You were amazing. I do have a question. Am I wrong that I don’t see white or black? I just think we are all the same just different color skin. Should I be educated more on race? I just never really thought of black or white as different. And my youngest child who is intellectually delayed, thinks of it as gray and brown. I don’t explain much one because he won’t be able to comprehend to much and two because I didn’t feel the need to make it seem like brown (black) and gray (white) are different. We are all the same, bleed one color.

How were they condescending to Christy? Let me guess, you're white. You sound ridiculous. There was no on there being condescending to Christy. This was a completely open space to have a very important subject and they all did great. If you thought they were condescending please be specific. You can't just throw out a statement like that without an example. What you term as condescending seems like what you are really saying is you don't like black people teaching a white person. I watched this episode until the end but it left me feeling disappointed. It felt like there were multiple different conversations happening here and the interviewees did not mesh well together. Toni had so many interesting things to say and a wealth of knowledge and experience, but she was trying to get into why the system as a whole is broken (which is a much more broad issue). Then there was Rebekah, who had very strong feelings about being transracially adopted, yet she also has a somewhat unique experience in that she was the only black person (beside her siblings) for miles around. Then, lastly, you have two parents who have adopted transracially and clearly don't want to be told they're awful for having adopted their kids, but we hear from them the least. The issue is much more complicated than what can be handled here and the host interrupted the guests frequently just when they seemed like they were making some good points.

I think this is a very complex issue that deserved more time. That being said, I am appalled at the tone of the interview and the seemingly lack of preparation by the interviewer. It is fine for people to have differing opinions, but one story is not all stories, and even if the system is not ideal, why not uplift and support people who are trying to make a change.

That's how I felt as well. I also did not like how both Christy and Kimberly kept getting cut off when they brought up positive points about transracial adoptions, even though it was their experience, it still was how they were doing right by their children. It seemed as if this panel was only to bring up the bad side of the industry instead of both.

While I appreciate the diverse views on the topic, the overall tone seemed a little negative towards transracial adoption and can be discouraging for people looking to adopt. I also think it needs to be clarified that the process to adopt children from foster care is not the same as direct adoption. First, most foster care agencies do not even give foster parents the option to give race preferences for children. The only preference options given are in terms of age, gender, and if the foster parent(s) is willing to take sibling groups and children with special needs. Kim and Christy both adopted their children through foster care. The guest Toni asked why white people are not adopting white kids. I am confused with her experience how she does not know the answer to this question. A lot of white people are not adopting white kids because the majority in the system are older. Older kids are the least likely to be adopted. Infants and toddlers are the highest in demand (white infants/toddlers in particular), which means they are the hardest to get, given the demand and fact most kids in the system are older. White people looking to adopt who cannot get white infants/toddlers (younger children), often adopt younger children of color because they would rather have a younger child of color than an older white child. For many people looking to adopt, the age of the child is more important to them than the race of the child.
@natyra22
@natyra22 3 года назад
I just wanted add that they should have included a white transracial adoptee who grew up with black adoptive parents. Or simply another black transracial adoptee that has actually had a positive experience to counter Rebekah's experience. The conversation from the adoptee perspective was very one-sided. Rebekah being against transracial adoption seems based merely on her personal experience that unfortunately turned out to not be ideal. While her experience is absolutely valid to the conversation, it is not enough for me to be convinced the entire system should be axed/redone as she stated. I need some stats/data. Show me the stats that indicate most transracial adoptees are miserable/unhappy being transracial adoptees and that the current system is failing a majority of transracial adoptees. Because so far, I have met two transracial adoptees, a black male (my previous college roommate) and an Asian female (a close friend I have back home). Both love their adoptive parents/families and are not displeased being transracial adoptees. Did they experience challenges growing up? Of course. However, both expressed despite those challenges, they are thankful for their adoptive parents and that they did not have to go through the hardship of growing up in the system parentless. I say this to point out, Rebekah's experience while important, is one story in the many stories of transracial adoptees. Exceptions do not make the rule. If stories like Rebekah's are not exceptions and happen to be standard, show me the research indicating this.

@@HoldenItDown , I follow you and Christy and both of you are great moms. I felt a lot of negative directed at both of you that isn't warranted. Also, it feels like ya'll were there as props and were not relevant to the discussion. Is the foster/adoptive world broken? Yes it is and based on what I have heard here that won't be changing anytime soon. You and Christy have a wealth of experience to share and basically none of that was shared because of time spent talking about racism. I understand racism is alive and well but I think there should be more time and energy put into educating and mentoring perspective adoptive parents no matter what race of child they adopt. At the end of the day all that matters is that a child feels love, accepted and comfortable in their own skin and allowed and encouraged to be who they are. Ya'll have amazing things for your babies and you both should be able to share what you have learned. Your babies have a unique foundation to grow from and all of them will grow to be well rounded individuals and be confident of who they are knowing that they have the best advocates on their side. I am a transracial/ biracial adoptee. So same situation as Rebekah but I'm also biracial. The white mother they are interviewing is leaps and bounds ahead of my conservative Christian mother on understanding racism. The white mother Christy I think her name was. She is doing a great job carrying the torch. I walked around looking a mess as a child once I left my grandmother's care around 4. My white grandmother was serious about keeping me looking nice and cute but as soon as we moved away and it was just my adoptive mom I looked like a homeless person. It affected my self esteem so badly growing up. Pretty much up until about two years ago I thought I was a hideous monster just because my hair wouldn't lay completely flat. I actually had hair down past my chest that was full and thick and I thought it made me look like a savage. Now looking back I was actually beautiful but I have body dysmorphia from being molested by too many white Christian conservatives males and also being the only black kid in white private schools etc. My brain basically broke.

It's interesting to me how most are saying the older woman and the younger woman are angry for expressing their experiences, but the other two women are awesome and so positive because they adopted children of different races and the experience has been more on the pleasant side. But no one is looking at why the experiences are so different. One woman has been a social worker for decades and one is speaking for her own personal adoption story, compared to two women who just decided to adopt for different reasons. I'm not sure why people with no kind of mental balance make such ignorant comments. This conversation was a deep but on the surface conversation that was very easy to understand simply from the age and background differences. I understood all sides and see nothing right or wrong about it just different perspective. Also, if we are going to pretend that the history of how black people have been treated in America has had no effect on the adoption system then you should not be involved with this conversation. Grow up some of you.

I work with kids in the system. They come from multiple backgrounds, ethnicities, and races. I have watched kids come into the facility were I work with absolutely no hope of being reunited with bio parents due to them not caring or wanting to work their program. I have had to watch these kids go months and years just waiting for a foster family to open up or that was a match. I applaud any and all people who find it in their hearts to become foster parents because we need them. I don't judge a person for wanting to adopt a child that does not share their color or ethnicity, because if you are willing to love that kiddo, please do. If you are willing to give them the best chance they can have at a better future than staying stuck in our foster care system, please do. We do so much of focusing on skin color. I love my kiddos no matter who the are or what color skin they have. As a white woman, I have had many children of color in my facility and guess what, I learned how to care for them! I've learned how to care for their hair and skin. I've asked questions and watched videos because I want them to feel just as special and respected as the white kids I care for. What it comes down to is instead of hating on the people caring for kids that are not the same race as them, we need to be lifting each other up and supporting one another. Love goes a long way in the healing process. I've seen one of my kiddos go from being super aggressive and closed off emotionally to one of the sweetest kids you would ever meet; loving and open to all. Guess what.....Most of the people loving them did not share their skin color. Because at the end of the day, all they wanted to know was that you loved them and that were so worthy to be loved. They wanted to be hugged and comforted when they cried. Love each other.

I know I'm late to the party, but I finally got to watch this interview with two of my favorite RU-vid moms and it was so not what I was expecting. There was so much negativity and resentment presented here, that really detracted from the subject of transracial adoptions. The social worker seemed upset with Kim for adopting Lizzie and Eddie who appear white and with Christy and her husband Ed for adopting Ace, Avaya and Eliyah who are black. She kept complaining about how it would be better for kids to be adopted by their own race. Plus she made it seem like DCF does not provide black families the same resources and support as whites families. Had the host and her other guess done their research on Kim and Christy, they would have known about Kim and Christy's issues with the foster care system and the biological parents. Also the host kept cutting Kim and Christy off. She should of just had the transracially adopted girl on to complain about her horrific life and the social worker to vent about the foster care system and adoption from her perspective. Also, as you recall, the adopted young lady made it seem like she was the only black person in her home and town. Then later she mentions she has two African American siblings. The whole thing was just weird. Someday I hope that Kim and Christy will get together and do a real Q & A on transracial adoptions. It would be far more informative then this Tammi Mac show.

I would take in a different culture in a minute to whatever God pointed me towards and that's what I believe that these 2 ladies here did. I watch Kimberly fix her daughter's hair as though she is a black child and I and I am ultimately in love with her for this. there is absolutely nothing wrong with this period! I love her all the more for treating her as though she is her child. These ladies do more for their children than most families I know that have their own birth children. I agree with the adoption system the kids are not just white they are mix race and it should be acknowledge and the kids should know that rather people can observe that are not when they come across them. Being in a loving mix family is better than being in abusive home. They should come with programs to helps with the process. discrimination against black people should not be happening. It is nice when you can black family together and they are great parents like any other ethnicity.

I'm a black person and I found like she was being chastised. The young lady seems to have a lot of bitterness and that's probably due to her experience with other children, but I found it unfair for her to say these people shouldn't adopt these people....Sometimes we forget that God made everyone and we allow what others are saying to affect us. Kudos to both moms for doing the best they can for their children and keeping the conversation open with them.

@@kaym.2854 I kind of felt that, too. Both of these mothers have already experienced a lot of hate although they are trying their best to do right by their kids. For that young lady to say that she disagrees completely with interracial adoption because her family was uneducated and did not provide the support that she and her siblings needed must have been really disheartening for those two mothers to hear, because you can tell that this is the thing they fear most for their own children. This is why interracial adoption needs to be talked about more, that way parents considering adoption are as educated as these two mothers. As Kim has said on her own channel, when you want to adopt, the best, and sometimes only, way to go about this is to start out as a foster parent. You have the child for a while and if the biological family cannot have the child back, then the children are put up for adoption. Most of the time, these children have already formed a close bond with the foster parents so they are considered first as candidates to adopt them. It makes sense. Also, like both mothers have said, when you are a foster parent, you really don't pick out which kids come to you. These kids need homes and parental figures right away. What kind of soulless person would say, "Oh I can't take this child because they are a different color?" That is so wrong and could lead to a lot of children never getting a home.

The adoption system is a huge part of the problem itself.. That's why families were running to other countries such as China. Because America adoption is so difficult!! I think both Kim and Christy adopted through foster care system. In Rebekah's situation, it's the adoption process fault because they should have requirements in place that state in raising different race children there should be experiences provided relating to the child's race. For example, Many of the Chinese children being adopted have formed meet-up groups and offer their children Chinese classes. Where they not only learn the language, but culture as well. So when they grow up they have an understanding of their heritage.

I believe more black families should be approved to adopt… 💯 However what do the critics want to happen exactly with the black children who are languishing in foster homes (most who are white) and who need to be adopted?

It's because you believed the media who said the Proud Boys are racist. That's why you can't reconcile why he can love his wife and children. So sad how so much racism is assumed and how many lies are believed. It's too bad that there wasn't more of a focus on the positive of what all the speakers have in common and how they could assist each other in helpful ways. All agreed that culture and identity are important, so that could have been the focus.

@@negusphilemon5439 yeah but you are ignoring how language actually works. Most people know what you mean when you say white person or black person. No one says european American. No one knows what that means. Like if some said British American or French American you know that persons family came from brittian or France. European American could mean any number of things and it doesn't necessarily mean that person is white. There are plenty of POCs living in Europe. European doesn't mean white skined. Look all I'm saying is your criticism seems a bit off given that what you want isn't even part of our cultural vernacular. And also it has nothing to do with the actual content of the video

Females, you need to stop being so political correct because you are the one and the reason why the children are suffering you are the reason why indigenous Aboriginal native and black suffer so much. What is your purpose because I'm a matter of fact you have turned all the indigenous Aboriginal native and black men's against you so so what's your point. Everybody talk but do anyone remember Josephine Baker because at the end of this journey you must love the children the children must come before yourself regardless whether you born a child out of your womb or not for whatever reason women's did not have a baby out of their womb you will always be part of creation and life and Mother Earth and until we as women at knowledge this and give accountability for the failure as a female as Mother Earth our children will continue to suffer as indigenous Aboriginal native and black children.
