Which is what H.E.R was. Pretty every artist before the internet era could be called an industry plant so that convo is dumb. Raury was an example of an artist where they made it look like his growth was purely from the internet but he was really a label creation. Nowadays the labels have infiltrated the internet so much that he’s pretty much every new artist is a plant. We just did a long 360 back to status quo

To me, a plant is someone who is(sometimes) a talented artist with no push or bankable identity that a label grabs up, creates a new image and/or sound for, then introduces to the world as some new artist.

Here's the thing. I don't care. The "industry" controls 95% of the artist we listen to anyway just solely by distribution. If I enjoy the music I enjoy it. Plant isn’t a bad thing completely. It’s a way that the music industry works in one way. In Asia. That’s how they make groups. They are all plants. They are brought together and create these groups and their personalities and styles that’s plant behavior. The solo artist are usually branches off of a group BTS BLACKPINK all of those groups were manufactured and the stars that come out of them are the most popular members of the manufactured group. Not all plants are successful or failures. It’s not really a determining factor of being a plant. Jumex and baby goth are known plants for being unknown artist who got a corporate makeover.

If you think "plants" are artists that achieve seemingly sudden success due to label backing, then yea, they're probably pretty common. And for a long time, that was the go to method. I see what you are saying but i think we should somehow distinguish taste makers knowing when they should push something strong vs being a plant. I think Rory's simply tryina say that an industry plant is somebody who gets help to any degree in their journey by important members of the music industry. Like with an actual plant, you water it, place it in breathable soil, let it receive sunlight, and it grows...same thing. Nothing to do with ability or talent. With the music industry, H.E.R. was consistently placed in proper soil (rooms where her talent was exposed), Grammy and academy conversations with, and worked the industry very well. I think what rory is saying is valid but it makes me wonder should an industry plant definition be modified to be specific only to those within this modern era and are not talented or if including those that are talented also got their buzz from the label or not organically by their own artistry. The people who think Tommy Richman is a plant are people who are revealing that they really aren't tapped into music like they think they are. So he releases music for 5 years building his sound, finds bits of success in the first 2-3 years, makes some connections with other musicians, opens for Brent Faiyaz, then gets a viral tik tok snippet which got him his first hit. What about this makes him a "plant"? This is a very normal journey of a new musician. The term is so loosely used these days and it's always to discredit the success of an artist.
