Is Your Bass Boat Actually Covered? Insurance Issues You Need To Know Before Its Too Late!

No one likes talking about insurance but are you sure you're covered during a tournament? Does being on a "pro staff" put your tow vehicle in jeopardy? Is all of your tackle covered if you have a major incident? These don't need to be grey areas, you deserve to know exactly when you are and are not covered. Today we're posing all the tough questions to Ben Green, a marine insurance specialist, so that we can all be more prepared in case we're involved in a crash.
Just a few days after Matt's accident the insurance issues were beginning to unfold and Matt vowed that when it was over he would do a video to help the entire TacticalBassin family better understand potential issues and how to avoid them. He is by no means an insurance expert but he learned some tough lessons and doesn't want you to experience the same. When we found out Ben Green was in town (an actual expert on the subject) for a big tournament on Clearlake, we knew we had to track him down and get real answers to educate the Tactical Family.
Ben was kind enough to take part of his pre-fishing day to answer our questions. This video isn't about getting you a new insurance guy (though we are including his information below because we trust him and appreciate that he took the time to do this for all of us) its about making sure you know the exact questions to ask your insurance agent. Too many anglers have "grey areas" in their policy and that shouldn't be the case. Take the time to watch this video to the end, understand the questions, and get yourself coverage that is going to keep you and your loved ones safe.
Matt thought he had all the coverage he needed, in fact he was confident that he'd "over-insured" himself, but there were still gaps and a lot of issues developed as a result. Don't wait until it happens to you to find out where the gaps might be. Take a few minutes out of your day and ask your agent the right questions. If you're not comfortable with the answers, there are only 3 (to my knowledge) marine specialists in the country. If you'd like to reach out to Ben we're including the link to his website and facebook page below.

Me and Ben are friends on FB. Actually met on a Ranger owners page when I posted on having my tackle stolen out of my boat that was parked at my house. My insurance company was trying not to pay and I made a post warning the other guys what they were doing. Ben stepped up out of nowhere on that FB page, contacted me, and told me exactly what to say and do. Long story short, because of him they decided to pay. Saved me about 4 grand. Now that’s a standup guy!

Justin Melton I remember that. That is the SPECIFIC situation when you and I worked together and got that carrier to pay the claim. We didn’t know each other and I wasn’t your agent. I saw you had an open loop and contacted you. I was so jacked that it worked. That was one of the times it did. Thanks Justin!

It is a difficult conversation on price but people will understand. Thanks for making all the insurance agents/fisherman’s life easier!

Good Video, I own an insurance agency in Virginia for 20 years. Think the moral of the story is spend time discussing coverages with your agent or company...sometimes for as little as like $30 a year or $3 a month, will cover the lower unit or tackle....also ask to add medical payments to the policy, this will help with the injuries for you on your boat. also helps fill in deductible cost with health insurance as well.

Great agent and video. I am a marine and hull liability claim adjuster with 25 years experience including surveying credentials. I work and have worked for some of the largest marine insurers in the US and London markets. In my career I have adjusted everything from small craft and yachts to commercial tugs, barges, crew boats, stevedores and commercial fishing vessels. Most of my time now is spent on litigated commercial admiralty liability matters. The agent relationship is important if you do not understand insurance. In my opinion if a person has assets, high liability policy limits and uninsured motorist coverage on autos, home and boat are the most important aspects of insurance coverage to protect yourself in the event of a large liability loss. Stuff happens out there and if you are involved in a serious loss attorneys get involved and law suits follow. Having an umbrella policy over auto, home, business and boats is important if you have assets. Insuring your hull and tackle is important too but big picture being protected for liability loses is especially important. I currently own a bass boat and am surprised how much insurance coverage I have for a reasonable premium. Hopefully I never have a claim, but if I do I am protected. Also, regarding claims, having a seasoned agent who has relationships with insurance carriers he or she represents is also important. The agent can be a good claim advocate for the customer in the event of a loss and possible disagreement over coverage or claim settlement. I love watching this fisherman's videos and am happy to see that he has a good agent..

Everyone should get there policy out of whatever storage box its in and review it and make sure you have proper coverage. Sometimes your towing vehicle insurance covers things also plus you need your tackle etc on your homeowners policy if you keep it at home so its covered in fire or theft situations. **MATT I can see a huge need for a second video going deeper into these other issues and offering company names that cover blown motors bc most dont. As an Inurance agent in Missouri, I wish people would create videos like this one for everything, home, auto, boat, RV, flood, etc.... Having third party and first hand experience testimony on the fallout of a bad situation is exactly what people need to hear. Day in and day out we try to preach to people exactly what you are telling people in this video, but at the end of the day, we are just the insurance sales guy. Insurance is more than an ID card, and if written properly can save some real heartache when the need arises. The cost difference between being insured properly and just buying a piece of paper can be nominal too.

Great job on a topic not often talked about. Insurance is tricky and you need to make sure your agent knows what you need covered. An annual meeting with your agent will help shed light on what you have covered under what circumstances. Like Matt, my brother learned the hard way when he was involved in an accident with his travel trailer. You have to know what you have!

Great info! I'm an insurance agency owner in Michigan and so thankful you guys are educating people on this. Ben Green knows what he's talking about. A few things to hammer home what he said.. An insurance policy is a legal document and it's taken very literal, if it's not there you don't get it. You can't assume anything. You should have an understanding of everything on your policies and don't assume that your agent knows your personal situation, insurance isn't one size fits all.

Good video. You mentioned your company would not cover named line items on your policy, I think all US states have insurance commissioners that are suppose to fight for the consumer in that state. It doesn't mean that they will fight for you, some are good and some aren't. But if you have a obvious item being denied call your commissioner and make a complaint. The commissioners have lots of power over the Ins companies that do business in your state. However it depends on the politics of that state and the Man or Woman commissioner's alliances that influence the tenacity of that commissioner. You should really know your own state commissioners allegiance. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I've been in the insurance industry for years. Rule #1. The insurance company and agent are NOT on your side. Regardless of what they say. The insurance company makes money by taking in more money than they pay out (and investing that money). The Agents get commission (the higher the premium and more business they can sell you, the higher the commission). Claims will not volunteer coverage on your policy during the time of a loss (claim). Unfortunately, you need to understand your coverages and how they work. I have had to make claims in the past and just about every time I've had to fight/argue/educate claims reps to get covered or full value covered by the policy. Fortunately, I understand the business, but the general public does not and they get taken advantage of. The moment of truth for any insurance company comes at the time of a claim. Long story short, educate yourself on what coverages you need. Not what someone sells you. This is informative and I'm sure will be eye opening for some.
@bengreeninsuranceagency
@bengreeninsuranceagency 5 лет назад
It is frustrating to say the least. Sometimes you point it out and they say “Oh, let me check into that”. Then the responsible agent / broker follows up and then there is more wait. It’s a big game and unless we take care of our policyholders no one is voluntarily managing the claim. Blows my mind.

Matt that was one of the most important as well as informative video's put together for bass fisherman. Awesome, Awesome job. Thank you so much for that. I had my first claim in 20 years. Fortunately I was covered on all my loss. Actuslly walked away with $350.00 in my pocket because I was prepared, but so many people are not and they need to know the in's and out's of insurance. Hats of to you and this broker for putting this video togother. Keep up the awesome work covering all aspects of angling. P.S. I fist Tennessee River impoundments. Wondering if you can do a video explaining ledge fishing in power generation reservoir and how to position the boat on the structure verses the current and casting locations. Do you focus more on the ledge current is flowing over (Up current side of intersecting creek mouth)and pulling lures off ledge into deep water or the ledge that current is hitting the face (Down current side of intersecting creek mouth) throwing into deeper water and bringing baits up the ledge. Which tends to be more productive to you? Thanks again, looking forward to a future video on this topic. Tight Lines!!!

I had my fishing equipment stolen once. I left all of my latches unlocked thank goodness because I couldn't imagine the damage i would have been looking at if they would have broken into the compartments. For the first time ever I took all of my rods in the house that night, usually I leave them in the locker, They did get my tackle and after a full year I still haven been able to afford to replace half of it yet but I have become more picky about buying what actually catches bass rather then wanting to have every color of crankbait , spinnerbait and plastics LOL. Now I keep everything in larger totes and take it in the house. takes a few trips but its worth it.

You are awesome Mike! I was sitting there thinking, Am I really with Matt on Clearlake in a Tactical Video? Then Tim was at the weigh-ins. It was an incredible experience!

I had to check the 80mph box! I think that’s why my Bullets boat insurance is a lot more than my 150hp Ranger!
