Fun Fact: The US box art was so bad, that when they released the game in PAL territories, they asked gaming magazine, Computer and Video Games if they could use the artwork they drew for their magazine cover as the official art!

I played the Japanese version of this game. It's actually good, when the characters are low health they start bleeding on their faces. And there's actually ending cutscenes on each of these characters, and there's actually a Dialogue when you won or lose like Street fighter. The Japanese version of Tuff E Nuff Dead Dance is overall better.

Lol. You LITERALLY retold EXACTLY how I ended up renting this game. Everything I wanted was long gone... and I rented this game on the basis of the title alone. And my weekend was ruined. Honestly I think that’s kind of where my life started going wrong. I still haven’t recovered. I was not Tuff E’ Nuff. It wasn’t the worst thing ever, but I really hoped this was going to be a beat em up, not a 1v1 fighter. All they had was a black and white photocopied cover/back but the copy was so bad/dark you couldn’t see any of the screenshots.

You're totally right, this game was always there every time I went to the video store. I never checked it out. The cover even back then was incredibly stupid. I don't think I even picked it up to read the back of the box because I didn't even realize it was a fighting game. Considering that you're also a graphic design major I wonder what you think about the typography. It's like the cover is screaming at you - I just interpret as white noise and move past it. Was this '90s marketing technique ever successful - the angry guy yelling at you? It reminds me of the Sega CD commercial and I don't think they sold many Sega CDs with that ad either.

WHAT THE EXOTIC MOVES ACTUALLY WERE: If you got into a good rhythm and beat several characters in a row without a continue (excluding the first 4) then your normal special moves would upgrade. They'd become larger area of effects (like, at max level your fireball would be as tall as your character) and the animations would get progressively more intricate. If a move started out as an uppercut with a little fire on your fist, then by the final boss the same move would have your body surrounded by a flaming dragon. It was actually a pretty cool reward system for getting far.

Heh, fun fact: I just played this game last week for the first time. Why? probably the only other reason aside from what you told: to tick it off the list. Your explanation was spot on, not bad, just... average. The ´Exotic Techniques´ thing go like this: first, yeah, that´s a fancy way to say ´Special Moves´, and every 2 or 3 fights they would evolve: fireballs would get bigger, physical attacks got a visible aura, etc, etc. But that was just a cosmetic upgrade, because your tiny initial fireball and the awesome dragon-headed one from the last stages did the exact amount of damage... But hey, it counts for something, right? I did like the character design, though. And the difficulty was just right. PEACE!

Hey Drunk, the powering up your moves is a story mode only thing. For instance, Zazi will start off the first match with only his hand glowing when he does his thunder punch. The "upgradeable exotic technique" you're talking about is simply alluding to the fact that your special moves get cooler and more flashy looking as you progress in the main story mode. I don't even think you have to do anything, they just change from one fight to the next, usually getting bigger hitboxes or more damage, or whatever. It's a nice touch, but it's not exactly a selling point like the back of the box makes it out to be. Also, who the hell is that guy on the cover? I don't recognize that guy anywhere in the actual game.
@SilverHunterN
@SilverHunterN 2 года назад
That guy is Jade, the final boss of the game. He's basically M Bison, and Jaleco even nicked the story idea of "Girl wants to avenge her daddy by killing the final boss". In other words, Kotono wants to avenge her dad in the exact same way Chun li does.

I rented this (along with such gems as BioMetal and X-Kaliber 2097) from the local Safeway in the tiny little town in Alaska where I grew up. (We didn't get a Blockbuster until after I had already moved away after high school.) None of the rental carts had the original artwork or boxes, they all just had giant labels with the game manual text typed out in generic tiny print. Needless to say, renting games there was a total crapshoot.

I got the japanese version as a child and I gotta say I loved every bit of it. Being a "humble" game, it has a lot of details in the stages and though the four characters were not that interesting, the mood was superb. One of my childhood classics.

Ah, Dead Dance. I really liked this! Edit: I assume exotic techniques meant the specials like the fireball, and they all upgrade naturally as you climb the tower beating CPU fighters in story, I can't say I ever noticed a difference, the moves just looked flashier. Ryu-clones' fireball, for instance, got bigger, then bigger, then becomes a dragon head is memory serves.

The special attacks are upgraded as you progress through the game, that's all that means. Notice that Kotono's kunai daggers have a glowing effect in the later stages. Tuff E Nuff gets a brief mention in Jaleco's later game Game Tengoku, a shooter that doubles as satire of the arcade gaming culture. The silly art is used as the backboard of a pinball machine in the first stage.

I love how the missile silo is the 2nd floor of the tower. Oh boy, someday the upper floor bosses gonna have a hell of a surprise...

I always tried the Street Fighter button combos when playing a new fighting game from this era. Most of the time, they worked.

This was my second SNES game (after Super Mario World, which I found inside the SNES box). I remember being stuck on my bed during the summer for an accident when I was 7 and my dad bringing home this game (the European box art is way more serious and captivating). He said "I was looking for Power Rangers but it was sold out everywhere. The guy at the store said it was similar to this". It was NOT similar at all, bit I'm glad. I loved the hell out of this gamr, played it so much and still do. It has something that stands out for some reason.. Maybe the music and overall tone of the game. It's average, yes. But still a must play for SNES gamers (and I would also say it's among the very good games on the system).

Hey man, I know you may never see this, but thank you for your channel. Your videos are always pleasant to watch, you seem enthusiastic about your work here, and I really appreciate the time you put into making these videos. The dedication to dissecting the artistry of older console generations and their games is something really fascinating to behold, and I think you're doing an amazing job. Thanks again!

I've heard of Tuff E Nuff before, but for some reason I always thought it was a side-scrolling beat 'em up like Final Fight. Looking at the box, it proudly proclaims there are "4 colorful main characters to fight as," so that's probably the reason for my confusion. 4 playable characters is typical for a beat 'em up, but what fighting game only has 4 characters? Or, in this case, has a roster of 11, but only lets you play as 4 people for some reason.

I remember I did a playthrough and the US got a 'Congratulations' screen. Either play on Easy or Hard, it's not worth it. The Japanese release has 4 endings on the Heroes if you play the hard difficulty, of course. VGMuseum has a translate rom of that. But hard to find it.

In the story mode as you progress the main two characters reverse punch gets bigger like the glow effects. But only in the story mode.

As you play through the story mode, your special moves level up through several levels. It is pretty novel. Also, yeah, those guys play like ken and ryu when you only use the 2 moves that they share with ken and ryu. Try to hit select when picking a character in vs. mode. Also, a specific projectile that passed through other projectiles on one character was something unique.

@0:52 and 1:10. Both these stages look like places from the series Yu Yu Hakusho. @0:52 it looks like the parking lot garage the younger Toguro brother took Yusuke to to show off his power. @1:10 it looks like the dark tournament stadium.

Jaleco had a run of beat-em-ups & SFII clones in the SNES era that were good enough to play but in general weren't great games. They were the consolation prize compared to most of what Nintendo, Capcom, Konami & others pumped out in those days. I enjoyed renting them but I never did end up buying any Jaleco games back then.

I remember renting this one because it was about the only thing available at 7PM on a Friday night back then, and the cover art looked like the comics I liked so why not. It was actually much better than I was expecting and even today I find the fights memorable, like the final one on the roof. I might have even rented it a second time intentionally.

This was the fighting game I played the most after SF2 Turbo on the Snes. Back then I never thought about SF clones so much as assuming that the SF style was just so good all fighting games should use it. Love the game's ost to this day and the sprite work is also really impressive at times. Thanks for covering a childhood favourite.

I enjoyed this game back when I played it, but the excessive hit-stop that happens every time an attack lands is definitely a huge deal breaker.
