I had mine for a couple weeks now, I think it made me faster because the shifting is so fast, plus you can program the shifter to triple shift if you hold down the button
Mike Hall used electronic Di2 when he broke the self supported 2,745 mile Tour Divide course record in 2016. I'm sure AXS will work for plenty of bikepackers. I'm excited about electronic bar end shifters for aero bars while bikepacking. A lot less complicated than Di2.
I got one as soon it came to the public, because I’m a mechanic and saw the advantages of having it, me being a hater of electric stuff on bikes........but this axs group is way better than anything i had ever have EVER😎is perfect.!!!!
I have AXS XX1 and absolutely love it. The shifting is perfect, every time, load or not. Battery was the worry for me, but as mentioned in the review, I found its a non-issue. At first I was constantly checking the battery, but the charge really does last a long time (3-4 weeks riding everyday), depending on how much shifting is done. I have a spare battery but seriously doubt I will ever need it. I also have cabled Sram XX1 Eagle on another bike... cheaper, but there is also the eventual tension problems that present during a ride, and this will not happen with AXS.
Throughout the video you had me convinced, I was going to buy one....untill I heard the price 😆 I changed my mind very fast. It sounds like a great product though, thank you!
I haven't completely watched the whole video yet. I have several bikes and ride often but with the number I have it wouldn't be worth it since I ride one for a few days or weeks then go to the next. Plus I buy/collect so I'm just going to 105 especially since I've been reading bad reviews and service horror stories.
YES!! Also, making a fundamental system of your bicycle require batteries to operate is utterly sacrilegious IMO. I hate the idea of it. I've worked on them, ridden them and I hate all electronic shifting systems. So unnecessary and so much horrible electronic waste... bicycles are supposed to be eco-friendly. These systems will not last nearly as long as mechanical ones. Also, I cannot remember the last time I "accidentally shifted too far." I have never had an issue with my mechanical groups besides big crashes that would affect ANY derailleur.
Great review. If anyone is wondering, you don't need full SRAM gear either. I'm using the AXS derailleur with a Sunrace 12sp cassette, Shimano cranks and 12sp chain, and Wolf Tooth chainring. It's a Frankenstein but it works perfectly. Best and smoothest shifting I've ever had.
I think axs is a very cool concept and I definitely see it as the future of mtb drivetrains. Although the price is high right now, in 2-3 years I doubt it will be so. The only improvement I could se happening here is a definitive way to know if your battery is low. You mentioned an app from sram in the video that helps tune the derailleur, I think a simple notification on your phone to charge the ax’s battery would be a helpful improvement.
tbh the idea of a wireless post dropper and derailer while not having a single mechanical cable on a bike sounds pretty appealing for clean setup. wish they came with an extra battery for the price though
I've opted for the Axs gx upgrade kit replacing a Shimano xt 11speed set up, used an nx cassette and an xx1 chain, I've been running it for a few weeks now and it's been perfect, I've had impacts on it with no issues, really clever interaction between my Garmin 830 too, super easy to set up and battery life seams good, love a less cluttered cockpit, haters gonna hate, but I love it!
I've had thumb pain from a past injury come up only by one thing - shifting my bike. Slamming the downshift button a few times before climbs adds up and aggravates my thumb joint. I just bought an AXS because it seems like the controller is like clicking a mouse compared to using a shifter, plus it seems to be the best / least annoying derailleur on the market.

Thanks for this video. You actually answered my biggest question. Which was compatibility with GX Drivetrains. I was originally under the impression that I had to the change the chain at a minimum to make it work. Something to consider if/when I kill my current derailleur.
Thanks Jason! Glad I could help! Definitely keep it in mind for when Mr.Derailleur dies and shoot us an email / phone call or order from our website. We'd love to help you out with anything you ever need!
I agree with the phone comments! Can we send you an Otter Box? That phone was like Jason jumping out from behind a door or Freddy Kruger sneaking up behind me! :-0
It works flawlesslly so if you've got the extra money so it doesn't hurt your pocket just go for it! But honestly it's just not worth killing your budget just to get rid of cables cause it changes gear just like any other top of the line cabled groupset.
A friend of mine has it and I actually got to play with it. Very nice staff No Doubt. I have Eagle xo1 groupset on my bike and I'm happy with it. I can't see going out and spending $1,000 to replace it. I literally have 5 miles on my groupset and the resale value of the derailleur shifter and cable wouldn't get me anywhere near $1,000 for the ASX upgrade. Maybe if / when the prices come down I'll get on board.
I like the idea of the upgrade kit. All I need to do is stash away $100 a month and by next season I’ll be wireless! Plus when you go to sell your bike you just swap out the axis derailer and “controller” with the old derailer / shifter and you get to keep the wireless setup. Not a bad system I’d say!
I’ve been running shimano XTR for a few years and most people didn’t know such a thing existed. It works wonderfully and perfectly every time. Plus the battery lasts for 6 months.
I own AXS and XTR. AXS is just a bandaid until sram finds out how to shift under load. It's the same sram crunch shifting. I have also had a few ghost shifts with axs where it tries to shift but it jumps back so fast you only hear it not feel it.
The smooth shifting of the new Shimano stuff is beacuse of tbe chain and cassette, which didn't change with AXS. I'm guessing sram will release a new drivetrain (12 or 13 speed, who knows) in a year that will match or surpass the shifting performance of Shimano. The eagle drivetrain was released in 2016 and hasn't changed since.
Kazak Thranduil you could just use a Shimano 12spd Cassette and chain with your Sram AXS derailleur to have the best of both worlds. #ThinkOutsideTheBox 😉
@@Esteb858 some people on pinkbike have done it and they reported really good results. Once my GX wears out, I might give the XT or SLX cassette and chain a shot.
@@Esteb858 part of the xtr advantage is the instant release shifting and it works best under a loaded condition, it kind of works all together as a group
@@Montblanc1986 I have Sram AXS with the Shimano XTR 12spd cassette and chain. The shifts are butter smooth even under load. Not sure what you're going on about but the Shimano advantage for shifting under load has everything to do with the cassette and chain interface and not the "instant release" of the shifting. You want to tell me Shimano mechanical is faster than Sram AXS electronic shifting? As soon as the button is pushed the derailleur is shifting, there is no need to "release" the button before action occurs. I have no loyalty towards one brand or another, I use what works best which is why I mixed Sram and Shimano components.
Not for me, I have too many batteries as it is. I do like the rear der brake away feature though. I have had 2 issues this past year with hangers being bent.
Would be super cool if SRAM made a single Bluetooth control for both the dropper post and shifts, just add a single button for the post. 1 Less battery, less weight, 1 less thing in the cockpit.
At first I was like, nope..not me. Then I rode one with an AXS and I’m sold. I also like the oil slick color and the clutter free cockpit. & I am not a dentist. I’m a PI 🕵️♂️
The controller took awhile getting used to and the derailleur being so quiet took a little getting used to but now I understand what you mean after riding for a couple months
Dude! I freaking love your energy, thanks for keeping it real, I think the price is fair enough for such a genius product! I've Sram eagle GX on my Remedy and I'm interested in the upgrade kit for $1000 as it's within my budget. Great video , keep up the good work 👍👍

Crazy question but definitely a possibility this winter. Any issues running in the cold or winter months as mentioned in comments has been tested in rain and unit is sealed very well but not in ice or snow. Surprisingly enough there's some crazy Canadians like my self that would run this all year round
Thank you!! 😂I was looking for this comment before posting. Hangers bend because the rigid part that mounts to the hanger hit something - whether it's electronic or not.
I want this... But first - new dropper post, then adjusting everything to make bike for ergonomically better, then, another chain, then when group set wears out... I'm totally getting wireless!
I wouldn't have said yes based on price, but I'm getting old and have arthritis in my hand. My thumb doesn't hurt from shifting after an all day ride anymore.
I may look to go back to wire after the chain snapped twice on the S works. the system puts a lot of strain on the chain because the derailleur can switch many gears in one go. This normally happens when the derailleur fail to respond when you want it giving the impression it didn’t receive the switch signal so you end up pressing the button multiple times and suddenly find yourself jumping many gears. The command also lacks feel as it snaps into the next gear. They need to update the software to stop it from multiple shifts in one go. The system is relatively new, I’m sure improvements can be made.
I'm about to make the plunge. Not because I'm crazy about the SRAM Eagle AXS but because I got a great deal on a barely used Specialized HT that is loaded with this group set. I figure, what the hell, i am getting such a good price it's almost like getting axs for no more than a mechanical group set. If i don't like it I will just put it on my son's bike lol
I have ordered / asked for an all gold XX1 AXS to be built in gold, for my new Fezzari La Sal Peak. I didn’t know that could even be a possibility of the just the up grade kit, with the xx1 gold. till I came across your video. Most excellent!!!!! What are your thoughts on my Bling out request??
Its gonna be interesting when you ride with a group using AXS. Can a random controller end up switching your gears. I guess we'll find out as this system becomes more popular.
Great for pros who don't have to work weeks of overtime to pay for it. Great for ebikes that already have batteries but its just something else to charge and adding complexity to a bike and as you said you can forget to charge or grab bike without battery, be easy to do if in a hurry, wont happen with cable. If they can bring it to XT/GX level then it might have a place but most people aren't going to spend the mega bucks when many better upgrades, like suspension and brakes.
wonder how long it takes for this to trickle down. Obviously price is going to keep it in the realm of 10,000+ dollar bikes for now, but the features seem good enough to justify some eventual trickle down. Kinda like how full suspension, dropper posts, disc brakes, and 1x drivetrains are now in the realm of reasonably priced trail bikes now.
To anyone watching and riding in 2020 this drivetrain will be remembered for a long time. In 25 years it will be praised on GMBN Tech. Buy it so you can say you owned that when it was still relevant!
In 25 years none of these drivetrains (from 2020) will be working anymore. Unlike all the mechanical derailleurs and shifters from the same year... besides the SX garbage
At least you don't have to worry about dirt in your gear cable hose. In winter if you are riding for longer, gear cable will get a bit shorter and will have a small impact on gear changes. Can't wait when these get cheaper. 1x12 costed an arm and a leg before, now they are decent priced.
Yep, I forgot my battery on the charger the day of a race. 2hrs away. I needed to beg my husband for him to drive my battery there and back home to our kids😬
Honestly I am excited for derailleurs to just be gone for good. It seems like the last piece of mountain bikes that needs to disappear completely. If we had enough people on board with gear boxes at the bottom bracket area and put more effort into perfecting that, we could have amazingly smooth, seamless shifting and nothing poking out of our wheels to catch on crap. I'm all for the gearbox future!
I agree with this! Gearboxes are cool and all, but its been an argument for so long with very little advancements to make them better that I don't it's worth the breath anymore.
Aren’t gear boxes just too heavy? I hear bike packers love them because they are sealed units impervious to rain, etc. and require hardly any maintenance.
@@TheFullKanani it's my opinion (and hope) that with enough R&D we can get them within spec of our current set-ups. But nobody wants to throw money or time at it (can't blame them). I believe gear boxes could be the ultimate upgrade for the MTB world, we just need to support it. But since I seem to be the only one who thinks strapping a very expensive, fragile, clunky appendage on your rear wheel to dangle inches above the ground is a bad idea, I'll just dream.
I would get an gx cable actuated over the sx axs any day..I had an sx rear mech and the spring tensioner is garbage..got my gx and is super quiet and stiff..
I want it so bad but it is hard to obtain at that price point if the upgrade kit was even just like 700 I would probably save up and get it but $1000 it’s pretty steep
