds, but it's hard getting all of it on video where there isn't too much non-Disco noise, or something in the background that, while not too loud, is still audible and also copyright protected. :)

Disco the Parakeet True, I have two birds, a parakeet light blue and white (boy), the other is a cockatiel (girl) the girl is crazy and is pretty much afraid of everything and the boy is very playful and also crazy (he can say like 3 or 4 words).

Dorothea Derickson You said it - and beautifully! Doesn't matter how much or what or IF they mimic - a little mimicry is just icing on an already very sweet cake, I like to say. When someone says/writes, "My bird is too stupid - it won't talk," I point out this very thing... They're all intelligent, all curious, all bright - but all different. (And some have had some not-very-nice starts in life due to bad breeding practices, lack of kind handling as a "product" in a store, even bad ownership by people who consider them throw-away/starter pets that can be left alone in a quiet bedroom all day... So why would a bird want to bond well with and/or mimic a creature that has only given it bad impressions so far? Oh, dear... I usually don't get on a soapbox; it must be the caffeine.)

Disco the Parakeet My family of Disco fans is in Eastern Washington. We have an umbrella cockatoo who is a HUGE Disco fan. He settles her down when nothing else can. But I also think she has feeling she doesn't understand toward Disco!!

ScaledMystic I really am convinced they like the acoustics, they like playing with sound. Why not? We humans do, right? Well, many of us - humans and birds (and other animals, etc.) all have our own personalities, interests, etc. The parrot family is known for its intelligence AND curiosity, so I can totally see why conures, budgies, all the parrots, are into sound and how to manipulate it. (And we all know they like to have fun, too.)

***** We used to have a gigantic one we used as the palace for a Beta Fish given to us (without asking - big no no, but of course we kept and spoiled him anyway... Talk about intelligent and personable fish! But I digress...) but after he met his Beta Maker, my husband turned it into a terrarium or something. BUT... I do have have some wine glasses, some other kinds of interestingly-shaped cocktail glasses, and I should let him explore them at some point. (With supervision, of course!) I have also thought he might find the stand mixer's bowl quite fun, as well. :)

Sorry, missed this! Yes, we're all doing pretty well, thank you - and I hope the same is true by you! As always, Disco is up to his goofy self, and I hope we'll have another video or two out soon... It has been a strange autumn, so videos have been slow in coming...

Disco the Parakeet It's all good! I'm not doing too bad - weather here in north Germany is about as fall as fall can be this time around and I've steered clear of any Christmas Markets so far (cheap mulled wine is the stuff of the devil), so the Holiday Spirit is on a record low this year, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing - it will definitely come once I've comandeered my mother's kitchen to prepare the Christmas meal while the rest of the family is doing God knows what in the living room... Here's to hoping that your winter will turn out a lot better than your autumn - Happy Holidays to the lot of you!

Somehow I missed this, but am glad I found it, even if late. I have to say, I enjoyed the descriptions of your birds (well, the gals), but whoo, I am exhausted from all of their activity, LOL! You are so right about budgies (and yes, pretty much all other non-human animals), they are always themselves, and thank goodness, since "themselves" is pretty wonderful!

Pamela Wilson According to Disco's vet, his brother (coincidentally her client, as well, even though the vet is 1.5 hours away from us and there are other avian vets in Western NY) got the looks, LOL. OK, that is according to his brother's owner, I should say; I think Disco's vet thinks Disco's rather handsome, as well, LOL. I do wonder whether his siblings talk at all, and, if they don't, is it nurture in some cases or just nature, as in the sibling didn't inherit a "super chatty gene" that Disco did... They were all raised by the same woman, who had the birds in the midst of a small but chatty human family - like ours, LOL - and she lavished the same gentle, respectful attention on the parents and babies. So, if they don't talk, why? Genetics? Less chatty environment? Both? Inquiring minds want to know!Sorry - got me at an extra-thoughtful, chatty moment, ha ha!
