Based on fWAR entirely, Monty is the 15th most valuable pitcher in baseball this year, Mikolas the 19th. Nola is 20, Snell 22. I would never have guessed that order.
How many starting pitchers should the Cardinals get in free agency? I want the front office to get 4. Two of them as top of the rotation guys like Stroman, Snell, Urias, etc. on deals with some length, and two of them on 1 year deals like Flaherty, Lynn, Morton etc. That gives you a full rotation without tapping into your prospects, and sends the message to Liberatore and the AAA crew that they'll have to really pitch well and force their way into the rotation. Honorable mention: Shohei Ohtani. The Cardinals should pursue him, but I have zero faith that they'd seriously participate in the bidding war for him.
I was in Chicago this past weekend for the series. Spoke to a lot of cubs fans who did not understand the hate the cardinals had for Contreras. They admitted they didn’t like him as a catcher but they never thought of him as terrible. It’s horrible how the cardinals have treated him. In terms of signees. The only pitcher over the age of 36 I’m interested in is Lynn because a change of scenery would likely help. But the cardinals need to learn their past lessons and stop signing guys at the edge of 40. Therefore I do not want to see Scherzer. So many better options than what Scherzer will cost you for the price he will demand.
I'm a Cubs fan. Cardinals fans have shown just how despicable they are this season. One losing season and you guys are no better than Philly or NYC fans

But I would like to see Flaherty and Marmol go. And no, I don't always expect a playoff or World Series year, but the season now, is pathetic, very forgetable.
I don't really understand it for the reason you said - if the Cardinals are willing to trade him it's a red flag for anyone who might want him. If he's truly that big of an issue then I guess trade him to whoever will buy him, but Herrera in total hasn't impressed and Knizner has proven he can't hit much.
Max is due to make 43.3M next year so why would he opt-out and take a discount with the Cardinals? Stroman is making 25M and wouldn't be looking to fell so that is nearly 70M in two guys.
I don't totally agree with the pitchers blaming him for the pitch selection. Bob Gibson and Tim McCarver, would be the first to tell you it's the pitcher that calls the game, not the catcher. Maybe that's why St Louis is in the sewer this year? I never thought the Cardinals didn't have the talent, but their missing so many intangibles that add up. Teamwork, leadership, personally, I'd be keeping Montgomery, Flaherty would be on his way to California.
Yankees need offense and their catcher is hurt. Could we package him with more offense like De Jong and Carlson even Flaherty for Clarke Schmidt and maybe Severino.
I’ll say it again this year without Yadi and signing Contreras who was obviously overpaid but I still like him he never was going to be Yadi but what this did was expose Mo and FO plus coach iPad and staff… for years Yadi covered up Mo and FO’s failures of evaluating and putting together rotations… imagine how good cards would of been if Yadi had Scherzer Degrom Kershaw Rodon type talent with Wainwright… ITS MO AND CREW NOT WILLIE C!
No way they sign guys like Nola or or Snell. Cards are cheap, they have been for years. They'll sign someone who's a #3 or #4 and hope they pitch better but they won't. Cardinals don't have the coaching staff to make players better any more

Trading him for what!!!??? He is not the problem!! Pitching is the "MAIN" problem amongst other things.....like bad baserunning, defense, inconsistent offense, bad managerial decisions.....A DELUSIONAL GM, etc!!!!!
The Contraras situation is probably the most embarrassing managerial treatment of a player in the recent history of the Cardinals. It was evidence of a broken management. Yea, Mo, I am speaking to you again!

This Contreras' debacle is a byproduct of consistent systemic-failure issues from the top down. I say ship Mo, A-Ball Oli and Blake and keep Contreras! Why do I always have an impending and ominious feeling the FO will find a way to F this up and once again suck in 24'. Mo's failed analytical BS, mid-pack in payroll, and the underwhelming leadership in the dugout is reflective of the new Cardinal Way. If they didn't want to pay Rodon $160M, theyre likely not getting any top FA's. After all this dysfunctional crap, they may not even want to sign here. The deadline and offseason will be quite interesting to see if they can get the franchise off the damm sandbar.
Trade Contreras. Get a new of the young Giants catchers, maybe Joey Bart...save a lot of money. Then have Yadi work with him to school him. Use the money saved on Contreras to get a couple of pitchers.
Just send Flaherty or Montgomery and maybe one or two of our log-jammed Outfielders to San Diego for Snell already. Or NYM for Kodai Senga. Or the Twins for one of their starters. Just make sure to get a guy who can actually get some punch-outs!
Wilson’s struggles is 100% on the cardinals coaching staff. They should have brought in Yadi for spring training and a consultant for the year to work with Wilson.
From what contreras has said on live tv him and yadi text eachother occasionally. Contreras is a bat, nothing more. Not being able to capitalize on Sean Murphy sent this team into a downhill spiral. I was hoping Waino would teach Contreras but we all see Waino is only wise. Who ever is high up should realize the players have much more impact on the team than their coaches. Yadi was the coach and the playmaker. You cannot replace that. You cannot get that again. This organization has much more than just player issues. They need leadership, not a name to blame it on. This team looks more totalitarian as they keep the same bloodline in. Yadi Coach Waino Pitching Coach Bench Coach can be anyone else really. So thats the uptopian team leadership settled. I believe Moe is a good GM. But the trouble ensues further up the ladder
No way they trade him because they’d have to eat some of his contract and if the cardinals aren’t willing to move on from Matz over 22 million they’re not gonna pay another team for Contreras to play against us
In hindsight, seeing a little more of Herrera this year & possibly realizing now that Contreras was not what they thought he would be, I'm betting the FO is wishing they had stuck with Herrera & that none of this would have happened. Atlanta's FO made the offseason deal acquiring Sean Murphy.
Their untouchables need to be Goldy, Arenado, Gorman, Walker, and Contreras, they arent gonna pay Contreras to have him on another team and they need to have some patience with Yadi no longer here to hold things together.
