This is such a difficult topic to talk about sometimes, so thank you for discussing it. It's hard not to give tips sometimes because we have the 15% tip mentality engrained for most services. Even placing an online pick up order at Chili's or take out, there is an automatic encouraged tip (close to the dine in price). Not sure if it is a covid-19 related phenomenon, but I always feel like tipping (even for a take out) because I know local businesses need support especially now.
Many restaurants and business have grown dependent on tips over the years so in some places they even replace big parts of wages. Easier for a government to just make sure that workers get decent wages instead of having them be reliant on charity.
Its messed up that employees food industry in America have such a low wage. If that wasnt the case, we would really need to tip but I've seen my sister work so hard in that industry but she had to rely on tips because her hourly was around $5
more so due to business owners, cause in the US primarily more southern states, restaurant owners can pay less than min wage on the basis of tips being a servers primary source of income, Arizona is an example, woman was getting paid ~3 bucks even though fed min wage is 7-8
@@andrewdoesyt7787 I'd argue it does have a bit to do with wage and general culture as opposed to just being nice. I'm from the UK and regularly my family eat out without tipping. I'm sure many other families do too.
As a business owner, local businesses pay what they can, if they could pay you more, they would. Increasing the wage could fuck over some businesses entirely and cause them to shut down
There is this one place in our town called Osaka's and it requires you to tip. If you buy 15 dollars of food, then you have to pay like $4 in tips. I feel like this kind of destroys the whole purpose and meaning of tips but at the same time, the waiters receive more money and they might have a family to take care of.
I agree with you a bit in other countries they have a good salary but in america they have a low salary but they get tips so its kind of crazy i think they should have more money tbh
The thing is, our wages are fine, our system is based around the constant movement of people from jobs, for example, the average time people work for restaurants is literally a month and a half, so their wages are low because they’re usually side jobs, jobs on the bottom are supposed to be starters, that’s why the wages are so small. That’s also why it’s so easy to become a manager 😂
Other country’s have an extremely low salary compared to that in the US, but if your comparing it to some extremely rich country like Norway or Germany then that’s your bad judgement.
My area has a $15 minimum wage but it's so expensive to live there, basically living in an urban area will set you back $2,000 a month just in rent. Honestly, it isn't just the wage. You definitely have to take location into factor, and not just by country, but by city as well.
you dont have to be sorry for someone tipping bro....its your hard work and the way you treat your customers.....you earned every single tip you got....keeep up the goood work mann
I think people are tipping more because they appreciate you being there and open in a time when a lot of business have closed permanently. There are also people that appreciate the fact that you are working at all, in a time when many will not.
I completely agree 100% with you. I worked for tips but would feel bad if a customer would do that too. Buy something, to make sure their is a tip for me.
Whenever someone gives me something, i have the URGE to give something back to them but when they refuse, i feel like when they give me somethin, it just makes me feel selfish TvT
If you have the money, tipping is a nice gesture it’s not necessary but if someone’s having a bad day it could put a smile on their face, but if you can’t you don’t have to at all
I never get why the US is so big on tips. Waiters and cafe workers basically live off of tips from what i know and some places even expect you to tip. I don't get why people have to pay for something and then pay some extra on top. Sure, give a tip if you feel generous and appreciative of the service you got, but i don't know why people should be expected to tip all the time. If the business is run right, just paying for the product/service is enough to cover the expenses, as well as the payments for the employees. With the constant 20% tip culture or habit or whatever, the business essentially doesn't give a shit about the employees and the employees depend on the customer to give more money over what they paid for. Doesn't sound right.
I think people realize nice food workers are hard to come by so they tip hoping they stay, which is really the owners fault/responsibility not the customers fault for not paying properly.
Tipping is only normal for trolly boys in my country as they are underpaid, and wait staff are usually paid minimum wage yet because of America influence they are making you feel like you have to pay and in the fancy ones/American owned stores they already include a large tip. Which is total crap because those employees have to be paid minimum wage at least. Here most store attendants aren't paid enough and it is even discouraged to tip them by the owners. Tips are nice if actually earned, if it wasn't good enough service do not demand it as the customers aren't your employers. And yes I've worked retail, house keeping and babysitting; the last two are also underpaid and harder than waiting.
Having worked both FOH and BOH in food service, I always saw tips as an incentive to work in the industry. I have a passion for cooking and want to provide a great dining experience for people but often times customers are entitled and rude and snotty and I just wanna tell them to gtfo. One time I had a FOH job and I'm not usually an anxious person but every night after work I would cry in the car in the parking lot because my anxiety was through the roof and I was usually starving. It was a 12 hr/day 6 days/week job and half the time I wouldn't even get the chance to eat or go to the bathroom for the entire time but I put up with it because I made more there with the tip out than my previous job in fast food.
My brother used to work at a restaurant and he used to bring his cut from the tip jar every month or so… one time he told me this exact thing happened to him… but the catch was that the 5 buck tip was more than double the price of the Borgir she bought
even though being nice is a human trait a lot of people wont be nice. they may tip because they had bad experience with people so a lot might have to get used to people tipping them for just being nice,
Same. I'm a poor college student, and if tipped every time I ate out, it'll cut into my expenses in other places. And I see other comments saying how you tip because you are nice or for the good service, but for me, the way I see it, if people don't tip, others see them as a cunt, and if they tip less than 2 dollar, they're a little shit, and it sucks for people who just can't always tip.
The whole concept of tipping is kind of stupid because instead of paying normal price and the workers making more money per hour, you have to give someone money afterwards, just for that money to be split to all the employees. Shouldn't it just be if you had good service you tip, but the price is normal price for things, and the tip isn't shared, but it is a reward for being so nice to your customers.
Fruits and dairy products shouldn’t be mixed together, this rolled up icecteam isn’t that good it, the rolled up icecream can make your stomach hurt very bad. No hate tho just saying :)
