Is Tom Brady REALLY the Greatest of All Time?

You can come up with all of the excuses you want and talk about what woulda,coulda and shoulda happened but Tom Brady's resume speaks for itself

If you use charts for comparison, you have to start the y axis from 0. The chart at 4:16 looks a lot different when you can see that Jerry has ~1.76x as many yards as the 20th ranked guy and ~1.31x the second ranked, whereas Tom has ~2.46x as many touchdowns as the 20th ranked and 1.13x the second ranked. Jerry is great, but those are what I'd call 'clickbait graphics'.

Age plays a major role in qb performance, besides there are many one hit wonders or five year performances like priest Holmes or Todd gurley but longevity doesn’t exist. Also add on the two seasons he couldn’t play due to injury or benched to that chart and Tom is basically tied with these ideal young qbs that supposedly will never decline. There is also something to be said for the way he runs the game.

The reason why Brady is #1 by a decent margin in football is because QB plays a much, much more effective role in the offense than a receiver does. You can compare Jim Brown's numbers to his era, Rice's numbers to his era, and Brady's numbers to his era, and you'd find Brady isn't that far off from the other QBs in his own era. That said, QB is such a more impactful position than a WR or RB these days could ever be. For an example take, a QB being top 3 in passing yards in a 5-year stretch with playoff moments AND numbers to back it up is more impressive than a receiver who has 2,000 more receiving yards than 2nd place in a 5-year stretch. It's all about the player and the position. Jerry Rice is the GOAT receiver in my books by far, and the only player that surpasses him on my list is Brady. Jim Brown, Lawrence Taylor, and Reggie White are all a close 3-5. The QB has more impact to the offense than even the head coach these days in football. That isn't to say Zach Wilson is better at QB than Robert Saleh is at coaching the Jets, just a balancing act between the two. You can have a great head coach, but the QB is more important. This also isn't to say that a superstar QB can win the super bowl with below average players all around him. This more just overall says that a top 3 QB is more beneficial with an average head coach and average players around him than a top 3 head coach with average players and an average QB.

Although I'm one of those people who do stand in the "Brady is the GOAT" camp, I gotta say this is still definitely a valid question. The GOAT debate has a ton of factors, and it's for sure not a settled one yet, and it's only going to get closer as the current era players' careers develop. And I gotta say, this was a great video. This was great retrospect into the nuance of the question. It’s such a hard question to answer. Patrick Mahomes lost to the Lions week 1, importantly without Travis Kelce, who is a key part to his abilities to pass efficiently. This is not to put Mahomes on fraud alert because Mahomes is a legend, however, how he’ll do without Kelce, is a question that must be answered

Hes the goat of qbs and football alone doing more than any player ever could. Physically demanding or not its unbelievable what Tom has done, and thats coming from a Saints fan. He went to the bucs and went straight to the superbowl that same year and won it. No other player in history could've done that.

Jerry Rice, my God, 20 years as a wide receiver. I mean even good WR's will likely only last about 5-7 years before loss of speed, and injuries catch up with them. Hence, I love seeing how the great 10 year plus players evolve, from often being flat-out speed merchants, to slower, but more wily vet's with impeccable positioning and timing.

Although an interesting idea, I don't think that there can be a comparison between different positions due to the completely differing impacts that each position can have on the game

Patrick Mahomes is the only current player with a real chance to threaten Brady.

You can’t assume production would sustain over a prolonged period of time because that’s partly what makes Brady so impressive.

Jim Brown is a beast but what role did blocking have in his success? I noticed some blocks in the highlights that would be illegal today. I think that would be an important caveat.

certainly very interesting to think about. its hard to say who the best player truly is, but id still absolutely take brady on my team over anyone else, however him being a quarterback does give him an advantage there.

Also, is it taking into account that for 10 years Brady played in a completely different NFL. Statistically, the number of run plays per game drastically decreased after 2008 once these high powered passing offenses began being used. For a lot of the early and mid 2000’s, the Patriots did not pass a whole lot. While now, you see these 35-50+ pass attempts per game almost every week

There’s so much that goes in to being considered the greatest of all time. Stats are great and so are graphs, but there’s an It factor. Patrick Mahomes seems to have the It factor,question is, can you continue to produce over an entire career with coaching changes , the coming and going of teammates,injuries,etc. Playing at a high-level and continuing to win over a 20+ year career is completely nuts .

History defines itself

If you did the same thing with wrs as you did qbs at the end of the video, justin jefferson would have almost 5,000 more receiving yards than jerry rice if he played the same amount of years he did. But that doesn’t mean jerry rice isn’t one of the greatest of all time, so I just don’t find that stat as an arguable claim for either brady or rice.

To convince me of anything about any of these greats, you’re gonna need a chart summarizing feelings of friends and families, all players on both sides of the ball, weather, altitude, weird bounces, bad kicks, dropped kicks, dropped passes, penalties, bad calls, missed calls, owners, all coaching staffs, esp play callers - for starters. And a methodology correctly weighting all factors, successful over years. And then we can have the real argument for ranking - stats, or what all saw as observant unbiased accurate-memoried fans.

I grew up watching Jerry Rice. He is still my favourite player but seven rings closes the argument.

I think one big issue I saw with this is that you decided to compare touchdown numbers to yard numbers. It’d be far more convincing had you chosen to do TD to TD or Yard to Yard however it wouldn’t show as big of a gap as you’re claiming there to be which I think may have been done on purpose.

I have always had Jerry Rice as the GOAT. Having a video that finally says that there is a legit argument behind it is awesome.

Obviously you haven't heard of Deion Abdul-Rauf. THE GOAT, 6x Super Bowl MVP, 2x World Cup winner, 18 NBA Finals MVP, and he's even led the New Jersey Devils to the Stanley Cup.

To be more accurate in scaling the current players, you need to look at their play style and compare them to other players who have the similar play style who are no longer in the league. Plus, you need to add in the probability that their supporting staff will also decline (2019 Patriots). Also consider coaching changes, rule changes, and changes in the game. There is a reason why the longevity Tom Brady, Payton Manning, and Drew Brees is so rare.

Jerry Rice was also grandfathered in to being allowed to use stickum for years. While people couldn’t then, and can’t today. Not trying to put an asterisk on him. But at least Brady was only deflating balls. 😂

I’d say imho Tom is the Goat due to impact and influence of QB or his leadership and clutch ability be it accolades Records or stats especially the playoffs which he’s got double the Tds or yards of second place he’s earned it, but I wouldn’t fault those who have a different opinion to each there own or agree to disagree ngl

I like the approach of the video, but these stats are taken without any contextual consideration. For example, pass yards are a bad metric as you could be up 40 at the end of the fourth quarter, so somebody with a worse performing team may look better in terms of yards. Also, era matters as the way the game is played has changed over time. The only way to go about making comparisons would be to look at something like value added (something similar to war in baseball).

I love Jerry, but remember he also played the majority of his career with Hall of Fame Quarterbacks throwing him the rock, I do not see ANY OTHER PLAYER in the top 20 who can boast such a privilege. You can divide Tom Brady's career into 3 separate Hall of Fame careers. I dare you to find ANY OTHER PLAYER from ANY OTHER SPORT who can boast such a claim. In fact, very few could even divide their careers into two HOF careers, to have three is just completely insane. GOAT

Brady has 3 HOF careers if you ever saw Nick Wright's segment, over 20 years. I got to meet Jerry Rice back in 1990 when I lived up in San Francisco. One of the best players of all time. And yes the league was different then. But Brady still played in part of that league before the rules started changing in the late 2000's. Anyone who looks at everything, and says Brady isn't the GOAT of all NFL players, can't truly appreciate what he has done, in an era that is designed AGAINST dominance by one player or team due to the salary cap and free agency rules. He has had a greater revolving door of personnel around him than any player in history. Interesting video, but not good enough for my sub. Keep it up though. One other thing. Trying to speculate how many passing TD's Herbert and Mahomes will get in their career is so many what ifs that doesn't take into account factors like injury, rule changes, personnel changes, is juvenile at best. What Brady did was never done before, and his playstyle, and dedication to health won't be matched by them. They require more mobility than he ever did, and they won't take the team friendly salaries that he took over 20 years, so their teams long term won't be able to afford to keep reloading on players.

In terms of championships volume supercedes efficiency. Anyone who thinks different is a failure and probably would benefit in going back to grade school to learn how to count. lol

Extrapolating numbers of players in their prime over a timespan like that is kind of a bad argument. First of all, playing as long as brady did (half of his career being in a more physical era) is an achievement in and of itself. So is playing at such a high level for such a long time. Doing what you did kind of throws all of that out the window and I would bet a significant amount of money that justin herbert will not retire with the 2nd most tds of all time lmao

Great vid. I will say Rice has far more separation from other great WRs than Brady has over other QBs. And he matches Brady's longevity at a position where it's harder to do so, whilst playing in a more physical era as well. Also he was an All Pro in his 40s..as a WR, which might be the biggest athletic achievement in NFL history. IMO Jerry Rice and Jim Brown are the 2 greatest players ever...Brady iis just after them. Modern backs have caught up to Brown's stats but none had his peak and he played fewer games in a far more punishing era too.

Mahommes has a chance to surpass Brady as GOAT, but so much goes into that discussion that even that seems unlikely: longevity, clutchness, stats, championships.

Tom Brady has the greatest resume in NFL history and arguably sports history. More rings than any franchise, 70% win rate in the super bowl, almost a 50% appearance rate to the super bowl, by far the most comeback wins, game winning drives, and playoffs wins in nfl history by any player. he has over 100k passing yards. To top it all of he played against the some of the greatest defenses in nfl history. 1996-2005 tampa bay, legion of boom 20011-18, 2005-10 steelers, 2000-11 ravens. This aint a debate bruh.
