Great vid thanks Rob. Just been looking at this kit, so nice to see it all laid out like this. I'd be an XO type of guy as would want all black on the build
Would love to see an 11 or even 10 speed version of the beefier transmission design for e-bikes. 12 speed seems like a waste and the chains break easier... but that derailleur looks strong!
This is really good to know. I have been away from the biking scene for the last 7 years, but I am currently researching bike companies for my next enduro bike, and piecing together parts I would like to have on the bike. I have noticed that there are so many new components, so many different component names, and finding this transmission thing has been all new to me, and to be honest, a little bit confusing. But I know the SRAM transmission is something I would like to have, as I see my new bike as something I don't really want to upgrade for the life of the bike, unless I have to. The price difference between the GX and the XX transmission from SRAM is pretty significant, so its really good to know that the GX system performs just as good as the XX version. My enduro bike will be ridden 95% downhill, so weight in grams does not matter to me.
Don't buy that crap. It's not worth it especially if you go 95% dh.if it has to be electric, go for the old gx. Otherwise a normal gx or even an nx system is fine and if you fuck it up, its 60-90€ for a derailleur vs 100 for a chain alone on the transmission systems
Great video Rob, really helped me understand the new sram group sets. I’m still running mechanical shimano but very interested in upgrading to SRAMs new system and the GX would be the one I go for. Should I save my money or use it for another upgrade, maybe suspension.
Great heads up on the weights, etc! I have Park Tools scales for components and complete bikes and I weigh EVERYTHING! Light tyres & wheels are tops for me. I don't have an emtb these days (now a much lighter mtb) but did weigh everything trying to get my 2018 Vitus E-Sommet as light as I could afford. 21kg was the 'lightest' 🤣
Works for me , I’d go for the cheapest gx model even if I had £1800 to spend , as I not a fan of the silver on the pricier versions , Rob does the new drive trains really out perform the old axs which I have atm
I'm using almost anything as cheap as possible, but went for XO chain, because in my case - it really lasts twice as long as other counterparts. Maybe it's because I don't really clean or lube the chain as often as I should and I ride in winters as well.... but, this is how it works in my case.
@@hannes6114 XO shown in tests to last longer than any other SRAM 12-sp chain. i cannot believe the difference when compared to using GX-level (whatever they are call) chains - probably 3X or more longer on my bike (riding in a variety of conditions but mostly dry).
I do like the way Sram located the battery in the GX it gives me a better sense of my battery not falling off, and it makes the system look more compact. I do have the old GX AXS in one bike and the new GX transmission in my E-bike and honestly both systems work just fine!!
I got to use gearboxes even electric gearboxes with electronic shifting that's the future you show just antique Technik cheers from Bali I cycle since 1970 daily
I follow the law of diminishing returns, if you've no budget, go for the best, but dont be fooled into thinking the ratio of cost to improvement is linear
The clutch on the old GX AXS was horrible and caused a lot of chain slap, assuming there is no difference in the clutch compared to the XX and XO this definitely seems like the better option. The hardest test is seeing what they are like long term. SRAM talks about the durability of these new drivetrains, time will only tell i guess.
But it wasn't so much the clutch (yes it's a bit weak), its the fact that the whole DR flops around as there is no cable housing anymore to hold it in place.
Hey Rob, great video! Another question: in the last picture you can see a cable connected to the GX rear derailleur. Is the rear derailleur already available for e-bikes without a battery? Thanks
Awesome job on the deep dive video Rob thx!!! It looks just like the original axs line up value wise gx for the win.I have the non udh gx axs on my xt drive train(sramano) and love it,I am curious to see if the new gx tt would work as well as the non udh on a shimano drive train?ps Rob did you manage to get the 54tooth dt ratchet for your hub yet?
so my understanding is that you use a sram derailleur on a shimano cassette and chain? Does that really work well without increased wear? I thought about maybe doing that because I broke one tooth on my cassette anyway and will need to replace it and the chain
@@sendyboiii7 Hi Chris.Yes it shifts excellent without any noticeable more wear.I use silca hot melt wax on all my e-mtb's.You would also need a micro spline free hub body if your running a sram cassette now.A youtuber I know has an excellent video on the sramano setup check it out his channel is lovemtb. If you do the switch use an xtr chain they have the best longevity out of the shamano 12 speed chains.Cheers!!!
The price difference between the non ebike groupsets is even worse. I mean 1180 for AXS GX T-Type vs 1700 for the AXS X0 T-Type. Today on ebay I spotted 1 discounted AXS X0 for 1400 delivered, BUT that is still £220 more for zero performance and very little weight saving. I also much prefer the newer GX AXS hidden/more protected battery design. ONLY thing I like more with the X0 is the cranks with the cut out section in them.
If you want to play devil's advocate, you could have identical parts with different heat treating and coating methods, even if you threw out the possibility that it's the same molds and designs but different alloy type all together.
My Odyssey bmx hollow pin chain has a hex key master pin and I love how quick and simple it is. Is that something the transmission chain has or is it a regular master? Random question, I know lol
I had same thoughts 2 months ago when I ordered custom DH bike - I put GX (DH version) on it, price jump to X0 was too much compared to performance/weight
Nice video!!! two questions....i have a YT Capra CF Comp 2015 bike, is it compatible with the new GX. What is this nice black surface on your desk? Thank you!
Nice review! I'm not sure how accurate this is but I've heard beyond weight saving (specifically for chains), sram's hollow pin chains are significantly more wear resistance than their lower tier chains (Other than the chain it really seems like a no brainier and go for GX)
Apart from the weight difference between GX and XO, what materials are used in each of the cassettes? If different materials are used, what is the wear and tear?
I saw it on a Chinese factory for $498, so that's about $700 profit each time they get someone to buy it. Also, if ur weight conscious consider going on a run.
well.... good luck, ONLY BIGGER AND MORE EXPENSIVE.... easy to destroy, so good for Sram, coz you need a new one soon.... I'll stay with Shimano Linkglide on my eMTB (currently I use 11-46s, M8000 XT drivetrain - proper MTB rear mech. almost completely flush with a frame, hard to destroy, durable, cheap.)
How about the remotes that comes with the drivetrains. It looks like there is a difference there. Any observations on those in regards to qulity and feel ? Asking because i just received my Canyon Spectral:ON CF 9 yesterday with the GX version on it.
Actually, the GX cassette will wear out very quickly on an e-bike. This should be pointed out that the real problem with the GX will be the cassette, so piece out the setup if you’re really pinching pennies, or go to the X0 for the premium cassette. 👍🏼
@@dft1Yes, for the Standard AXS group set all of the components are interchangeable/compatible across the lineup. Not the new SRAM Transmission AXS group set however, completely different and incompatible unfortunately.
So going from a shimano deore derailleur with a chain and cassette that don’t match on my trek fuel exe this wireless GX drive train should feel incredible?
man I just don't understand what's the difference between axs and transmission. Is it that transmission is made for shifting under load and axs not so much?
hello I have a focus jam2 6.8 2022 and I would like to switch to a coil shok but I can't find any recommendation to know which can fit if you have an idea Sorry to ask you this, but I don't know where to find this information. THANKS
@RobRidesEMTB oh.. right. There is the ebike version also. I guess at least the normal version crank is very different than the GX crank. Looms like the GX crank is now the same for ebike and non ebikes.
@@leedove7255 well in video’s on the higher end brands it shows a stick being placed in the jockey wheels and it still has ability to keep turning because of the design. So seems like a good feature to have whilst out in the woods. Where you have chances of getting stuff caught in there.
