Mesh based home networking has taken then world by storm. Sure it's convenient but it has it's drawbacks. I don't like compromise and in part research and part leap of faith I purchased a ton of Ubiquiti's hardware to give my new house a SERIOUS upgrade. Come find out why I did it with a complete new Ubiquiti Unifi system headed up by a Unifi Dream Machine Pro. Bonus, the Unifi Protect system comes with the dream machine and paired with Unifi Protect G4 Pro Cameras is amazing. Come see my Unifi setup and learn how I put together the configuration and determine if the system I have Ubiquiti Unifi worth it.

Thanks for the video! It looks like you have a similar setup as I am attempting to configure in my home. I have recently purchased and installed a UDM-PRO and I am trying to set up a separate VLAN for my IoT devices (including SONOS). I noticed you have SONOS in your system as well. A video on how you successfully got SONOS working with your UDM-PRO and VLAN connectivity would be helpful. Also, +1 for Home Assistant!

@JohnCMancini

@@johnsfilmsllc I have done that. The complexity comes when I have my mobile device (or my computer) on the main LAN and having the traffic flow between the two so that I can control them via Home Assistant, or the Sonos App (Windows/iOS). Also, for some reason, my speakers do not show up in the client list independently. I have a single entry in the client list for Sonos and the display of the IP address cycles between the IP addresses of each speaker. It's very weird. Thanks and keep up the good work!

This gear is like 3 or 4 years old now. I don't know which future direction I'll take. With a mesh WiFi network (or any WiFi) I need 6 access points and I'd like a physical cable for backhaul. Do you have IP passthrough mode enabled and if so, do you have any tips on how to best do this so that UDMP does all the routing? Also, any noticeable wifi performance improvements with your UniFi APs vs WiFi 6 that the BGW320 ships with? @johnsfilmsllc
@johnsfilmsllc 2 года назад
Perfect questions to ask. If I did it again I would have had the builder put a vent in the top of the closet, probably passive so it doesn’t make the noise like the ones in the bathroom or I might have printed a mount and put a noctua fan up there. As it is the system runs in acceptable bounds for heat however, the server I have on the shelf below it is a TrueNas Scale server. The disk array in it, the drives ran too hot for too long and my zfs pools had issues with drive integrity. I replaced them, mounted giant noctua’s in the front of the chassis and increased airflow…now I have zero issues….yes…it is warmer over there but isn’t terrible ;) I have some small temp sensors running there - i’ts in the low 80’s…

I haven't yet set multiple AP before. Thanks for your great quick and most helpful videos.
@johnsfilmsllc
@johnsfilmsllc 3 года назад
The setup works a bit differently. 1) wire the AP up and adopt it to your UDMpro. 2) You create the wireless networks you need in the setting area of the udm pro software 3) you configure the APs to broadcast any of the networks you want them to. More directly yep they all broadcast the same and you can handle roaming and handoff with radio strengths

Hhahahahah OCD it is!!! I ran pfsense for 4 years prior on a dedicated NetGate 3100. It was solid, the device was quick enough even with DPI on fiber and I appreciated the Snort/suricata integration. That said, it wasn't as accessible for my wife when I was travelling and didn't give the monolithic view of the network I can now see with Unifi. As a firewall it was great but as a network router and visibility layer it left me wanting.

Right, a good chunk of the budget was actually an electrician to do it. You can tailor the AP's to require a minimum connection strength. This makes the device jump as you roam because your former AP becomes unavailable at some point. The drawback is if the only AP available to you has you just on the edge of the "good" zone you will have connectivity issues. Requires some tuning but I can roam my whole property and be happy

Great video I have a 1gb connection that I also want to build a core network and only use ISP modem/router for a bridge to the internet (turn off wifi, DHCP, etc....). Let me ask a question though, what kind of throughput are you getting on wired devices and wireless devices like tablets and phones? I know this is s subjective question based on the NIC's in the devices themselves (old versus new). But, if you have newer NICs in some of those devices I'd be interested to know the bandwidth speeds you're getting. My ISP provider did a wired test and got about 400mb. which I was very dissapointed. I mean why pay for 1gb. if you're only getting 400mb. wired. Right? Thanks, for the video. Sharing, is caring. :-)
@johnsfilmsllc
@johnsfilmsllc 3 года назад
Sharing IS caring! Based on your use of lowercase I think you know but first off, when they sell you a gigabit connection, that is 1000 megabits. Here's where the trip up is for a lot of people, 8 bits make a byte. Why we decided to measure ISP throughput in bits and disk size in bytes is moronic (I have a feeling it was because the ISP's were looking for bigger numbers). Anyway a gigabit connection has a theoretical maximum of 125MB (capital for megaByte) per second. You can see in the video when I show the dashboard 0:50 seconds in if you freeze it. Next to the download and upload circles two numbers, one which is the current utliization of the pipe and 2 which is the tested speed unifi observed. See, I have the dream machine set to run a speed test every 23 hours. When I shot the video it had achieved 948Mbps up and 942Mbps down in the last test. I've seen the same when I plug into the router with a wire connection and test it myself. Yesterday I was pulling 400MBps downloading a game to my xbox. Why so slow? The other end of the connection could be to blame. Microsoft may have capped the top bandwidth possible, might have been under heavy load or who knows. All that said, if your connection isn't pulling closer gigabit speeds at any time no matter what tool you use to test, thats annoying. The distribution of this is fiber to your house, that last leg in most technologies can suffer degradation but in this case, it's light and clean. I'd start to wonder about the neighborhood distribution box they pulled it from and it's bandwith up. Do you live in a neighborhood where every house uses fiber?
@ChrisRWoods-px9hy
@ChrisRWoods-px9hy 3 года назад
@@johnsfilmsllc thanks for response. Seems like you're reaults are similar to mine. From the modem I'll get close to 1gb, but a speed test from a PC for example I'll get something much slower. But, I'm not convinced yet because I have Bell business not residential, which should be a different circuit (with diversity).

@Xanthegreat4

@@johnsfilmsllc Yes, from the UDM PRO SE you can outright throttle and block specific end user devices or middle devices such as my tp link switch, but not do vlan bandwidth limitation. I wanted to send all vlans through a single UDM PRO SE port to my tp link smart switch (This I can do), but it is currently impossible to limit bandwidth per vlan, instead you need to limit bandwidth per device, imagine doing that for an apartment complex, you'd need to constantly be on top of your setup to know what new devices connected to limit their bandwidth, and even that is not a solution since if you want to give a 10/10 speed to an apartment, the sum of all devices in it may exceed the desired limit, the alternative to that is to manually go and change the limits for all devices in that apartment so that the desired speed limit is not exceeded... That is not good. Luckily my Tp link can dedicate ports to tagged and untagged vlans, and can limit U/D speeds per port, this is what I did to cover that hole in the UDM PRO SE's features.
@johnsfilmsllc

Also - for IoT devices that need to be compatible with other devices on the same Vlan, wouldn’t having separate ones for every category of device just be limiting to the full functionality of your devices? @johnsfilmsllc
@johnsfilmsllc 3 года назад
Thanks for watching and great questions, I appreciate the tone of the questions vs the usual "John's an idiot" hah. I went with the 4k cameras for the 3x optical zoom over the g4 bullets and the higher resolution over the g3. Now they only do smart detection on the g4 products and I've found those detections helpful so that would be another reason (though the smart detections weren't around when I designed the network). The IoT devices do need to be able to talk with laptops or whatever in some cases. This is why I've enabled a "allow established and related" rule in addition to creating the "reject IoT from accessing any other network" rule. Further I have created an "Alexa" group I manually punch through the firewall to allow for certain ports/ip's. This means all the stuff is on a separate network and can't talk to anything...unless it is talked to from the outside first or it is an Alexa Show that I gave special access to other devices ...

So you actually spent about $1500 on your home network and $6500 on your video surveillance system.

Although i use UDM-PRO Personally due to latest changes in UNIFI Cloud Key i'd not recommend it anymore due to remove multi-site ability.

Remove MultiSite? I'm planning to use it at another site shortly...?

@@johnsfilmsllc On the cloud keys, which have a low upper limit of devices they support, they disabled multisite on new installs. Dream machines and self hosted remain the same and haven't been disabled. Ubiquiti hasn't said anything, but the working theory is that they have a lot of people trying support a bunch of sites with way more than supported devices on the cheapest, lowest powered controller possible. There's a lot of 'sky is falling' reactions going on. ubiqtuiti has been poor at communication, but kids on youtube spewing rumors and falsehoods is a problem. if you listen to youtube comments then if your internet goes down, all your devices are bricked and will never be usable again. :-/

Hah - let's hope that doesn't happen :) I've found Ubiquiti to lack a bit in the communication department per many online posts I've seen. The recent hack didn't look great for them but at least they owned up to it.

This issue/problem has been corrected/fixed in the ßeta release of the new UniFi Network Controller 6.0.45. So it should be pushed out to the various devices including UniFi Cloud Key and UniFi Cloud Key Plus in the next firmware rollout.

The official release of version 6.0.45 of the controller has now been posted. So the next rollout of firmware should fix/update the CK/CK pro .
