Discovered some malware on my computer recently that I'm having a hard time getting rid of. Some guy in his underwear wants me to visit some merch store.........oh, nevermind

Fun fact: Most of the laptops/ultrabooks have no camera light at all.

So I checked the default folder for recordings that Linus mentioned and there was a video of him dancing in LTT underwear.

My phone's front camera can't physically spy on me. I'd notice since it's a motorized front camera. I'd say that's a very real pro of such mechanism.

Currently wondering how laptop manufacturers haven't figured out how to build a sliding shield on webcams yet, as well as build wire-level disconnect switches for mics.

Edward Snowden uses a sticky tape for his webcam, so I do.

This is why i was surprised when i got my Alexa echo 8. Something as simple as a physical tab that slides over to cover the camera. and it even controls if the camera is on or off. Such a simple yet secure invention that i have yet to see on laptops. That just leaves the mic to worry about.

I got an e-mail in my spam folder once from someone claiming they hacked my browser, got my password, and recorded me on my webcam "pleasuring myself." Problem is, the password he had was a throw away password I used for one time access to websites that require signup to view articles and my computer doesn't have any form of web cam on it whatsoever. Was good for a chuckle.

My high ass started looking for the camera roll folder without realising I never even connected webcam to my desktop.

If you dont want to cover your webcam with tape or some janky solution like that, simply disabling it in device manager should do the trick too. Do keep in mind that while malware now doesn't generally check to see if the camera is disabled doesn't mean it wont start checking in the future.

Finally. A legit reason to use just old enough tech that doesn't come with a camera or microphone built into the display or somewhere near the keyboard.

As stated in some comments, what I’ve always thought is, in the off chance that your webcam is interesting enough for them to target, then you’ve got bigger things to worry about. Microphone, passwords, bank stuff, etc.

I regularly use my school computer (Since in it there is no Admin protection and stuff with the parental account, which the password is easy to find) and knowing how crazy school is and how many reports there are scare me.

You can't spy on me through my webcam if the linux drivers are not working

I've known for a while that the activity LED on Apple webcams is always lit if the camera is accessed. (Hard-wired, not software-driven). Really surprised other manufacturers didn't follow through, it's such a dead simple light. If there is an indicator light, why not hard-wire it? What brands do and don't?

When I see someone with a tape over their laptop camera I instantly think "hah this person must think they're absurdly important to think people would care to spy on them"

Windows 10 also shows an icon in the lower right corner (by the sound, network etc. icons) when your webcam is active, and also one when your microphone is active.

If my phone camera was spyed I won't bother because my Wi-Fi is so slow that they would get a second of video after some hours

In my school, if you don't have your webcam taped... you're weird.

I don't know about webcams but in windows 7 a few years ago I had the proof the webcam mic was always listening, I was recording a vinyl with audacity and when checking cutting the track later I realized you could hear the tv in the background, problem is mic/webcam inputs were both disabled in windows (greyed out in sound control panel)

i simply looked in the settings to see the last used section on my webcam. it said it was last used yesterday at a time where i was in a meeting which would be normal, but i NEVER turn on my camera during meetings
